To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, EDWIN LAWRENCE COPsEY,-a subject of His Majesty the King of GreatBritain and Ireland, residing at Old Heath, Colchester, in the county of Essex, England, have invented'a new and useful Improvement in Valveless Rotary Pumps, of which the following is a specifi 1 cation. v The present invention relates to improvements in valveless rotary pumps of the class in which the piston not only rotates around an eccentrically arranged pin secured to the casing but reciproca-tes within a cylindrical hole in the driven element at right angles to the axis of rotation, the driven element thus formed constituting a cylinder, revolving in a casing furnished with suction and delivery ports. .7 I vThe main objects of the invention are to provide the pump with means for enabling the cylinder of same to be driven by a high speed motor, and with an improved bearing for the piston, which bearing also enables that part of the cylinder which is subject to wear to be self adjusting with respectto the casing. Other objects ofthe invention will be referred to in the following description,
The present invention consists of a rotary pump in which the driving means consists of a shaft having driving means. co-acting with means at or about the periphery. of the piston containing driven cylinder. is disposed to slide.
According to, one form of the invention the driving shaft is provided with a toothed element or elementsadapted to co-act with and drive a toothed element or elements on the. cylinder such toothed elements being preferably located inside the pump casing.

As shown, the piston 1 reciprocates in an open-ended cylinder 2, the latter revolving in a casing 3 furnished with a suction'port 4 and a delivery port 5.
The piston 1, the opposite ends of which are rounded to conform to the wall of the casing 3 is slotted midway between its ends to receive two plates 6, between which works a roller 7 mounted on a pin 8 rigidly secured in the end walls of the casing 3.
The pin 8 is eccentrically disposed with respect to the axis of rotation of the cylinder to a degree equal to a half of the travel of the piston..
' The cylinder 2 is provided on one side with a ring of teeth 9 adapted to engage with teeth provided on a pinion 10 keyed on a shaft 11 arranged parallel with the pin 8 and with the axis of rotation of the cylinder 2. The shaft 11 is mounted in bearings 12 and 13 one on each side of the pinion 10, the bearing 13 being made water tight by means of a stufiing box and gland 14.. The outer end of the shaft 11 is provided with means to enable same to be coupled to an electric motor.
As shown in Fig. -1, the end 15 of the casing is made removable, though if desired both ends may be so formed, further if desired a second ring of teeth may be provided on the other side of the piston adapted to engage with a second pinion provided on the shaft 11.
By the arrangement illustrated it is possible to provide the driving shaft with along bearing on each side of the pinion and also a long bearing on the pin 8 for the piston 1.
- For the purpose of providing the seal between the sides of the cylinder and the sides or ends of the casing and at the same time to prevent metallic contact between said parts, a slight clearance is provided, which clearance, when in use, becomes filled with Whatever medium is being pumped. Frictional losses and wear are thereby overcome, the film of liquid serving as a buffer between the surfaces.
By reason of the fact that the piston has a free movementon the eccentrically disposed roller, the cylinder is able to automatically adjust itself for any wear that takes place at the periphery thereof as the pressure of the fluid in the discharge port always tends to press the cylinder up to the suction port.
The action of the pump is as follows Assuming the cylinder 2 to be rotated in the direction of the arrow, Fig. 2, the end 1 of piston 1 will be brought into communication with the suction port 4. the receding piston drawing after it a quantity of fluid equal to the travel of the piston multiplied by the area of the piston. As the piston reaches the end of its stroke communication with the suction port is cut off by the edge 2 of the cylinder 2. The end 1 of piston 1 has now come into a position similar to that occupied by the end 1 (Fig. 2) and the rotary motion being continued the contents are expelled by the now oncoming piston into the discharge port 5, the cycle of events, as far as the end l is concerned, being com- I plete when the piston occupies the position shown in Fig. 2, the edge 2 cutting off communication with the discharge port 5. The same cycle of events takes place with respect to the end 1". It will therefore be seen that the pump is continuously sucking and discharging without changing the direction of the fluid during its passage through the pump.
\Vhat I claim is 1. In a valveless rotary pump, the combination of a casing, an eccentrically disposed non-rotating pin rigidly supported at both ends in said casing, a cylinder located in said casing and adapted-to rotate around said pin, a driving shaft, a toothed element on said shaft, a long bearing for said shaft located on both sides of said toothed element, a toothed element formed on the periphery of the driven cylinder adapted to co-act with the toothed element on the driving shaft, a piston reciprocating in and rotating with said cylinder, and a slot provided in said piston midway between its ends in which said non-rotating pinis adapted to slide during the rotative movement of the piston.

a long bearing for said shaft located on both sides of said toothed element, a toothed element formed on the periphery of the driven cylinder adapted to co-act with the toothed element'on the driving shaft, a piston reciprocating in and rotating with said cylinder, a slot provided in said piston midway between its ends and plates secured within said slot between which said roller is adapted to slide during the rotative movement of the piston.
