Description

UNITED STATE$ SAMUEL J. HOGGSON, OF NEW HAVEN, CONNECTICUT, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF,
WILLIAM A. PECK, JR., AND WHITING- S. SANFORD.
IMPROVEMENT IN PROCESS OF PRINTING [IN ENAMELED 0R VITREOUS SURFACES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,170, dated December 26, 1871;
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL J. HOG-GSON, of
New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented a new Process for Printing on Enameled or Yitreous Surfaces; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
This invention relates to an improvement in ornamenting, lettering, or figuring enameled or vitreous surfaces, such as china, porcelain, glass, 866. This has heretofore been done on enameled articles previous to enameling, the enamel covering the figures made upon the unglazed surface. The object of my invention is to improve the process by producing the required figures or ornamentation in a simpler and more perfect manner; and it consists in printing directly upon an enameled or vitreous surface with elastic or flexible type, employing as a printing material an enamel, and after so printing to fuse the enamel of the printed figures by means of heat in an oven, or otherwise.
I take the article to be ornamented, its. surface havin g been previously finished, and having prepared an enamel of the required color I coat anelastic or other suitable type with this enamel, then press the type upon the surface Where the figure is to be set; removing the type the enamel is left on'the surface and is then submitted to the heat to fuse the enamel of the figure; and the work is complete, and as much more perfect thanthe ordinary hand-work on the unglazed surface as the best press-work is better pression. v
, SAML. J. HOGGSON. I
