WHEEL-PLOW.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 10 1917.
Application filed May 3, 1916. Serial No. 95,168.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, OAMILLO S. Nononoss, a citizen of the United States, residing at Bushnell, in the county of McDonough and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wheel-Flows; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to wheel plows, and more particularly to a hand operated wheel plow for cultivating the ground in gardens, truck patches, etc.
One of the objects of this invention is the provision of a main frame for the wheel plow constructed in a manner to provide a frame of narrow horizontal transverse width for adapting the plow to be used in very narrow passages, and yet suiiiciently reinforced to provide a frame of exceptional stability.
Another object of this invention is the provision of means for attaching the cultivating implements to the main frame of the plow whereby to adjust the depth of the implements in an efiicient and speedy manner.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a wheel scraper mounted in the main frame of the wheel plow and provided with means for actuating the wheel scraper at will by the person operating the wheel plow.
A further object of this invention is the provision of a hand operated wheel plow consisting of few parts, strong and durable, and which can be manufactured and sold on the market at nominal cost.
These and other objects will more fully appear as the nature of the invention is more clearly understood from the following specification, the subject matter of the claim, and the views illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which, a
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the wheel plow in its complete form show ng the wheel scraper held in contact with the wheel of the plow by the person operating the same.
Fig. 2 is an edge view of the main post of the frame, on line 2-2 of Fig. 1 looking in the direction of the arrow and partly shown in section, showing the detail con struction thereof, the manner of securing the brace members thereto, and the manner of mounting the cultivating implements and the wheel scraper therein.
Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the means for attaching the cultivating implements in the lower end of the main post of the frame of the plow, the parts of the cultivating implements being shown as broken away.
Fig. 4 is a perspective view of the wheel scraper, and its supporting and operating arm.
Referring to the drawings wherein similar reference characters denote corresponding parts throughout the several views, the
main frame consists of a curved upright post comprising the post 1 provided at its upper end with the lateral extending lug 2 and the lower lateral extending lug 3, and the post 4 provided with the upper lateral extending lug 5 and the lower lateral extending lug 6. The posts 1 and 4 are similarly curved and positioned in spaced parallel relation to each other with their respective lugs projecting outwardly in opposite directions to each other, the lugs 2 and 5 of the posts 1 and 4 respectively have registering bores formed therethrough through which bores extends the bolt 7, and the lugs 3 and 6 of the posts 1 and i are also formed with registering bores therethrough and through which bores extends the bolt 8.
Connected at one of their ends to the bolt 8 in the lower ends of the posts 1 and 4; and bearing against the outer ends of the lugs 3 and 6 of the respective ends of the posts 1 and 4, are the lower connecting bars 9 and 10, extending forwardly from the lower ends of the posts 1 and 4 and having their forward ends connected to the bolt 11 passing through the hub 12 of the wheel 13, and also connected at one of their ends to the bolt 7 in the upper ends of the posts 1 and 1 and bearing against the outer ends of the lugs 2 and 5 of the respective posts 1 and 4, are the upper connecting bars 14, and 15, extending forwardly and downwardly from the upper ends of the posts 1 and 4 and having their forward ends connected to the bolt 11 of the hub 12 of the wheel 13 at the outer sides of the ends of the connecting bars 9 and 10 also secured upon the bolt 11. Interposed between the upper ends of the posts 1 and 4c are the forward ends of the handle brace bars 16 and 17, through which ends passes the bolt 7 for firmly securing the forward ends of the handle brace bars 16 and 17 between the upper ends of the posts 1 and 4, the forward ends of the handle brace bars 16 and 17 also perform the function of maintaining the upper ends of the posts 1 and 4 in spaced relation to each other. The handle brace bars 16 and 17 diverge rearwardly from their point of connection with the upper ends of the posts 1 and 4, and are each provided in their rear ends with a plurality of apertures 18 for adjustably securing the rear ends of the bars 16 and 17 to the handles 19 and 20 through the medium of the bolts 21 and 22, respectively, at a point remote from the lower ends of the handles 19 and 20, the lower ends of the handles 19 and 20 being secured to the outer sides of the posts 1 and 4 by the bolt 23 which passes through the lower ends of the handles 19 and 20 and through the posts 1 and 4 at a point in proximity to the lower ends thereof, the handles being braced apart by the intermediate brace bar 24 and the upper brace bar 25 adjacent the hand hold ends of the handles 19 and 20, which are capable of being adjusted to suit the heights of different operators.
Interposed between the lower ends of the posts 1 and 4 is the stub post 26 of the bracket 27 which is preferably connected by the two center bolts 28 to the head 29 of the cultivator attachment, which in this instance shows the attachment as comprising the cultivator teeth 30. The stub post 26, which is positioned between the lower ends of the posts 1 and 4, is provided with the aperture 31 through which passes the bolt 8 which also passes through the lugs 3 and 6 of the posts 1 and 4. The stub post 26 is capable of being swung upon the bolt 8 for adjusting the depth of the cultivator attachment when the nut upon bolt 8 is loosened to attain the proper adjustment of the attachment, the nut being thereafter screwed upon the bolt 8 for firmly securing the stub post 26 in its adjusted position between the lower ends of the posts 1 and 4, and at the same time the stub post 26 also forms the function of maintaining the lower ends of the posts 1 and 4 in spaced relation to each other and cooperates with the forward ends of the handle brace bars 16 and 17 in maintaining the posts 1 and 4 in parallel spaced relation throughout their lengths.
'Interposed between the posts 1 and 4 of the main frame of the plow is the arm 32, provided with the aperture 33 for pivotally mounting the arm 32 upon the bolt 34 which passes through the posts 1 and 4 at a point substantially midway between their ends, the arm 32 being thus mounted between the posts 1 and 4 and for maintaining the arm 32 spaced from the inner walls of the posts 1 and 4 the washers 35 are employed. Secured upon the lower end of the arm 32 in any suitable manner is thescraper blade 36 adapted to engage the periphery of the wheel 13 for cleaning the latter of the accumulation of mud or dirt thereon when desired. To operate the arm 32 for causing the scraper blade 36 to engage the periphery of the wheel 13, the upper end of the arm 32 projects above the handle brace bars 16 and 17 and between the same, and is provided with the two adjacent apertures 37, and in the rearmost of the apertures 37 is hooked the forward end of the operating rod 38, which extends upwardly and rearwardly and passes through the apertured lug 39 of the brace bar 25 of the handles, the projecting end of the operating rod 38 being provided with the ring or loop 40 adapted to be engaged by one of the fingers of the right hand of the person using the wheel plow for drawing the operating rod 38 rearwardly for positioning the scraper blade 36 into engagement with the periphery of .the wheel 13, the parts being shown in these respective positions in Fig. 1 of the drawings for the sake of illustration. The scraper-blade 36, however, is normally held out of engagement with the periphery of the wheel 13 through the medium of the tension spring 41 having one of its ends hooked in the forward aperture 37 in the upper end of the arm 32 and the other end of the spring 41 being hooked in the apertured upturned ends 42 of the handle brace bars 16 and 17 which project forwardly of the upper ends of the posts 1 and 40f the main frame of the wheel plow, so that, when the operator of the wheel plow releases his '7 finger from engagement with the loop 40 at the rear end of the operating rod 38 the tension spring 41 immediately draws the upper end of the arm 32 forwardly thus swinging the arm 32 upon thepivot bolt 34 in the posts 1 and 4 causing the scraper blade 36 to be moved rearwardly out of engagement with the periphery of the plow wheel 13.
From the foregoing it will be seen that I have devised a duplex main frame for a wheel plow which is not only narrow in width adapting the same for the use of the single wheel but which provides a wheel plow which may be operated between very narrow rows, and at the same time by the of providing a wheel scraper for cleaning the wheel atwill and the simple manner for operating the scraper, and a further advantageous point resides in the provision of the stub post and bracket for attaching the cultivator attachments to the main frame of the wheel plow in a manner for readily and emciently attaching the various cultivator attachments in adjusted positions therein, the stub post 26 of the bracket 27 also provides a spacing means for the lower end of the upright posts of the main frame, and also the fact that the forward ends of the handle brace bars also performs the function of spacing means between the upper ends of the upright posts of the main frame, the upright posts or arcuate members of the quadrant-a1 sections of the main frame are maintained in spaced parallel relation throughout their lengths.
Having described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination with a hand cultivator plow comprising a frame consisting of two frames secured together in opposed spaced relation, a wheel rotatably mounted in the forward end of said frame, handles operatively secured to said frames, and brace bars connecting said handles to the forward end portions of said frames, of a scraper arm pivotally mounted intermediate its ends between said frames and brace bars, a scraper blade carried by the lower end of said arm, a retractile spring connecting the upper end of said scraper arm with the forward end portions of said frames, an operating rod slidably mounted upon the plow handles and connected to the upper end of said scraper arm, and a finger ring fixed to the upper I end of said rod whereby the rod may be actuated by hand to move the scraper blade into engagement with the periphery of the plow wheel.
In testimony whereof I have signed my 40 name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
