Description
U. J. SMITH.
Patented Apr. 10, 1917.
31400144206 U LYSSES d. 5MITH ULYSSES JOSEPH SMITH, OF READING, PENNSYLVAI\TIA.
DISINFECTI1\TG APPABATUS.
Application filed ctober 3, 1916.
T0 all whom z't may concern:
Be it known that T, Unrrssns J. SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Reading, in the county of Berks and State of Pennsylvania have invented certain new and useful Tmprovements in Disinfecting Apparatus, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improve mente in disinfecting apparatus and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with vitiated air; and it is an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character wherein disinfecting matter is caused to intersect a passageway or duct through which passes the air to be treated.
The invention also has for an object to provide a novel and improved apparatus of this general character including a chamber adapted to contain a disinfecting material together with means whereby said chamber may be sealed or closed in an automatic manner after a predetermined material within said chamber has been consumed.
It is also an object of the invention to provide a novel and improved apparatus of this general character wherein the air pas sage or dust is closed or sealed in substantially an automatic manner when the disinfecting material has been substantially en tirely consumed.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of my improved apparatus whereby certain important advantages are attained and the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advantageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth.
The novel features of the invention will hereinafter be definitely claimed.
In order that my invention may be the better understood, I will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a longitudinal vertical sectional view taken through a disinfecting apparatus constructed in accordance with an embodiment of my invention, a coacting vent being indicated by dotted lines;
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. M), ll9l7.
Serial No. 123,527.
Fig. is an end elevational view of the device as herein disclosed; and
Fig. 3 is a view in top plan of the apparatus as herein embodied.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawngs, C denotes a container of predetermined dimensions and prefer-ably rectang'u lar in form and having its upper end or top open, while the interior or chamber afiorded by said container C is divided, through the medium of the vertically disposed partitions 1. into an intermediate chamber 2 and the end chambers 8.
The portion of the bottom 4- proper of the container C immediately below the intermediate or central chamber 2 is depressed as indicated at 5, and with which the lower end of said intermediate or central chamber 2 communicates. In communication with the depressed portion 5 are the ducts or passageways 6, the upper wall 7 of which constituting the base or bottom of the end or side chambers 3 and which are inclined downwardly in a direction toward the depressed portion 5.
One of the passageways or ducts 6 is in communication with the atmosphere while the second passageway or duct is adapted tohave in communication therewith a vent or conduit V leadingfrom a mausoleum or other inclosure or structure wherein vitiated air may be created.
The central or intermediate chamber 2 is adapted to be initially filled with disinfecting crystals and which results in said disinfected material intersecting or obstructing the flow of the air through the ducts 6 SO that before said air is delivered to the atmosphere it is thoroughly disinfeoted.
The chambers 3 are adapted to be filled with a sealing medium preferably comprising a mixture of sand and plaster Pars, and
the partitions 1 at a predetermined point intermediate the height or length thereof are provided with the openings 8 aflording communication to the chamber 2, whereby it will be perceived that when the consumption of the disinfecting crystals causes the top or level thereof to drop below the open ings 8, the mixture within the chambers 3 will flow within the chamber 2 and thereby V close or seal the portion of the chamber 2 above the top or level of the disinfecting material.
The lower ends of the partitions 1 termi nate above the walls or bottoms 7 of'the Chambers 3 and thereby producing the openings 9 affording communication between the chambers 2 and 3. It will be perceived that when the disinfecting material is substantially entirely consumed, the mixtre within the chambers3 will also flow into the chamber 2 through the last namedopenings 9 and thereby assure a closing or sealihg of the ducts 6 whereby said ducts are hermetically sealed. r
From the foregoing description, it is thought to be obvious that an apparatus constructed in accordance with my invention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be assembled, and it will also be obvious that my invention is susceptible of some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason I do not Wish to be understood as limiting myself to the precise arrangement and formation of the several parts herein shown in carrying out my invention in practice, except as hereinafter claimed.
I claim: A
1. A device providing a ventilating passageway arranged for communication with the chamber of a mausoleum and the like comprising an outer casing and inner walls to provide a central chamber for disinfecting material to be fed into said ventilating passageway with side chambers having openings at their bases and atp0ints intermediate their heights in communication With said central Chamber whereby the ventilating passageway and the central chamber above the disinfecting material are sealed by sand or other granular material copies of this 'patent may be obtained for contained Within the side chambers after the disinfecting material in the central chamber has been consumed.
2. A device providing a ventilating passageway arranged for communication with the Chamber of a mausoleum and the like comprising an outer casin and inner walls to provide a central chamuer for disinfecting material to be fed into said ventilating passageway With side chambers having openings at theirbases and at points intermediate their heights in communication with said central chamber whereby the vntilating passageway and the central chamber above the disinfecting material are sealed by sand or other granular material contained within the side chambers after the disinfebting material in the central chamber has been consumed, said ventilating pas sageway at opposite sides of the central chamber being disposed upwardly.
3. A device providing a ventilating passageway arranged for communication With the chamber of a mausoleum and the like comprising an outer casing and inner walls to provide a central chamber for disinfecting material to be fed into said ventilating passageway with side chambers having openings at their bases in communication with said central Chamber whereby the ventilating passageway is sealed by sand or other granular material contained Within the side chambers after the disinfecting material in the central chamber has been consumed.
In testimony Whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
ULYSSES JOSEPH SMITH.
