Be itknown that I, 'Fonns'r H. Mom'- coim'ar, a citizen of the United States, residing at East Orange, county of Essex, and .State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements-in Attach ments for Adding-Machines and Type- \Vriteis, of which thefollowing is a specification.-- 4
This invention relates to attachments for adding machines and typewriters. The present improvements are, adapted for use on adding machines, typewriters, combined adding machines and typewriters, andother machines generally 7 similar thereto.
The present invention is designed to facilitate the posting of a continuous ledger sheet and a separate bill or statement to the end that the statement discloses only the transactions of the current month and their transcription in duplicate on the ledger sheet so that both entries .are made. at the same time by the machine, due to the interposition of a sheet'of carbon paper. The entries for the current month, or any particular month, may require only two or three lines and it has been proposed heretofore in mechanical posting devices to rovide for the foldover statement and let get sheet for this work, thus necessitating a new lmlgclishcct for each new'statemcnt sheet. By the use of a-scparate statement sheet or bill and a separate ledger sheet, a single ledger 'shcct may be used month after month, accumulating items from time to time, until it is entirely covered with entries struck through a carbon sheet when the eutrics are placed on successive statements entered from time to time to show the different months transactions.

In practice, a ledger sheet is usually wider than the statement sheet and the position on the ledger sheet for a-given entry is usually on a different line, ordinarily higher up, considered from-top to bottomof the sheet, than a line on which the given entry should appear on the statement. As heretofore practised, the operator has to meet this condition of two sheets of paper of difi'erent widths and a carbon sheet of a width different from the ledger and statement sheets and, also, the necessity for making the entry at different positions, higher or lower, on the two sheets and that the cat must follow the preceding entry on ea given sheet. a
To meet these conditions, it is necessary to alinc. vertically the ledger sheet and then to properlyalino vertically the statementsheetso that the vertical column lines on the two sheets will exactly register, even though a carbon sheet is between the ledger sheet and stateme ntsheet. It is also acces sary to ascertain the line of entry of the ledger sheet and then shiftthe statement sheet upwardly or downwardly, as the may be, to a corresponding line for. entry on the statementsheet. As the last visible part of each entry is usually made on.the extreme right ma :gin of the statement sheet,
heretofore this line of entry would be iii-- visible on the lager sheet as it will beentircly covered up by the statement sheet and carbon sheet so that the preceding entry is concealed.
The present improvements overcome the foregoing diilicultics by the provision, first, of means for automatically printing on the ledger sheet at the right of the margin of the statement sh act 'a line or other indicia which indicates the last line of entry on thelcdgor sheet 50 that this iudicia or line is exposed and serves as a guide for the up and register with the corresponding lines on the ledger sheet despite the fact that these latter lines are covered by the carbon sheet. To that end, I provide an improved means constituting a secondary vertical alinement guide which constitutes an abutment for either the right-hand 'or left-hand margin of the statement sheet.
My improved secondary vertical alinement guide may be used in connection with the platen of anv writing machine,'adding machine, or number printing or other like machine by itself and it may be combined, relatively adjustable or otherwise, with any preferred or ordinary paper guide on the carriage. This secondary vertical alinement guide may be combined with, or used separately from, a paper fingerand if used therewith, may be connected thereto or mounted separate therefrom; o'iher modifications could be resorted to, as I 11.1 the first, so far as I am aware, in nrowble a vertical aline ment guide, serving as u! abutment for the margin of the paper and disposed adjacent to the platen for that purpose, whether such abutment alinement guidebe stationary, adjustable, attached to, or combined with, a paper finger guide.
So far as I am aware, I am the first to provide means for printing, in off-set or spaced relation to the printing section of a number printing device, an indicia printer, whether the same operate simultaneously with the number printing device or not. Furthermore, I believe myself to be the first to provide a spaced or separated indicia or sign printer so related to, Mid combined with, a vertical paper alinement guide that the number will be printed on one side of said guide and the indicia, sign, or symbol, printed on the other side of said abutment paper guide to the end that, in effect, the printing is split on opposite sides, considered horizontally, of said abi tm'mlpaper guide and which results in the .mmoer being printed on the outer and narrrwer sheet, such as the bill or sta temenl. sheet, and the sigin-symbol, or indicia being printed on the rear or ledger sheet for purposes of line identification.
The showing of the invention in the accompanying drawings, and the description thereof hereinafter appearing, are illustrative, rather than restrictive, of the scope thereof, as the invention is susceptible of various modifications.

Referring first to Fig. 1, 1. is a. part ofthe carriage, 2, the platen, 3, the table orpaper support and 4, the ribbon and ribbon reel, all of which may be of any construction. The usual rubber rolls which pres the paper against the platen, are controlled by the finger-piece 5. paper guide which is adjustably mounted,
but consists, broadly, of a vertical alinement paper guide adapted to serve as an abutment for the margin of the sheet, whether the paper guide be used at the right or the left of said sl|eet.- A portion of the edge may be curved as at 12, so as to conform closely, without touching, to the platen 2 and the papers thereon without, however, interfer ing with the part 10 serving as an alining abutment for the edge of the paper. I may combine with the paper guide 10 a paper finger which may be positively connected thereto, as shown at 13 in Fig. 8, or which 6 may be an entirely separate device, either stationary or adjustable, and, the paper guide may be used with or without the use of the paper finger 13. In Fig. 9, I have shown the paper abutment guide 10 alone. 1 The paper guide 10, or may be pro vided with an alining edge 14 which can be used in connection with the usual scale or straight edge on the machine for horizontal alinement where the type strike on the paper. 1
Referring to Fig. 1, and to Fig. 6, I have shown printing segments constituting, considered generally, a number printing sec tion 15 such as used, for instance, on the well-known Ellis adding machine. These printing segments are adapted to strike the paper as shown in Fig. 6, when the carriage is in proper position and willthen deliver their imprint at the left of the' paper guide 10 to print upon the statement sheet the total or item. Heretofore it has been proosed to provide a signal or symbol printer in connection with these printing segments and in other machines signal printers have been used with other number printing devices. My improvement in that respect consists in providing a sign, signal, or symbol printing device 16 which is oil-set or spaced laterally away from the printing section 15,
as shown in Fig. 6, so that it will print to the right of the paper guide 10, whereas the printing segments will print to the left thereof, thus, -in effect, bringing about a split in theprinting and causing the number to be printed on'the statement sheet and the sign or symbol which is indicated at 17 to be printed on the ledger sheet. So far as I am aware, I am the'first to provide means for this purpose whether the number printing and symbol printing devices be considered alone, or, combined with the paper guide such as generally shown at 10. This symbol printer and the splitting of the printing overcomes the defect heretofore existing and affords an absolute guide, for purposes of line identification, despite the fact that the previous entry on the ledger sheet is completely covered.
Assuming that the work to be performed merely contemplates the use of aledger sheet 18, a statement sheet 19 and carbon sheet 20, these are first associated to aline the sheets along the top and left hand edges, as shown in Fig. 3. The sheets are then inserted in the machine, using the right-hand paper guide 6 on the back of the carriage to cooperate with the right-hand edge of the ledger sheet 18. The sheets are then turned up to the position shown in Fig. 1. The symbol or sign 17 indicating the line of last entry on the ledger sheet being exposed and plainly visible, the platen is turned so. that the part 14 is opposite this line. There is now a vertical and horizontal alinement of the wider or ledger sheet 18. The statement sheet 19, however, is too far to the left and not in proper horizontal alined position, because the statement sheet 19 usually has a deeper heading 'th in the ledger sheet and corresponding horizontal lines would, therefore, be below correct positions on the ledger sheet. The statement sheet 19 is consequently taken hold of and drawn up to the position of the ordinary commonly used horizontal line guide on the carriage, the lever 5 having been moved to release the gripping of the paper so that this shifting of sheet 19 can be cbtained. When pulling the sheet 19 vertically, it is also shifted latorally to bring its right-hand margin against the paper guide 10. This having been done, as shown in Figs. 2 and 4, the statement sheet 19 is thus vertically and horizontally alined so that its registration with the ledger sheet 18 will be accurate. The pressure rolls controlled by the lever 5 are then thrown into holding position so that the sheets 18, 19 and 2C are securely heldto the platen, as in Fig. it.
As shown in Fig. 4, the sheets'are in proper position for the next entry, the balance on the old account having been previonsly printed by the printing section 15 on the first line of the statement, as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 7 which also prints the sign 100 17 if not already appearing on the ledger sheet. It ill be noted that the last entry on thestatement sheet, which is also struck through to the ledger sheet, is $500 in the charge column and $500 in the balance 001- 105 umn with the marl: 17 printed only on the ledger sheet 18 at the right and directly opposite the balance column.
In Fig. 5, .the sl eet shows a second entry for the eurrentmonth and the new balance 11a! and also the printing of the mark 17 on the ledger sheet 18 which will thus indicaie the position for the next entry on the ledger sheet when the latter is put into the machine at some future date.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new antl desire to secure by Let ters Patent, is
1. In a printing machine having a platen. the combination with a freely projecting 120 vertical alinement paper guide disposed adjacent the front of said platen and adapted to serve as an alu tment for an edge of one or more outer sh ets of a narrower width than the under sheet, at the front of the 125 platen, and means for holding an under sheet or sheets against the platen. outside or beyond the edIes of the outer narrower sheet independently of the outer sheet,
whereby the outer sheet may be freely adjusted alined and guided by the paper guide independently of the under sheet.
2. In a printing machine having a platen, a. freely projecting vertical alinement paper guide disposed adjacent the front of said platen 'and adapted to serve as an abutment for an edge of that portion of the paper which is at the front of the platen, and a paper finger connected to the paper guide said paper guide being innermost in relation to the paper finger whereby the paper finger is adapted to bear on the under sheet while the paper guide engages the edge of an outer sheet.
3. In a printing machine having a platen, a freely projecting vertical alinement paper guide disposed adjacent the front of said platen and adapted to serve as an abutment for an edge of that portion of the paper which is at the front of the platen, and a paper finger connected to the paper guide, said paper guide being innermost in relation to the paper finger whereby the paper finger is adapted to bear on an under sheet while the paper guide engages the edge of an outer sheet, the alinement paper guide and paper finger'being adjustable as a unit in the direction of the length of the platen.

Ina printing machine having'a platen, the combination with a vertical a-linement paper guide serving asa-n abutment for the edge of the paper, of a number printing device comprising means for printing a number at one side of the said paper guide and means for printing a sign or symbol at the other side of the paper guide in spaced relation to the number which is printed.
5. In a printing machine having a platen, the combination with a vertical alincment pa.- per guide serving as an abutment for the edge of the paper, of a number printing device comprising means adapted for simultaneously printing a number at one side of the said paper guide and for printing a sign or symbol at the other side of the paper guide in spaced relation to the number.
6. In a printing machine having a platen, the combination of a rear side edge guide for one edge of a plurality of sheets of different widths, a front side edge gage for an edge of the 11arro\\'e| "sheet, and means positioned and adapted for holding the plurality of sheets against the platen, when the said sheets are initially adjusted thereon and for engaging only the wider sheet when the narrower sheet is individually adjusted and gaged by the front side edge gage.

In a printing machine having a platen, the combination of arear side edge guide for one edge of a plurality of sheets of different widths, a front side edge gage for an opposite .edge of the narrower sheet, and means positioned and, adapted for holding the'plurality of sheets against the laten when the said sheets are initially ad usted thereon and for engaging-only the wider sheet when the narrower sheet is individually adjusted and gaged by the front side edge gage. f
8. In a printing machine having a platen, the combination of a rear side edge guide for one edge of a plurality of sheets of different widths, a front side edge gage for an edge of the narrower sheet,-means positioned and adapted for holding the plurality of sheets against the platen when said sheets are initial y adjusted thereon and for engaging only the wider sheet when the narrower sheet is individually adjusted and gaged by the front side edge gage, and additional means ipositioned. and adapted for holding the wider sheet against the platen at all times.
9. In a billing machine, means for holding two sheets in superimposed relation with their edges offset, means for printing a numberon one sheet adjacent its edge, and
means for simultaneously printing an identifying symbol on the other sheet only.
10. In a billing machine, means for hold ing two sheets in superimposed relation with their edges ofi'set, means for printing a number on the outer sheet adjacent its edge, and means for simultaneously printing an identifying symbol on the under sheet only.
11. In a billing machine, a side edge guide adapted to serve as an abutment for the edge of the outer one of a plurality of sheets so that the edges of the sheets maybe relatively ofl'set, means for printin a number on'an outer sheet ad acent an so go thereof, and-means for simultaneously printing an identifying symbol on the .under sheet '12. In a billing machine, a platen, a side edge paper guide, and a number printing device comprising means for printin a number at one side of an imaginary ine running through said side edge ide and means for printing a sign or sym. 01 at the other side of said imaginary line.
