of which the following is a specification.

Fig. 1 designates a mechanical movement embodying my invention. In order to illustrate my mechanical movement performing an automatically operating intermittent reciprocal function, and atthe same time arranged to move twomembers toward to illustrate it operatively connected to two operating chuck heads which are used to performa blank Wrapping turning-in function in a boX wrappingmachine, although my invention contemplates broadly the application of my =mechanical movement to any machine or to any operative mechanism "of'any kind or character requiring lateral reciprocal stroke movement in conjunction with a variable distance movement between the operative function performing mechanism.
The application of my invention to the side turn-inmechanism of a box wrapping machine such as is illustrated in the pending application Serial Number 8447 filed May 25, 1915, involves all of the principles of my invention in such a clear and comprehensive manner that they can be readily understood. In the drawing, the numeral 1 designates a flat smooth top table, which is preferably -provided with'two side frames 2 and 3, which are secured to a lease plate 4, along which a shaft 5 is rotatably mounted in suitable bearings 6, which shaft is rotated by any suitable power transmitting belt or gearing mechanism which is connected to it but which I do not illustrate. Upon this shaft I mounta cam disk 7, which cam disk engages a roller 8 on one arm 90f a double crank lever'thatis supported in a bracket 10 that is bolted'to the bed plate of the machine.
The other arm-11 connects with the lower 1 end of a connecting rod**12, the upper end of which 'is pivotally attached'to a lever 13 which is mounted on the adjacent end ofv a :squareshaft 14. This square shaft is rotatablymounted in ahorizontalposition parallel to thetop flat surface of the table and at right angles to the length of thetable.
The bearings in which the square shaft is mounted will be presently described.
To the top of the table on opposite sides of its longitudinal center and at equal distances from it, we secure the two head blocks A and B, whichsupport the side turn-in mechanisms of a box wrapping machine. The side turn-in mechanisms of these two head blocks face each other and as they are exactly alike a description of one will suffice for both, and inasmuch as they illus trate the action of my present invention, I deem it advisable to describe them.
Each head block consists of a base portion 15 that is slidably mounted to be moved in ahorizontal plane in a transverse slideway 16 formed in the table, and a vertically movable chuck block 17 that is vertically adjustable upon upwardly projecting standards 18 that are formed on the base 15. The standards are yoke-shaped and are provided with guide ways and each chuck block is provided with a cap lugged portion 19 thatis slidably mounted in the guide way of the standard. A threaded rod 20 is rotatably mounted at its upper end in a bush ing 21 at the top of the standard and threads down through the lug 19 of the chuck block, its lower end resting in a bearing in the adjacent end of the base 15. The threaded rod is adapted to receive a wrench to turn it to raise or lower the chuck block which has a vertical movement on the standard sufficient to allow it to be adjusted to all heights or depths of boxes the machine will wrap. This chuck block extends down through a slot in the table, when adjusted for boxes of slight depth, and it is adjustably movable up and down to accommodate boxes of different depths, and is fixed in adjusted positions by its cap 22 which can be clamped tightly to the standards. The chucks face the opposite sides of the box that is to be wrapped (see Fig. 1), and the opposing side members of each chuck are each provided with a semi-circular slideway 23, and in each pair of slideways is mounted a segmental block 24, which there fore travels in a semi-circular path and is moved in this path by a combination of link and lever members, which are constructed and act as follows:
The segment block is provided with a depending bifurcated lug 25, to which one end of a link 26 is pivoted. The lower end of this link is provided with an oblong slot and is pivotally connected through this slot 4 by a pin to the upper end of a vertically reciprocable bar 27, which is slidably mounted in a guide'28 that is formed on a depending portion of the head block, which is given a vertical reciprocating movement by a mechanism which I do not illustrate.
Along the front face of each chuck I secure a bar 29, against which the upper edges of the sides of the boxes bear, when the turn-in blades bend the extended portions of the sides of the blank over against the inner faces of the sides of the box, 'as shown in Fig. 1.
One side of the depending portion 30 of the head block is provided with an opening, in which is secured an internally threaded bushing 31, in which is screwed a plug 32, having a square hole, the outer end of the plug having an annular groove 33. Through these plugs passes the square rod 14, the ends of which are rounded and enter bushings in the sides of the table. A right and left hand threaded rod 34 extends parallel with and adjacent to the square rod 1 1, and upon the end portions of the threaded rod are screwed followers, comprising hub members 35 having arms 36, the outer ends of which are bifurcated, and straddle the annularly grooved ends of the plugs 32. Thus by turning the crank handle 37 on the end of the threaded rod 3 1, the said rod is ro tated, and the head blocks are moved in ward or outward in their slideways 16. The object of threading the plugs to the bushings 31 is as follows: When the boxes pass from the first into the second stage position, the head blocks stand in such positions relatively to each other that the boxes may pass readily between the bars 29 without touching them, but after they have reached their proper position, it is necessary that their sides should be engaged by the said bars 29, and to accomplish this a slight inward movement is given to each head block, by turning the square rod by which the plugs 32 are turned, and as the plugs when turned by the square red are held against lateral movement by the followers 36, the head blocks are thereby moved in or out according to the direction of rotation of the plugs. The square rod is turned in the following manner: The cam disk 7 and its cam 7 engage the roller 8 on the member 9 of the double crank arm. The other arm 11 operates the connecting rod 12. which operates the lever 13, and the shaft 14: is thereby turned, and the desired variable reciprocal stroke can be given to the heads by providing cams with different predetermined throw movements.
The operation of thisturn-in mechanism has nothing to do with the mechanism of my present invention that moves the chuck heads toward each other automatically and grips the box between them as each box is fed between them, and then backs oif to re lease the box and to receive another one; the above chuck turn-in mechanism shows however, that my mechanism can be reliably used to operate complicated mechanism that necessarily has to work with timed precision and certainty of positive action. At the same time by applying the hand crank to the its ends in said table, followers in threaded engagement with said threaded rod and having bifurcated ends which engage the grooved ends of said plugs, and means for imparting a partial rotation to said square rod.
9. In a device of the character described, the combination with a table having oppositely arranged head blocks slidably mounted therein, of means for moving said blocks simultaneously toward or away from' each other, and means connected with head block moving means, but having an independent action therefrom, for imparting short reciprocating movements to said blocks independently of the first mentioned moving means.
10. Th combination with a support and opposite head blocks slidably mounted therein, of plugs in threaded engagement with said blocks, having square'axial apertures and annularly grooved outer ends, a square rod rotatably mounted at its ends in said support and passing through'said plugs, an arm on said square rod, a double-armed rock lever, a rod connected to the arm on said shaft and one arm of said rock lever, a roller on the other member of said rock lever, and a cam for engaging said roller thereby to rock said double armed lever, a manually operated right and left hand threaded rod extending parallel with the square rod and mounted at its ends in said support, and 01- lowers threaded to said threaded rod and having bifurcated ends which engage the grooved ends of said plugs.
