Description

EDWARD BATWELLQ Improvement in Thill Coupling.
No. 122,213.- 7 Patented Dec. 26,1871.
kw. \wnawzw M a 5mm PATENT pFFIcE.
EDWARD BATWELL, OF
Y]? SILANTI, MICHIGAN.
IMPROVEMENT IN THlLL-COUPLING.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,213, dated December 26, 1871.
To whom it may that I, EDWARD BATW'ELL, of
Be it known Ypsilanti, in the county of Washtenaw and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Im provement in Shaft-Couplings for Wheeled Vehicles; and I do declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing and to the letters of reference marked thereon and being a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 shows my invention in perspective secured to a section of axle and shaft. Fig. 2 is a like view of the same detached. Fig. 3 is a cross-section on-the line w :10, Fig. 2.
Like letters refer to like parts in each figure.
This invention has for its object the construction of a device to facilitate the removal of shafts and the ready adjustment of a pole, and the decrease of noise and rattle when the iron becomes worn, by attaching the packing to the side of the shaft-iron instead of placing the packing in the rear and between the shaft-iron and clip or axle.
In the accompanying drawing, A represents a clip provided with a rigid jaw, B, secured thereto, and projecting forward at right angles with the clip. 0 is a rigid draft-pin attached at OIIB of its ends to the jawB, and upon this pin the E is a latch-jaw, the rear,
shaft-iron D works. end of which is pivoted to the opposite side of the clip, and is provided with a notch or slot, at, which is designed to engage with the unattached end of the draft-pin. D is the shaft-iron made in the usual way, except that each end of the socket b, which works on the draft-pin, is countersunk, as shown, to receive suitable leather or other packing, a.
The operation of this device is so simple that a further description thereof in this connection is deemed unnecessary.
What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of the rigid jaw B, provided with a rigid draft-pin, shaft-iron D, and packing c, all arranged relative to each other and to the clip A, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
EDWARD BATWELL.
