IMPROVEMENT IN THROAT-CHECKS FOR HORSES.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,114, dated December 26, 1871.

To all persons to whom these presents may come:

Beit known that I, SAMUEL FRENCH, ofBoston,

of the county ,of Suffolk and State of Massachusetts, have invented a Throat-Check for Horses,

or in other words, a new and useful or improved apparatus for checking or stopping a horse while rnnnin g away; and I do hereby declare the same to be fully described in the following specifica tion and represented in the accompanying drawing making part thereof, and of which Figure 1 is a view of the apparatus as applied to a horse, his head-stall, and bridle. Fig. 2 is a front view of the throttler to be hereinafter described.

The said throttler A consists of an inverted bow, m, provided with a rounded projection, a, arranged within it in manner as shown, the whole being formed of metal, or of metal or other suitable material covered in whole or in part with leather. At its upper ends the throttler is provided with eyes or openings to enable it to be suspended by straps s 8 directly under the throat of a horse. The throttler, instead of being so made, may consist of an oval-shaped or parabolical block provided with arms extended from opposite edges of it, and having eyes or loops at their ends, the arrangement of the arms and the block being substantially like that of the projec- "tion a and the rest of the throttler, as shown in the drawing.

Fig. 3 is a front view, and Fig. 4 an edge view of a throttler made in manner as last described.

The suspension straps s s extend upward through loops or pulleys b affixed to the headstall B, and thence down and are looped to the bit-rings e e or to rings d, or equivalent devices going through them, each of the straps or hangers 3 being provided with a long loop e at and above its connection with the bit-ring. To the middle of one side of each loop a rein, h, is affixed. This rein is the check-rein and is auxiliary to the regular driving orbridle rein 6 applied to the bit-rings in the ordinary manner.

On laying hold and pulling the checkrein the throttler will be drawn upward closely against Y the throat of the animal so as to throttle or choke him more or less. The loops of the hangers of the throttler after having caused the hangers to so draw upward thethrottler will admit the checkrein to be used as a driving rein to guide the horse or stop him by the bit. By means of the thro ttler and its hangers, loop, and check-rein arranged and combined with the head-stall and its bit as set forth, a horse, While running away, may be throttled, guided, and checked, and in being throttled he will inevitably succumb by reason of the impediment thus produced to free respiration.

The hangers may be without the loops, and be connected directly to the check-rein or be in one piece therewith, and may be run through the bitrings or rings or pulleys applied thereto, but in this case there would be great danger of doing injury to the horse by throttling him too severely;

and, besides, it would be diflicult to guide him by the bit by means of the check-rein.

In the drawing the bit is shown at k.

If desirable the check-rein may be run through loops 1 extended from the bridle-rein.

I claim as my invention the following, viz. l

1. The throttle A, substantially as described, for use as set forth.

2. Thecombination of the throttler A, its hangers s, loops 0, and check-rein h with the headstall B and bit k, all being applied and arranged together substantially in manner and to operate as and forthe purpose as specified.
