GARMENT-FORMER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 1c, 1916. Serial No. 104,137.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JuLIUs OTTO VON STETTEN, a subject of the Emperor of Austria, and resident of St. Louis, Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Garment-Formers, of which the following is a specification containing a full, clear, and exact description, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part hereof. 1'
The objects of my invention are to construct internally heated forms for the purpose of drying and partially shaping wearing apparel, especially hosiery, with a portion, especially the toe portion, detachable from the remainder of the former. a
I do not wish to be limited in my application to hosiery drying members but for purposes of illustration of wearing apparel have selected hosiery formers. I am also aware of the presence of heating members of various conformations in the art but am directing my disclosure and claims to the detachable toe.
My invention has for its specific purpose the reduction of the number of irons to pro duce adefinite output. In laundries and knitting mills a large number of sizes of formers are necessary to finish the various sizes of hosiery. It is especially desirable that for-half sizes, entirely different formers should not be necessary. The material variation in size in the foot portion in the various sizes lies in the length; for this reason a detachable toe is desirable since toe bortions of different lengths may be used with one former.
Simplicity, low cost of operation, labor saving and speed in operation are among my principal objects. With the above and other objects in view, my invention has relation to certain novel features of construction and operation, examples of which are described in the following in the accompanying drawing in which:
Figure 1 is a fragmental longitudinal sectional elevation of the preferred form of my device showing the detachable toe.
Fig. 2 is an enlarged detail of the flange connection between the detachable toe and the former proper.
Fig. 3 is a cross-section Fig. 1.
Fig. 4 is a fragmental longitudinal sectional elevation of the modified form of my device, showing the detachable toe.
on the line 3-3 of specification and illustrated Fig. Fig. 4.
Referring to these figures I will first describe the preferred form in which 6 designates the former proper and 7 the detachable toe; 8 designates proper and 9, the partition in the detachable toe. The arrows indicate the possible circulation of the heating medium through the former proper and the detachable toe. The former proper and the symmetrical with respect to the axis 1010; 11 designates the wall of the former proper and 12 the wall of the detachable toe. These two walls are of equal thickness. The union between the detachable toe and the former proper is made by a scarf joint consistingof the two tongues 13 and 14. he screw 15 passing through 13 and into 14 secures the tongues in their relative positions; the screw 15 is countersunk so that when in the position shown in Fig. l, the head is flush with the external surface of the wall 12 of the detachable toe.
The tachably secured to the by a tongue and groove joint; 16 designates the tongue and 17 the groove.
By these means a detachable toe former is produced in which the juncture is steam tight, simple in construction and the changes from one toe to another can be easily made by simply unscrewing two screws such as 15.
The operation of securing and removing the detachable toe is obvious from the pre vious disclosure.
My modified form is structurally the same in all particulars as the preferred form except screws such as 15 are absent and the detachable toe portion is made in two parts instead of one, and the method of securing the parts of the detachable toe together and of securing them to the former proper is different.
18 designates the wall of the former proper; 19 designates the wall of the body portion of the detachable toe and 20 designates the wall of the toe portion of the de tachable toe; 21 designates the scarf joint detachably securing the wall of the former proper to the wall of the body of the detachable toe; 22 designates the scarf joint detachably securing the wall of the body of the detachable toe to the wall of the toe portion of the detachable toe; 23 designates the partition in the former proper and 24 desigllatenteol Apr. 3, 1917..
detachable toe are 5 is a cross-section on the line 5-5 of the partition in the former partition of the former proper is departition of the toe ed; 26 designates a V former proper,
nates the partition in thebody portion of the detachable toe; 25 designates a hole pass-V ing through the center of the partition 24 and partially into thepartition 23. The hole in the'partition 23 is tapped and threadbolt of such length that when it passes through hole 27 in the toe portion of the detachable toe and through partition 24, the threads at its extremity will screw into the hole 25 for such a depth that the head of'bolt 26 will be flush inthe countersunk opening at 27; by this means the the body of the detachable toe, and the toe portion of the detachable toe can be held securely together; to prevent a leak around the bolt 26 at 27 bolt 26 may be threaded near its head with threads of the same pitch as those near its extremity; the bolt 26 may then be screwed into the wall What I claim and mean tosecure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a device of the character described, a hollow garment former proper, and a hollow detachable toe, partitions formed in said hollow garment former proper and said hollow detachable toe respectively, and means for detachably securing said hollow garment former proper and said hollow detachable toe, whereby said partitions will be detachably secured so as to form continuous partitions.
2. In a device of the character described, a hollow detachable toe, a hollow garment former proper, said toe and former secured detachably by a scarf joint, a partition formed integral in said hollow garment former proper, a partition formed integral Copies of this patent may be obtained for in said hollow detachable toe, a tongue and groove joint securing them detachably so that a steam tight juncture is made between said hollow garment former proper and said detachable toe and between said partitions.
3. In a device of the character described, in combination with a hollow garment r'ormer proper, a partition formed integral therewith, a hollow detachable toe, a partition formed integral therewith, but spaced apart from the toe extremity of said hollow detachable toe, and means for detachably securing said hollow garment former proper and said hollow detachable toe, whereby said partitions will be detachably secured so as to form a continuous partition, and two adjacent chambers in communication with each other in said hollow detachable toe will be formed. 7
4. In combination with a hollow garment former proper, a hollow detachable toe, longitudinal partitions formed integral in said hollow garment former proper and in said hollow detachable toe, and means for detachably securing said partitions so as to form longitudinal continuous chambers when said hollow detachable toe is secured to said hollow garment former proper and means located in said hollow detachable too for establishing communication between said chambers.
' In testimony whereof, I have signed my name to this specification, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
