IMPROVEMENT IN HEMMERS FOR SEWING-MACHINES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,180, dated December 26, 1871.

A represents a presser-attachment, with a point, B, slot 0 D, and a needle-hole, E, similar to what has been heretofore used, together with a heinlner-scrollpermanently attached, except that I make the walls a of the slot parallel with each other to the end next to the needle, and the end wall I) perpendicular to aa; and I make a considerable enlargement of the slot on the left hand side of the tongue B near the base, as

shown at F. With this device I combine a detachable scroll, G, which is formed on one end of a plate, J properly shaped for supporting the said scroll in the necessary'relation with the point B when clamped to the top of A by the thumb-screw I, a notch, H, being provided in a suitable guide for guiding narrow flat braid to the needle to be sewed on the cloth. The said tongue curves under the piece A toward the needle, as shown in Fig. 5, said piece A being similarly curved to forlna descending passage extending nearly to the needle. The notch F is provided for dropping the point of the scroll below the point B and raising it out again in applying and removing the said scroll, which,-after being so dropped below the point, is moved forward into the narrow part of the slot to its working position; and when it is to be detached it is first moved backward to notch F and then lifted out. The scroll being oscillated on the screw I may be adjusted at the edge next the needle nearer to or further from the point B, to have the space between it and the point correspond to the thickness of the goods. The edge of the scroll nearest the needle and the end of point B ter minate at about the same point, and by this the introduction of the goods is greatly facilitated by passing the rolled or folded corner under the presser beyond the point B, inserting the point in the fold and the latter between the point and the scroll, and then drawing'the goods backward.

I propose to curve the heel of the point B, as shown at B, to facilitate the entry of the goods into the slot 0, but more particularly to facilitate the hemniing round or curved corners, which it does by allowing the fold to be partly raised on the edge of the cloth before the latter comes into line with the slot.

Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A'hemmer, consisting of presser A, having slot 0 D and point B, and the detachable scroll G J secured by a screw, 1, or its equivalent, as described.

2. In hemmers, the piece A, notched at'F, as and for the purpose described.
