SIGNALING DEVICE FOR AUTOMOBILES.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Fatented Apr. MIP, 1217.
Application led April 19, 1916. Serial No. 92,223.
To all whom it may concern.'
' Be it known that I, ERNEST C. CoX, a citizen of the United States, anda resldent of Newport News, in the county of Warwick and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Signal-- ing Devices for Automobiles, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in signaling devices for automobiles, and it consists in the combinations, constructions, and arrangements herein described and claimed.
An object of my invention is to provide a signal which may be located at the rea-r of the vehicle,.as for instance, on the fender,
said signal being normally out of view but bein arranged to be brought into view .immedlately by the pressure of a push button.
A further object of my invention is to providea device of the type described in which the operating parts are few, and are therefore not liable to easily get out of order.
Other objects and advantages will appear in the following specification, and the novel features of the l'invention will be particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
' 6--6 of Fig.I 5.
My invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings forming part of this application, in which Figure 1 is a view showing my invention applied to a vehicle.
Fig. 2 is a section along the line 2-'2 of Fig. 3.
Fig. 3 is a section along the line 3-3 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 4 is a detail sectional view showing they circuit closer for the light.
Fig. 5 is a' sectional view along the line 5 5 of Fig. 2.
Fig. 6 is a` sectional viewV along the line l Fig. 7 is a circuit connection.
In carrying o ut casing 1 in which my invention I provide a is disposed a magnet M,
vin this lnstance of the double fold type,
whose armature A is pivotally connected at one end by means of a link 2 with the bell crank lever 3 which is fulcrumed at 4.
Mounted on the base 5 of the casing is the sleeve 6 which forms a socket for a shaft 7 bearing a signal 8 having the word Stop or some similar legend thereon. A spiral spring 9 surrounds the shaft 7, one end of t e spiral spring engaging the casing 1, see
diagrammatical view of the pressed Fig. 3, and the other end being secured to the shaft 7 Extending from the shaft 7 is an arm 10 having a contact finger 11. The arm` 10 is connected by means of a link 12 with the end of the bell crank lever 3, and the spring 9 tends to keep the parts normally in the position shown in Fig. 2,I in full lines, in which the armature A is held away from the magnet M.
At 13 l have shown a light whose base bears against the spring 14 carried by the housing. 15, the end of the spring bearing against the head of a slidable pin 16.
From the foregoing description of the various parts of the device, the operation thereof may be readily understood.` The circuit connections are those shown in Fig. 7, in which the battery B is brought into circuit with the magnet M when the push button .P is closed. This attracts the armature A which, through the medium of the link 2, lever 3, link 12, arm 10,y turns the shaft 7, so as to bring the signal 8 into the position shown in Fig. 1 in which the legend is displayed to the'rear of the vehicle. At the same time that the arm 1,0 is moved, the iinger 11 comes into contact with the pin 16, thereby tending to press the pin inwardly against the sprmg 14. If the switch S, see Fig. 7 should be closed, then current from the battery B would flow through the'lamp 13', thus causing the latter to light up. This lamp may be a red lamp or any other suitcushions the movement of the signal, and
thus prevents jar which might otherwise tend to rack the parts. It also serves as a means for insuring a good circuit connection, since the pin may be moved inwardly and the contact becomes closer as the pin is on by the finger 11. Immediately on the release of the push button, the magnet M is denergized and the parts are restored to their normal position by means of the sp1-in 9.
l c aim 5 1. In an automobile signal, a magnet, an
armature therefor, a rock shaft, a stop arm carried thereby, means for energizing the magnet, means connected with saidy armature for moving said rock shaft, a signal carried by the shaft and arranged to move with it, and means arranged to beengaged by said stop arm for cushioning the movement of the rock shaft, said cushioning means comprising a pin arranged to beengaged by said stop arm, a spring arranged to bear against said pin, an electric lamp having its base ybearing on the opposite end of the v spring, and circuit connections for causing the lampto be lighted when the stop arm engages the pin.
.2. In a signaling device for automobiles, a magnet, means for energizing the magnet at will, an armature forsaid magnet, a rock shaft, a signal device carried by the rock shaft, lever and link connections between and said rock shaft for rock.
said armature ing the latter, a stop arm carried by said nections With rock shaft, a-movable pin arranged to b'e engaged by said lstop arm,a spring for cushioning the pin,`an electric lamphaving conthe spring at the opposite end from the pm, a spring carried by the rock shaft and arranged to be placed under tenf sion during the movement of the armature for restoring the parts when said armature is released, and circuit connections arranged to be established through the electric lamp on the engagement of the pin by the stop arm.
