REVERSE-PHASE SAFETY-RELAY FOR MOTOR-CIRCUITS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1'7, 1917.
Application filed October 5, 1914. Serial No. 865,004.
To all whom it may concern:
Be-it known that I, CHARLES H. SPANG- LER, a citizen of the United at the city of Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Reverse-Phase Safety-Relays for Motor Circuits, of which the following is a speci fication. 7
My invention consists in an improved device for protecting multiphase motor-driven mechanism, such as elevators, from damage which is liable to occur in case of accidental reversal of phase. It comprises a rotatably mounted circuit-breaker wheel and cooperating electro-magnets for imparting swinging movements thereto, as hereinafter fully described in connection with the accompanying drawings and the novel features of which are particularly pointed ,out in the claims.
Figure 1 is a diagrammatic viewin'dicating in simple form the essential features of my invention in operative connection with a motor circuit as stated.
Fig. 2 is a sectional'view on the line 22 of Fig. 1. p
As shown this rotatable wheel is formed with parallel split rim portions 4 and 4", of
sheet aluminum or like conductive but nonmagnetic material, each having a so-called air-gap, 5, 5, between the spaced-apart ends with radiating or boundary lines 4" 4; spokes or plates 6 extending from a central hub 7 to the outer edges. of the bands 4, 4 so as to form-a cup-like split-rim wheel, the air-gapped bands 4, 4 forming, as shown, a double-annulus rim.
This double rimmed wheel is fixed toa central pivot shaft 10 mounted .in a suitable bearing 11, so as to swing, as shown, between the central leg 12 of each of E-shaped electro-magnets 1 2, 12, and the inner and outer end legs 12 and 12 thereof respectively. These magnets 12, 12 are suitably spaced apart and arranged with their poles converging toward the pivot shaft 10, as indicated. Separate energizing coils 14, 14 for these cores, are connected in delta across States, residing 'trated the extent cuit, comprising three phase to the line wires 15, 16, 17, as indicated in Fig. 1, so that the fluxes produced in the cores by the normal phase relation through the coils, will cause the double annulus to be swung to the position illusof this turning movement being limited by the boundary lines e1". of the air-gaps 5, 5
'When a reversal of phase occurs from any cause, and the changed flow of current through the coils 12, 12 causes the annulus to swing in the direction indicated by the arrow 20, Fig. 1, such movement is arranged to automatically operate the main line circuit breaker indicated at 21, so as to cut off all flow of current until the cause of such reversal has been found and remedied. This is effected, as indicated, by means of a cam 22- fixed to the pivot shaft 10 and adapted to operate a lever 23 to effect contact with a post '24 so as to close the shunt circuit indicated and energize the breaker-operating solenoid 25.
The use of the in connection with the magnets 12, 12 as described, provides a double torque with a' given wattage consumption, operating to rock the wheel as set forth; and the annular parallel rim portions 4, 4,
arrangement of these rim portions as specifically described provides an especially advantageous and economical construction.
What I claim is:
1. A reverse phase safety relay for a multiphase alternating current motor circuit, comprising E-shaped electro-magnets, and a rotatable non magnetic circuit-breaking wheel having parallel airvgapped rim portions; said air-gapped rim portions being arranged to swing between the poles of said magnets and their 'joint movement in either direction being limited by the boundary lines of the air-gaps.
2. A reverse phase safety relay for a multiphase alternating current motor cira I pair of electro-magnets and a non-magnetic circuit-breaker wheel having spaced-apart split rim portions form mg a double annulus; said split rim portionsbeing arranged to swing adjacent the poles of the respective magnets and forming air-gaps, and said rockin movement being imparted to said wheel y the combined action of said magnets upon the split rim portions as limited by the boundary lines of said air-gaps.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CHARLES H. SPANGLER.
