To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM F. DIMELOW,
a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain'new and useful Improvements in Recoil- Pads for Firearms, of which thefollowing is a specification; I
This invention relates to devices for'diminishing the effect of the recoll or klCk of rifles, machine guns and other firearms which are fired from the shoulder, and its object is to provide a simple and highly efficient device of this. kind which can be easily and quickly applied to or removed, from the stock ofthe rifle.
With the herein stated object in view, the invention consists in a novel combination and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter described and claimed reference being had to the accompanying drawing in which Figure 1 is an elevation of a gun stock showing the application of the recoil pad thereto, and

Referring specifically to the drawing, 5 denotes an ordinary gun-stock to which the recoil pad 6 is applied. This pad is apiece of rubber dimensioned and shaped to fit the butt end of the stock. The pad is mounted on a base plate 7 having outstanding spring tongues 8 at its edge designed to engage the top, bottom and sides of the stock to hold the pad in place thereon. The spring tongues are integral with the base plate,- and the lat-.
ter is made of spring metal to obtain the necessary resiliency for the tongues. The pad is fastened to the base plate in any suitable manner. The heads of the rivets or other fasteners 9 by which the pad is secured ,to the base plate are sunk in the former so as "'to' leave the outer face thereof without projecting hard parts.
The pad can be easily and quickly applied to the stock, and also removed therefrom without the use of-tools, and it is securely held in place by the spring tongues. No other fastening isnecessary, and the stock is not marred or mutilated by the pad or its attaching means.
The device may, if desired, be permanently fastened in place on the stock by screws passing through the top and bottom tongues, the same being perforated for this purpose.
When the pad is in place, the rifle can be held in the ordinary manner so that its aim is not afiected. The rifle can be pressed firmly against the shoulder, improving the aim and saving the shoulder from shock.
The friction surface of the-pad prevents the butt from sliding off the shoulder, and the pad also protects the rifle from jar when dropped to the ground, and as the surface of the pad is smooth it will not pick up dirt. j The device will be .made in various sizes so that it may be applied to diflere'nt makes of rifles and similar firearms.
I claim v A recoil pad for the butt of firearms comprising a rigid base plate seating against the butt end of the stock, and having marginal gripping members detachably scour-- ing the base plate to said end of the stock in contact therewith, said gripping members being located at the ends of the base'pla'te to engage the top and bottom of the stock, and the base plate also having resilient gripping members at the sides to engage the sides of the stock.
