To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Greece F. WEBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York, county of New York, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stereotype Plate- Finishing Machines, fully described and represented in the following specification and the accompanying drawings, forming a part of the same.
This invention relates to certain improvements in stereotype plate finishing machines.
After a stereotype plate is cast and in order to prepare it for use on the printing machine, it is necessarily subjected to certain finishing operations, these finishing operations usually including the boring out or shaping of the interior of the plate to make it of uniform thickness and the trimming of one or both ends.
This invention has for its object to produce an improved machine for finishing stereotype plates in which the plate may be at all times under complete control and in which the various finishing operations may be quickly and certainly performed.
lVith this and other objects in view not specifically referred to, the invention con sists in certain constructions and in certain parts, improvements and combinations as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out.

' lteferrin g to the accompanying drawings, 1 indicates a carrier the function of which is to support the plate during certain of the operations hereinafter referred to, this carrier being, in the particular machine shown, a rotating carrier, and being mounted upon ashaft 2 suitably supported in bearings in the frame of the machine. This shaft may ings 6 bolted to the end frame of the machine (see Fig. 8). This shaft 5, in the particular machine illustrated, is provided with a spiralgear 7 meshing with a similar gear 8 mounted on a countershaft 9 supported in bearings in the ends of the machine frame. In the particular machine illustrated, the shaft 9 is provided with a driving wheel 10 around which runs a belt 11, this belt also running around a drum 12 on a shaft 13 suitably supported in the frame, this shaft being the power shaft of the machine.
Machines embodying the invention in its best form will include devices for holding the plate to be finished on the carrier. While these devices may be varied in construction, in the particular machine shown they em body clamps or fingers 14, 15 which grip the plate on its side edges. 'These clamps or lingers, when employed, may be variously mounted and operated. As shown (see Figs. 8, 9 and 10) the fingers 15 are pivoted at 16 to brackets 17 fast to the carrier. An operating shaft 18 is provided, this shaft being supported in the heads of the carrier and being provided with an actuating arm 19. The shaft 18 is further provided, in the particular construction illustrated, with op-- erating arms 20 which underlie the tails of the pivoted clamps. For the purpose of adjustment, it is desirable that the clamps and the construction for operating them be such that the rip of the fingers on the plate be varie Y Vhile this may be effected in various ways, in the construction illustrated the arms 20 are provided with pivoted operating pieces 21 which lie between the arms 20 and the tails of the clamps, these pieces 21 being adjusted, as shown, by set screws 22. Springs 23hold the tails of the clamps down against the pieces 21. The fingers 1 1-, as shown, are pivoted at 24: to brackets 25 fast in the cylinder or carrier, an operating shaft 26 similar to the shaft 18 being also provided. The shaft 26 has an actuating arm 27, and also operating arms 28 on adjustable operating pieces 29, the tails of the clamps being held against these operating pieces by springs 30. The operating pieces 29 are adjusted by set screws 31.
The construction by which the clamps, when this class of plate holding devices is employed, are operated may be varied. In the best constructions, however, the means will be such that the clamps will be operated substantiallysimultaneously and the pressure of the sets of clamps made uniform. In the construction illustrated, this is effected by providing a yoke 32, this yoke being connected to the arms 19 and 27 by links 33. It is apparent that by moving the yoke the shafts 26 and 18 will be rocked and that the pressure exerted by the clamps will be equalized through the yoke. The means for operating the yoke, when the same is employed, may be variously constructed, but in the bestconstructions it will primarily be hand operated. In the particular machine illus trated (see Figs. 2, 3, 4t and 8) there is pro vided a collar 34 having an operating cam 35. This collar is supported on a sleeve 31; which also forms one of the bearings for the shaft 2 and is provided with an operating handle 37. The collar may be. backed up by a spring rod construction 37. Cooperating with the cam is a cam roll'38 carried on an arm 39 extending from a rock-shaft 10 mounted in the cylinder heads. The shaft 40 and the arm 39 may be backed up by a sprin rod construction, indicated at 39. The Shaft 40 is provided with an operating arm 11 which carries a stud 42 on which the yoke 32 is pivoted. It is apparent that, by rocking the collar from the position shown in Fig. .3 to the position shown in Fig. 4;, the shaft 40 will be rocked and the yoke 32 will be moved, thus rocking the shafts 18 and 26 and throwing the fingers 1-1:, 15 down upon the plate with an equal pressure.
As has been indicated, the yoke construction will equalize or make uniform the pressure exerted by the clamps on the plate. It may, however, be necessary, under certain circumstances, as where the plates vary considerably in thickness, to adjust both sets of clamps, and provision has been made for this through the pieces 21 and the adjusting screws 22 which enable each clamp to be individually adjusted. In some cases, however, itmay be, desirable to adjust the sets of clamps simultaneously. While this may be done in various ways, the construction particularly illustrated in Figs. 9 and 10 en ables this to be readily accomplished. in
this construction, the end of the arm 39 is provided with a split bearing 38, the hearing being adjusted by means of a screw 38. The roll 38 is mounted 011 an eccentric stud 37 which is clamped in the split bearin this stud being provided with holes for a pin wrench. By loosening the clamp bearing the roll .38 may be set nearer to or far ther from the center of the cam 35 and thus the throw of the lever 39 and the move ment of the shaft 40 adjusted. This adj usizment will of course vary the movement of the yoke and the consequentpressure of both sets of clamps against the plate.
In the best (JODSlJlfHCtiOiiS embodying the invention, certain plate forwarding devices will be employed, the function of which will be hereinafter referred to. While these forwarding devices, when employed, may be variously constructed, as shown, they comprise bars l3 arranged to slide through perforations in a web l t formed in the interior of the carrier. In the construction shown (see Fig. 8) these bars are notched at 45 to provide a bearing for the ec ge of the plate. In the particular machine illustrated, these bars are connected by links 4% to rock arms 4.7, these arms being fast on a shaft 48 supported in the cylinder heads. This shaft 48 is provided with an operating arm 49 which runs on a movable cam 50 which will be hereinafter referred to.
In the particular machine illustrated, the plate carrier is stationaryduring the time the plate is placed thereon and this construction will be employed in machines which embody the invention in its best form. After the plate has been placed upon the cylinder and secured thereto by the operation of the clamps, in the manner described, the carrier will be caused to rotate. While this may be effected in various ways, in the construction illustrated, the wheel 12 before referred to as mounted on the power shaft 13 is loose upon the shaft and is clutched thereto and unclutched therefrom by a clutch of suitable construction. The details of this clutch arenot fully illustrated, as they have no bearing upon the present invention,'and as any suitable form of clutch may be'employed. As shown, the wheel 12 is provided with a female sleeve 51, this sleeve being entered by a male sleeve 52 formed on a collar held from rotation on the shaft 13. with a grooved hub 54; which is engaged by a pair of studs 55 on a pair of arms 56 mounted on a rock-shaft 57 supported in the machine frame. provided with an operating arm 58 which is connected to a link 59 on an operating This collar is provided This rock-shaft 57 is arm 60 mounted on a shaft 61 supported in the bed plate of the machine frame. In the particular construction illustrated,this shaft 61 is provided with a double treadle 62, 63. It is apparent that by forcing downward the end 62 of the treadle the clutch will be operated, the wheel 12 being thus clutched to the shaft 13 and the carrier, through the belt 11 and the worm gearing heretofore described, star ed to rotate.
In the best constructions embodying the invention, a lock will be employed to prevent the operation of the starting mechanism until such time as the plate is securely clamped to the carrier. lVhile this look may be variously constructed, in the particular machine shown, it is so constructed as to be released by the operation of clan'iping the plate to the carrier. Referring more particularly to Figs. 1 and 4c, the treadle 62 connected by a link G l to a lever 65. pivoted at 66 to the machine frame, this lever (.arrying a roll, 67 which bears until such time as the plate is locked to the ca rier upon a cam 68 mounted on the collar El i; be fore referred to. The lever is backed up by a spring rod construction 69 of the ordinary typc. hen the position of the collar is shifted from that illustrated in Fig. 8 to that illustrated in Fig. 4, the cam 68 is moved out from beneath the roll 67, thus permitting the treadle to be depressed far enough to operate the clutch.
Machines embodying the invention will include means for trimming the plate to which means the plate is presented by the rotation of the carrier. In the machine illustrated, the trimming means include cutters for each end of the plate, these cutters being arranged to operate between the clamps by which he plate is held on the carrier. As shown, the end trimming means include cutters 70, these cutters being mounted on shafts 71 which are continuously driven by belt wheels 7 2 from the shaft 13.
Machines embodying the invention in its best form will include not only end trimming means but also means for shaving the interior of the plate, and when these means are employed, there will also be employed a holder for retaining the plate in position during this interior shaving operation. lVhile the construction of the holder may .be varied, in the particular machine illustrated, it comprises a semi-circular box 73 which is cast in one piece with the frame. If desired, this box may be made hollow, as indicated at 74, and provided with inflow pipes 75 and outflow pipes 76 to permit the introduction of water for'cooling purposes. As shown, the holder is located alongside the path of movement of the carrier, so that the carrier rotates, the plate, after the trimming devices have operated, is
delivered to the holder. The plate clamps, as the end trimming proceeds, in the particular machine shown, hold the plate by parts which are trimmed off during the end trimming operation, but the forwarding devices 43 operate to insure the delivery of the plate to the holder, as these forwarding; devices act on the main part of the plate.
In constructions embodying the invention in its best form, means will be provided to lock the plate to the holder during the shaving operation, and, in the particular ma chine shown, these locking devices operate on both edges of the plate so as to hold it firmly in the holder. As illustrated, the locking devices for what may be termed the forard edge of the plate, include a hooked bar 77 mounted on a supporting rod 78 extending across the machine. The locking devices for the lower end of the plate, in the particular machine shown, include a hooked bar 79, this bar being also mounted on a rod 80 extending across the machine. Suitablemeans will be provided for operating these bars, when this form of locking means is employed, and, in the best constructions, the means will be such as to operate the bars simultaneously. As shown, the bar 77 has an operating tail 81 to which is pivoted a link 82 in turn pivoted to one of the arms 83 of a bell-crank lever 83, 84- supported on a. rod 85 extending across the machine. The bar 7 9 is provided with a similar operating tail 86 which is connected by a link 87 to an operating block 88 pivoted on a rod 89 ex tending across the machine. This block 88 is connected by a link 90 to an arm 91 of a bell-crank lever 91, 92 mounted on a rock shaft 93 Xtending across the machine. The arms 8 1 and of the bell-crank levers referred to are connected by a rod and turn buckle construction Set by which simultaneous operation of the bell-cranks and locks is obtained and proper adjustment efiected. The shaft 93, as illustrated (see Fig. 7) is provided with an operating arm 94- connected by a link 95 to an arm 96 of a bell crank lever 96, 97 mounted on a stud 98 on the left hand end of the machine. The arm 97 of this bell-crank carries a roll 99 which is operated by a cam 100. In the machine illustrated, this cam 100 is a movable cam and runs at one half the speed of the carrier. As shown, the cam 100 and the cam 50 before referred to are mounted on a collar 101 (see Fig. 2) loose on a sleeve 103 which forms an end bearing for the shaft 2. The collar 101 is provided with a gear 10-1 which meshes with a gear 105 fast on a short shaft 106 (see Fig. 2) supported in a bearing 107 rising from the machine frame. The shaft 106 is further provided with a gear 108 which meshes with a driving gear 109 formed on the shaft 2, the train of gearing described being a two to one gearing. The
collar 101 also carries another cam 110, the function of which will be hereinafter referred to. In the machine shown, the looking devices 77 and 79, when the plate is placed upon the carrier and its rotation begun, are in the position shown in Fig. 5. At this time, the roll 99 is on the low part of the cam 100. lVhen, however, the plate has passed the end trimmer and has been carried into the holder, the roll 99 runs up onto the high part of the cam 100, throwing the locking devices into operation. The cam then holds the locking devices in their operative position until the shaving operation is completed. To prevent overthrow, in the construction illustrated the bell-crank 83, 81 is provided with a tail 111, this tail carrying a stop screw 112 which strikes the rear of the holder. When the roll 99 passes off the high part of the cam, the locking devices will be thrown out by an ordinary spring rod construction 11.3 fast to the bell-crank 83, 8-1. 7
It will he understood, of course, that the forwarding devices 13 must release the plate either before or as soon as the plate locks 77 and 79 take control of it. The cam 50 which operates the shaft 18 is, therefore, so arranged as to rock the shaft and withdraw 'the forwarding devices 13 as soon as the locks have closed upon the edges of the plate.
Vfhile, as has been indicated, the construction of the plate locking devices may vary, and also the construction of the operating means therefor, it is desirable that the construction and operation of these devices be such as to relieve, as far as possible, the operating connections from strain. It will be understood that when the shaving knife is operating, there will be a heavy strain on the locking devices for the forward edge of the plate, that is, in the construction shown, the hooked bar 77. The connections illustrated are so arranged that the link 82 and the bell-er: nk arm 83 to which it is connected form a toggle which is straightened by the act of throwing the locking bar 77 into pocast integral with the carrier is provided with an arm 11 1 and to this arm is connected by belts, or in any other suitable manner, a shaving knife 115.
In the construction illustrated, after the plate has been delivered to the holder, the plate clamps released and the plate locking devices have taken control of the plate, thecontinuous rotation of the carrier brings the shaving knife into contact with, and causes it to complete the shaving of the plate. The operation will be understood by reference to Figs. 5 and 6 which show the knife in different positions. On the first revolution of the carrier, the knife passes around idly, as illustrated in Fig. 5, the plate being at this time under the control of the plate clamps and being operated upon by the end trimmers, and on the second revolution of the carrier the knife comes into operation.
In the particular machine shown, the cam 85 is so designed as to cause the clamps to release the trimmed off ends of the plate shortly after the parts have reached the position illustrated in Fig. 6. This permits the end pieces to drop backward out of the machine.
After the shaving operation is completed, the plate is discharged from the holder. lVhile this might be eflected in various ways, in the particular machine shown, the forwarding devices 13 again come into action, this movement being provided by the cam 50, and, taking control of the plate by its rear ec ge, push it out of the holder,,the locking devices 77 and 79 being of course released by the cam to permit this operation.
In the particular machine shown, as soon as the plate is shaved and is clear of the holder, the machine is positively stopped. While this may be effected in various ways, in the particular construction illustrated, the arm 58 on the shaft 57, which is the shaft which carries the clutch collar moving arms- 56, has connected to it a rod 116 passing loosely through an arm 117 fast on a short shaft 118 supported in a bracket 119 extending from the frame. fast on it an arm 120 to which is connected a rod 121, this rod (see Fig. 7) being con nected to a lever 122 pivoted at 123 on the machine frame. This lever 122 carries a stud 12 1 which runs on the cam 110 before referred to, this cam being formed as a circular disk with the exceptionof a notch 125. The rocking of the lever 122 is, in the construction illustrated, efiected by means of a spring rod construction 126 (see Fig. .7) of usual type. To insure the posiive stopping of the machine, the shaft 5, in the construction illustrated, is provided with a disk 127 having a notch 128 arranged to be engaged by a ratchet block 129 pivoted at 130 on the machine frame. This block is connected by a spring rod 131 to the end 62 of the treadle. When this end of the treadle is rocked up, as will occur when the machine is stopped, the hook 129 will engage the notch 128 and positively stop the shaft 5.
If desired, additional mechanism may be employed to insure the instantaneous stopping of the machine. As shown (see Fig. 6) the shaft 9 is provided with a friction drum 132 which is surrounded by a brake band 133, the end of this band being con nected by an adjustable link 13 1 to an arm 135 on the shaft 57 before referred to,
It has been stated that the spring rod con struction 126, when the notch is in proper position, forces the lever 122 up and disengages the clutch. To avoid the use of a very heavy spring on this construction, the shaft 57 may be provided with an arm 136, this arm bearing on a compression spring 137, the tendency of which is to rock the shaft and assist the spring rod construction 126 in its action.
It is desirable that means be provided by which an emergency stop of the machine may be effected without regard to the posi tion of the various parts. While this may be accomplished in various ways, in the construction illustrated the rod 116 is surrounded by a spring 138 bearing at one end against the arm 11? and at the other end against a collar on the rod. This spring will permit a lengthwise movement of the rod 116 through the arm 117 and thus permit the clutch to be disengaged without regard to the position of the notch 125 in the cam 110. This lengthwise movement of the rod 116 is effected by stepping on the end 63 of the treadle. The cam 68 at this time will be so positioned as to permit a movement of the rod 6 1 and the spring surrounding the rod 131 will permit the necessary upward movement of the end 62 of. the treadle, even though the latch 129 is not opposite the notch 128.
Changes and variations may be made in the construction by which the invention is carried into efiect. The invention is not, therefore, to be confine to the particular construction herein shown and described except as defined by the appended claims.
What is claimed is:
1. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary plate carrier, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, end trimming means located alongside the path of movement of the carrier, and an interior shavingknife which operates on the plate while in the holder.
2. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of a holder to which the carrier delivers, plate locking devices on the holder, and means for automatically operating the locking devices when the plate has been de livered to the holder and for releasing the plate clamps, and finishing devices.
3. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices cooperating with the holder, end trimming means operating on the plate while it is on the carrier, and an interior shaving knife operating on the plate when it is in the holder.
4:. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, end trimming means located alongside the path of movement of the carrier, a shaving knife, and means for giving the carrier two revolutions during one of which the plate is trimmed and during the other of which it is shaved.
5. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps and plate forwarding means, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices cooperating with the holder, end trimming means, an interior shaving device, means for operating the locking devices, means for releasing the plate clamps, and means for operating the forwarding means after the shaving is completed.
6. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of a shaving knife mounted thereon, a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices cooperating with the holder, end trimming means to which the carrier presents the plate, means for operating the locking devices and the clamps, and plate forwarding means mounted on the carrier.
7 In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps and plate forwarding means, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices coeperating with the holder and operating upon both edges of the plate, end trimming means, a shaving knife moving with the carrier, means for auto matically operating the locking devices when the plate is positioned in the holder, and means for operating the forwarding means after the shaving is completed.
8. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps and plate forwarding means, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices cotiperating with the holder and operating upon both edges of the plate, end trimming means, a shaving knife moving with the carrier, means for antomatically operating the locking devices when the plate is positioned in the holder, means for operating the forwarding means after the shaving is completed, and neans for giving the carrier two revolutions during one of which the plate is trimmed and the other of which it is shaved.
9; I11 a plate finishing machine, the combination with a plate carrier, of finishing means operating on a plate on the carrier, driving means for the carrier including a starting mechanism, and a locking device for preventing the operation of the starting mechanism.
10. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a carrier having plate clamps, of finishing means, driving means for the carrier, startingmechanism, a locking device for preventing the operation of the starting mechanism, operating means for the clamps, and connections whereby the operation of the clamps releases the locking device for the starting mechanism.
11. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of operating means for the clamps, plate finishing means, driving means for the carrier, starting mechanism for said driving means, a lock for said starting mechanism, connections whereby the operation of the clamps releases the lock,.and a stop mechanism for the carrier.
12. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a carrier having plate clamps, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, forwarding means on the carrier, trimming means operating upon the plate between the clamps, locking devices cooperating with the holder, and an interior shaving knife.
18. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having sets of plate clamps acting upon opposite edges of the plate, of connections between the clamps whereby the pressure exerted by them is equalized, clamp operating means, and plate finishing means.

In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having sets of plate clamps acting upon opposite edges of the plate, of connections between the clamps whereby the pressure of the sets of clamps is equalized, operating means for the clamps, means for adjusting the pressure of each set of clamps, and plate finishing means.
15. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having sets of plate clamps acting upon opposite edges of the plate, of connections whereby the clamps are simultaneously operated, and means for simultaneously adjusting the pressure of the sets of clamps upon the plate.
16. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary plate carrier, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices operating on opposite edges of the plate, and an interior shaving knife operating to shave the plate while in the holder.
17 In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary plate carrier, of a V holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices operating on opposite edges of the plate, and an interior shaving knife mounted on the carrier and operating to shave the plate while in the holder.
18. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary plate carrier, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, a locking device for operating on the forward edge of the plate," and operating means including a toggle for operating the locking device, the toggle being arranged to be straightened when the device is locked.
19. In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, trimming means operating on the plate between the clamps, forwarding means mounted on the carrier, locking means cooperating with the holder and operating on the forward edge of the plate, and an interior shaving knife moving with the carrier.

In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of trimming means, plate forwarding means mounted on the carrier, a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, looking devices operating in connection with the holder, an interior shaving knife mounted on the carrier, means for giving the carrier two revolutions on the first of which the trimming means operates and the plate is delivered to the holder and upon the second of which the plate is shaved and delivered, and means for moving the forwarding means out of operative position before the shaving knife operates and into operative position after it operates.

In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of trimming means, plate forwarding means mounted on the carrier, a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, looking devices operating in connection with the holder, an interior'shaving knife mounted on the carrier, means for giving the carrier two revolutions on the first of which the trimming means operates and the plate is delivered to the holder and upon the second of which the plate is shaved and delivered, means for moving the forwarding means out of operative position before the shaving knife operates and into operative position after it operates, a'stop mechanism, and means for automatically operating the same on the second revolution of the carrier.

In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of trimming means, an interior shaving means, a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices operating in connection with the holder, means for giving the carrier two revolutions to effect the trimming and shaving, the trimming being effected on one revolution of the carrier and the shaving on the other, a stop mechanism, and means for automatically operating the same on the second revolution of the carrier.

In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of trimming means, an interior shaving means, a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices operating in connection with the holder, means for giving the carrier two revolutions to effect the trimming and shaving, the trimming being effected on one revolution of the carrier and the shaving on the other, a stop mechanism, means for automatically operating the same on the second revolution of the carrier, and means for stopping the carrier in any position thereof.

In a plate finishing machine, the combination with a rotary carrier having plate clamps, of trimming means, plate forwarding means mounted on the carrier, a holder to which the carrier delivers the plate, locking devices operating in connection with the holder, an interior shaving knife mounted on the carrier, means for giving the carrier two revolutions on the first of which the trimming means operates and the plate is delivered to the holder and upon the second of which the plate is shaved and delivered, means for moving the forwarding means out of operative position before the shaving knife operates and into operative position after it operates, a stop mechanism, means for automatically operating the same on the second revolution of the carrier, and means for stopping the machine in any position of the carrier.
25. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a rotary cylinder having bearings thereon, a longitudinal rock shaft mounted in said bearings,means for rocking said shaft, arms carried by said rock shaft, and means on said arms for supporting the edge of a printing plate.
26. In a machine of the character described, the combination of a rotary shaft, a cylinder mounted thereon and having hearings in the ends thereof, rock shafts mounted in said bearings and located inside of the cylinder and means on said rock shafts for supporting the edges of the plate.
