Be it known that I, MATT BUZZARD, a. citizen ot' the United States, residing at Fenton, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, have invented new and useful Improvements in Pneumatic-Tire Intlaters, of which the following is a specication.
This invention is an improved device for generating acetylene gas and inflating a tire by means of such gas, one object of the invention being to provide an improved acetylene gas generator which is simple in construction, is extremely compact and which can be readily operated and regulated, another object being to provide an improved method of inilating tires and to utilize acetylene gas as a medium for inlating such tires and without the necessity of compressing the gas or employing` compressing mechanism.
rEhe invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed.
rIhe invention further consists in a method of inating a tire by generating acetylene gas and conducting such gas while under pressure to an inflatable tire as hereinafter described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings:
Figure 1 is a central sectional view of an acetylene gas generator for use in inflating tires and constructed and arranged in accordance with my invention.
Fig. 2 is an elevation of one end of the generator.
Fig. 3 is a similar view showing the other end of the generator.
In the construction of my improved acetylene gas generator I provide a pair of vessels 1, 2 which are substantially identical in construction and are shown here as of cylindrical form, of equal diameter, and as provided with an open 'I inner end and a closed outer end. In practice the vessels are preferably castings and may be very cheaply manufactured. A partition disk 3 is arranged to lit in the opposed open ends ofthe vessels and is provided with an annular Hange 4: between the vessels, packing rings or gaskets 5, of rubber or other suitable material being interposed between the flange l and the opposed ends of the walls of the vessels. The vessel 2 has a seat 6 arranged centrally on its closed outer end. The vessels are detachably secured together by a hoop or band 7 which passes around them Specification of Letters Patent.

and which bears on the closed outer ends thereof and is engaged between spaced lugs S, 9 with which the vessels 1, 2 are respectively provided. That portion of the hoop or band which passes across the outer end of the vessel 1 has an enlarged central circular portion 10 which is provided with a central circular opening 11. An eccentric cam 12 is mounted on the center of the opposite end of the hoop or band as at 13, is adapted to engage in the seat 6 and has a lever handle 1lby means of which said eccentric cam may be turned. IVhen the eccentric cam is in the position shown in Fig. 1 with its lever arm 14 bearing against the outer end of the vessel 2 said cam co-acts with the hoop or band to securely clamp the vessels together and on opposite sides of the partition disk, as will be understood. By turning the eccentric cam in the direction indicated by the arrow the tension on the vessels will be released and the band may be removed rom the vessels and the latter separated.
The vessel 1 forms a water reservoir and is provided with a central circular Unthreaded opening in its closed outer end for the reception of the enlarged portion 15 of a tube 16. The smaller end of the tube is threaded. as at 17 and is screwed through a threaded central opening in the partition disk. At the outer end of the tube is an enla rged head 1S which is peripherally milled and which is arranged in the opening 11 of the hoop or band. By means of this head the tube may be screwed or unscrewed and may be drawn upwardly a slight distance when desired to cause the water from the vessel 1 to pass through the central opening in the partition disk and into the generating chamber formed in the vessel 2 and in which the carbid is placed as indicated at a. A. disk 19 is arranged on the vessel 2, on the carbid and co-acts with a spring 20 to hold the carbid compactly in the vessel 2.
A tube 21 of rubber or the like leads from the vessel 2 and is employed for conveying acetylene gas under pressure from the generator directly to a tire for inflating the tire by means of such gas. The gas is generated at such pressure that no compressing means whatever is required when inflating a tire with acetylene gas in accordance with my invention.
A suitable packing ring 22 is arranged be`v tween the head 18 of the tube 16 and the outer end oi` the vessel l to prevent leakage. The tube 22 has its bore normally closed by a valve 23 which is arranged in a seat 24 formed in the enlarged portion 15 of the tube. A coiled spring 25 normally holds the valve in closed position and said spring is held under Iany desired degree oi' compression by means of a plug 25 which is screwed in the head 18 as at 26 and which is provided with a central opening 27. The spring closed valve permits acetylene gas to escape from the generator when the pressure of the gas becomes excessive. By means of the valve, the spring and the tension regulating plug the pressure of the gas supplied to the tire may be regulated as may be desired.

An acetylene gas generator comprising a pair of vessels, ap'artition between said vessels, gas discharge means :forV one of the vessels, a tube extending through theother vessel and the partition and detachable from the latter to permit the flow of Water from said vessel to the other vessel, a valve to close said tube, a spring to hold said valve in closed position, and means to vary the tension or' said spring.
