Be it known that I, HARVEY W. WALTER, a citizen of the United States, a resident of Peoria, in the county of Peoria and State of Illinois, have invented new and useful Improvements in Tampons or Pessaries, of which the following is a specification.-

My invention relates to improvements in tampons or pessaries, and particularly to female diseases; that is, venereal diseases, affecting the pelvic organs, such as leucorrhea, inflammation and infection of the uterus and vagina. y 16 The principal purpose of this invention is the provislon of such an article for use V'by physicians, or other skilled practitioners, and also by the patients themselves, whereby a suitable antisepticor medicament for the local treatment of such diseases may be applied eiiicaciously to the diseased parts.

A further object is the provision of such an article which combines a tampon or packing of absorbent material, inclosed in a shell or cup of non-absorbent and elastic material, the article as' a whole fitting in the vaginal canal so as to present the'tampon or packing ,which has been treated to the` os and cervix of the uterus.. This non-absorbent s@ and elastic material may also be surrounded by ashell of absorbent packing, so as to receive and absorb any discharges, and which may also-be treated medically so as to affect local a plication to the walls of the vaginal canail;

To the accomplishment of the foregoing, and such other objects as may hereinafter appear, my .invention consists in the article hereinafter .described and then sought to be t@ dened in the appended claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawing,

which shows two forms of articles made in Y' accordance with my invention, it being understood that various changes may be 't5 made in practice, within the scope of the claims, withoutdigressing from my inventive idea.

such articles designed for the treatment ofv Referring now to the drawings, and particularly to Figs. l and 2, the numeral 1 designates the inner packing or tampon which is absorbent and adapted to be treated with any desired antiseptic or medicament.

This is preferably made of cotton, though other material is suitable. lt is substantially pear-shaped, as shown, and has the cordor strinv, 2, attached thereto for the purpose of wlthdrawal.

This packing or tampon, l, is inclosed in the 'cup or shell 3, of non-absorbent and elastic material, such as lambss wool, this in turn being inclosed in a shell or covering of absorbent material 4, `such as cotton.

Particular attention is directed to the shape of the article in its peculiar adaptability to the treatment of the cervix and os uteri, as in leucorrhea, the medicated tampon'tting closely against the cervix and os uteri and the elastic shell, which by the way slightly expands under moisture, partially surrounding those parts and holding the article in position. Any dischar e is absorbed by the packings 1 and 4, and t e latter may also be medicated to treat the walls of the vaginal canal.

This article may be used either with or without the outer shell 4 as indicated in Fig. 3. lt is to be understood that the physician applies the suppository in position with suitable instruments, after having medicated the same according to conditions.

This article .may also be readily adapted to home use without necessitating the use of instruments. For this purpose, I compress the suppository and hold it in this position by readily soluble bands 5, 'made of a gelatinous or 'like substance. Due to the restricted size of the article, it may be readily applied, and as the bands 5 melt the elastic cup or shell 3 expands, holding it securely in place in the walls of the vaginal canal. lts application is therefore simple and eiiicient. 'This form may be made either with or without the outer shell 4.

lt is also advisable to use at times a liquid proof sack or layer 6, between the non-absorbent material 3, and the outer shell or layer 4, to prevent leakage of the medicine or any other matter.

ln cases of falling of the uterus this packing acts eiliciently-to afford relief on account of its particular form,as it holds the parts in their normal position, immediately giving beneficial results,

walls of said canal, and which is readily applied and securely held in position.

What I claim is: i 1. An article of the character described, including a core of absorbent material and a surrounding cup-like layer or shell of elastic iibrous and non-absorbent material,

f having its open end extending beyond the end of the core, so that an entrance opening is formed therein leading to said core.

2. An article of the character described, including a tampon or packing of absorbent material, and a surrounding shell or layer of elastic and non-absorbent material, and an additional shell or layer of absorbent material about said elastic or non-absorbent material.

3. An article ofthe character described, including a pear-shaped tampon or packing of absorbent material, and a surrounding cup shaped shell of librous elastic and nonabsorbent material with its edge normally extending abe fe the outer end of said tampon or packing.

4. An article of the character described, including a tampon or packing of absorbent material, a surrounding shell or layer of brous elastic and non-absorbent material, an outer shell or layer of absorbent material, and soluble means for holding said shells in a compressed condition. l

5. An article of the character described, including a solid tampon or packing of absorbent cotton, a -shell or layer of lambs Wool surrounding said tampon, and an outer shell or layer of absorbent cotton. A

6. An article of the character described, includinga solid core of absorbent material, a surrounding layer or shell ofv elastic and non-absorbent material, and a soluble band for holding the core and layer or shell in a 4a compressed condition.
