To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, J OTHAM S. Comm, of New York, in the county of New York and btate' of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvcmcntsin Sewinghiaehines; and I hereby declare the following'to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, reference being had to the annexed drawings, making part of this specification, in which 4 Figure l is a top view of the machine with my improvements attached; Fig.. .2, avertical section upon the line of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, afront M y improvemen s may be applied to any description of sewing-n1ach1ne, but I'have'rep resented them in the accompanying drawingsas attached to one recently invented by SherburneO. This involved aconsiderable consumption of time, and was accompanied by other inconveniences, all of which my present invention is designed to remove. I
My improvement consists in the use of an endless feeder and baster-plate, revolving continuously, and so constructed as to supply the cloth to the needles without the necessity at any time of stopping the machine for the purpose of attaching the goods to the feed-bar, as

To enable others skilledin the art to make and use my invention, I will proceed to defeed it to the needles.

This feeder is so fitted and applied to the flange 0 as to be held in place and prevented from moving in a lateral direction either when revolved or when at rest. The feeder D, instead of being a straight and long bar, as in other machines, is made circular and without end, and is placed in the' machine represented in the A accompanying drawings directly over the path of the needles, which are shown at a and b.

They may be of sufficient length to penetrate entirely through the material to be sewed, or but just long enough to lay hold of it and move it along without penetrating it; or theymayeven be dispensed with altogether, the
periphery of the revolving feeder being made 1 sufficiently rough to, lay hold of the cloth and It is evident, also, that tical or any other position suitedto the nature of the work to be done, and that it may also be madeof any size larger or smaller than that here represented without altering the nature of my invention, which consists, as before stated, in an endless revolving feeder having asperities upon its periphery by which the cloth is fed to the needles, as before stated.
This endless feeder may be caused to revolve by any suitable means, the choice of which will depend upon the position which it is made to occupy in the machine, and upon other attendant circumstances.
In the machine represented in the accompany ing drawings the upper edge of the feeder D is furnished with ratchet-teeth d.

' they constitute no part of my invention, need not be described, as my improvements may be applied to sewing-machines of any description. I will, however, briefly refer to some of the principal parts of the machine and point outsome of their relative positions with re-' gard to the rotary feeder and pressure-sprin K L are the two sliding bars which carry the needles a b. v

It is .evident that a cloth-feeder like that above described requires no such removal or setting back as is necessary at certain intervals when a straight bar or clamp is employed.
Consequently my improvement not .0n1y saves the room-which a long bar necessarily requires for its operation, but also the time which is lost in effecting the retraction of the bar. afterthe completion of a line of stitches. The endless rotating feed may be composed of an endiess chain or made up of a series, of hinged links; or it may be composed of an endlessbandof leather or other flexible su bstance. These variations of construction, being mere modifications, I consider to be in- Volvedin my invention.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
An endless rotary cloth-feeder, in combina tionvwith a reciprocating needle or needles,
substantially as described.
