ADDING-MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 17, 1917.
Application filed November 23, 1905. Serial No. 288,778.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. PIKE, J r.', a citizen of the United States, residing at South Orange, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adding- Machines, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to "adding machines of a character to print numbers in parallel I columns, and consists in means whereby the adding and recording means of such an apparatus are rendered inoperative except when the platen is in proper position for the printing to be effected upon one of the columns, as fully set forth hereinafter and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a side view with parts broken away, illustrating sufficient of an adding macliline to enable my invention to be understoo Fig. 2 is an enlarged sectional elevation of the end of the machine Where the recording devices are situated;
Fig; 3 is a rear elevation of Fig. 2;;
Fig. 4 is a perspective View of parts detached.
Fig. 5 is a plan of Fig. 2.
The operating parts of the apparatus are supported by themain frame A and include the series of keys 1, the adding means E, the recording means D, and stopping and starting means F, with suitable actuating devices not fully shown but which may be of any desired character, deriving their movement from a rock shaft I which is rocked from the rotation of a driving shaft J held normally at rest by the contact of the shoulder of a disk 2 with a. pivoted pawl 3, the lifting of which permits the shaft J to rotate and to rock the shaft I through the medium of a connecting rod 4.
These parts illustrate simply one means of actuating the adding and recording means and need not bemore fully described as their details constitute no feature of the present invention and as they are fully illus-' pinions 6 which are carried by a frame 7, so that the pinions may be thrown into and out of engagement with racks 8 on slides 9 connected to levers 10, the upper ends of 'which are curved and constitute the carriers for movable type 12 which may be driven toward a cylindrical platen 13 by the action of hammers 14.
' The platen 13 is supported upon the carrier B which is provided with any suitable means for retaining a strip or strips of paper in contact with the platen, and for rotating the platen step by step, as usual.
It is desirable inmany instances to print upon the strip or strips of paper parallel columns of figures side by side, and the purpose of my invention is to insure that the platen shall be brought into different predetermined columnar positions in respect to the recording means to insure the printing of. each column in proper position, and to prevent the printing at intermediate points.
To this end I combine with the carrier any suitable stop devices by means of which it can be temporarily arrested in anyone of the predetermined positions required for printing a column, but which may be adjusted to enable the carrier to be moved from one position to another, with intermediate devices of a character to control the operating means of the apparatus so that it will not'be practicable to operate the adding andrecording devices except when the platen is in one of its predetermined printing positions. v
While different appliances may be employed in carrying out my invention, I have shown a frame G having trunnions turning in the frame of the machine and with a cross bar-15 .having a series of notches 16 with inclined sides and adapted to receive a from the carrier B.
finger 17 extendin frame extends above one The arm 18 of said arm 19 of a lever, theother arm 20 of whichshoulder thereof will bear on a stud 25 projecting from the lever 3 and carry the latter away from the shoulder of the disk 2 when the shaft J can at once turn to operate the rock shaft T, and through the intermediate devices, impart motion to the adding and recording means of the apparatus.
These operations may take place so long as the carrier B is in one of its predetermined printing positions with the finger 17 extending into one of the notch es 16. If, however, the carrier is shifted to occupy any position except with the finger 17 in one of said notches, then the finger will be brought to bear upon the upper edge of the bar to willdepress the bar 15..
, ft is sometimes desirable to shift the carrier to its difierent positions without moving which may be done by lifting the the bar 15, finger 17. As shown, this is efiected by connecting the fingerfl? to a rock shaft 26 pro vided with an operating arm 27 by means of which it may be rocked to lift the finger 17 out of the notch of the bar 15.
, Without limiting myself to the precise combination and arrangement of parts shown or any special character of adding, or recording or actuating devices,
I claim as my invention v1. The combination of a movable carriage,
adding devices,printing devices, actuating means therefor, and releasing means controlling the actuation of the printing devices, of means for retaining the carriage in different predetermined longitudinal positions, and means whereby the releasing means is rendered inefiective when the carriageis in en tain positions. 2. Tn a machine of the character described, the combination with the printing appliances and. actuating means therefor, of a stop device controlling the actuating means, a platen carriage movable to different positions opposite the printing appliances, means for holding said carriage in different predetermined positions, and devices intermediate the holding means and the stop device and controlled by the carriage to render said actuating means ineffective except when said carriage is in a predetermined position.
3. The combination in an adding'machine and with the adding and printing appliances thereof, of actuating means, a stop device controlling the actuating means, means for shifting said stop device, a sliding plat-en carriage, an arm extending therefrom, and a movable bar having notches to receive said arm, and connected to render said stop shiftsubstantially as set forth.
neaaeee 4. The combination in an adding machine and with the adding and printing appliances thereof, of actuating means, a stop device controlling the actuating means, a sliding platen carriage, an arm extending therefrom, a movable bar having notches to receive said arm, and connected to render said stop shifting means inoperative when engaged by said arm that points between the notches, and means for moving said arm into and out of engagement with the bar,
5. The combination with the sliding platen carrier and actuating means of an adding machine, of a frame having a notched bar, intermediate connections whereby the rocking of the frame controls the actuating means, a finger carried by the carrier, and means whereby the finger may be shifted to a position above the notched bar and also in position to engage the notches thereof, substantially as set forth.
6. The combination with the adding and recording means of an adding machine and actuating devices therefor, of a platen adapted to be adjusted longitudinally relative to the recording means, and means controlled by the longitudinal position of the platen to render ineffective the actuating devices except when said carriage is in a predetermined position.
7. In an adding machine, the combination with the recording means thereof, comprising a plurality of type carriers arranged \side by side and each provided with a series of numeral type, numbered keys which control the recording action platen and a carriage therefor movable to different recording positions, of devices controlled by said carriage to render said recording means ineffective except when the carriage is in a predetermined position.
8. In an adding machine, the combination with the recording means thereof, comprising a plurality of series of numeral type, a. corresponding series of numbered keys, each series of keys controlling one of the series of type, a platen and a carriage for the platen movable to difierent recording positions, of devices controlled by said carriage to render said recording means ineffective except when the carriage is in a predetermined position.
