To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, MAX SANDT, a subject of the German Emperor, residing at' Bielefeld, Germany, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Zigzag- Embroidery-Sewing Machines, of which the following is a specification.
The present -invention relates to zigzag embroidery sewing machines and particularly to an arrangement whereby embroidery designs of any desired shape and size can be produced. Zigzag embroidery sewing machines for the embroidering of different figures are already known, but they have the drawback that .only certain figures can be produced thereby by turning the fabric around a guide pin adjustably arranged on the presser finger or the stitch plate. Mostly onl certain partable figures can be produced on such machines and the proper assembling of the parts depends on the skill of the operator.
The object of this invention is to obviate these drawbacks and to enable the produc tion either on perforated or whole fabric of all kinds of embroidery designs, as circular, star-shaped, rectilinear, etc., according to the pattern.
This I accomplish by providing on the stitch plate or on the cloth bed of an embroidery sewing machine having a variable needle oscillation stroke a guide in which diverse exchangeable patterns constituting the original of the design to be embroidered are caused to slide by a tracing roller or the like. The fabric to be embroidered upon and stretched in a fabric frame is connected with the patterns in such a manner, as to and in which similar reference characters denote corresponding parts, Figure 1 being a top plan view of a stitch plate equipped with my new device; Fig. 2 a cross section through line AB of Fig. 1; Figs. 38 show different pattern disks.
Referring specifically to the drawings, 1 denotes the cloth plate' or bed of the sewmg machine on which in well known manner the stitch plate 2 is arranged. The latter has an oblong stitch opening 3, in which the needle 3 is adapted to oscillate. In the groove 4: of the bed is also mounted a' slide 6 actuated by a spring 5 (Fig. 1) and capable of moving in the direction of the swmglng movement of the needle. This slide 1n turn is provided with an annular groove 7, 7 to receive a pattern disk 8. The latter is guided in the groove 7 7 of the slide by an annular rim 9 which is equipped with upwardly projecting pins 9 or other suitable means, whereby the pattern and the fabric are connected andcaused to move in unison. Arranged in the stitch plate 2 is also a guiding roller 10 or the like which can be ad 1ustedby means of a set screw 11, lever 12 and bell crank 13. The presser foot (not shown) is ring-shaped, so that when it is pressed down onto the fabric it will expose the part which is being embroidered and enable the operator to watch the work.
For certain designs of pattern holes, as for example, oval, pointed, square, etc., a hole must be previously cut in the fabric corresponding in shape with that of the design to be embroidered and in that case the fabric must be placed in a certain position relative to the pattern in which position the work must be begun and stopped. To this end the pattern is provided with a groove 37 into which an arm 38 having a nose 40 and acted upon by a spring 39 is adapted to automatically engage when the pattern has completed a full rotation, looking the pattern. In cases where such pattern locking device is not required the lever 38 by suitable means can'be locked in a position in which its nose 40 will be out of contact with the pattern.
The mode of operation is as follows: The pattern 8 is placed into the groove 7, 7 of the slide 6. By its spring 5 the slide is drawn toward the guiding roller 10 so that while the pattern is moved past the guiding LII roller its edge will yieldingly engage the latter. The fabric stretched in the fabric frame (not shown) is slipped over the pins 9 of'the pattern, and is pressed down toward the stitch plate by the presserfoot. The width of the stitch having been fixed, the machine is set at work. ric frame and the fabric stretched therein are turned, the pattern 8 will be caused by the roller 10' to execute movements according to its configuration which movements the fabric will follow and'whereby the corresponding design will beproduced.
If it is desired to produce bythe pattern a larger design the guiding roller 10 by the set screw 11 is adjusted to be nearer the piercing center of the needle. On the other hand, if by the same pattern a considerably smaller figure is to be produced, the roller 10 is moved more'outwardly, so that the center of the pattern and the center of the swinging movement of the needle approach each other. 7 I

If the pattern is provided with the groove 37 (F ig. 2) the arm 38 is causedby 1ts spring 39 to engage with its nose 40 lntothe said groove and arrest the pattern each tlme the pattern completes a revolution and the groove of the pattern arrives opposite the nose 4:0. The arrest of the pattern indicates to the operator that he has to stop the work at that point.
It is obvious that to renew the'work, the operator must withdraw the nose 40 of the lever 38 from the recess 37 which may be accomplished by depressing the lever 38 by any suitable means, as a treadle operated link 38 or the like.
In Fig. 1 a pattern of the configuration shown in Fig. 5 has been placed. But it s obvious that any other pattern such as those shown in Figs. 8, 4, 6, 7 or 8 or others may be used.
What I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, a device for producing embroidery deslgns, comprising a pattern adapted to carry the fabric and a guiding lever in contact with said pattern, both, said pattern and said lever being adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation, and said lever being adapted during the rotation of said pattern to cause the latter to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.

3. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine,
having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, a-
device for producing embroidery designs, comprising a pattern having a recess and adapted to carry the fabric, means adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern and an automatic locking member adapted to engage the recess in said pattern and to arrest the latter in its initial position at the end of the work.
4. In a zigzag embroidery sewingmachine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, a device for producing embroidery designs, comprising a pattern having a recess and adapted to carry the fabric, means adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern and a spring actuated nose adapted to engage the recess in said pattern and to arrest the latter in its initial position at the end of the work.
5. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, a device for producing embroidery designs, comprising a pattern having a recess and adapted to carry the fabric, means whereby during the movement of the pattern the latter and the fabric are caused to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern, a spring actuated nose adapted to engage the recess in said pattern and to arrest the latter in its initial position at the end of the work, and means for releasing said pattern at the commencement of the Work.
6. In a ,zigzag embroidery sewing ma-' chine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, the combination with a bed plate, of a pattern adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and adapted to carry the fabric, guiding means on said bed plate to guide said pattern and means on said bed plate adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.
7. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, the combination with a .bed plate, of a pattern adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and adapted to carry the fabric, movable guiding means on said bed plate to guide said pattern and means on said bed plate adjustable in the direction 1,220,994 all of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.
8. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, the combination with a bed plate, of a stitch plate in said bed plate, a slide guided in said stitch plate, a pattern adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and rotatively mounted in said slideand adapted to carry the fabric and means adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.
9. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, the combination with a bed plate, of a stitch plate in the latter, a slide guided in said stitch plate, a pattern adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and rotatively mounted in said slide and adapted to carry the fabric and means adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.
10. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, the combination with a bed plate, of a stitch plate therein, a slide in said stitch plate capable of moving in the direction of the needle oscillation, a pattern adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and rotativelv mounted in said slide and adapted to carry the fabric and means adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.
11. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, the combination With a bed plate, of a stitch plate therein, a slide in said stitch plate capable of moving in the direction of the needle oscillation, a pattern disk adjustable in the direction of the needle-oscillation and rotatively mounted in said slide and having means for the attachment of the fabric thereto and means adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and which during the rotation of the pattern causes the latter and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.
12. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, the combination with a bed plate, of a stitch plate therein, a slide in said stitch plate capable of moving in the direction of the needle oscillation, a pattern disk adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and rotativelv mounted in said slide and having means for the attachment of the fabric thereto and a guiding member adjustable in the direction of the needle oscillation and adapted to contact with the said pattern and during the movement of the latter to cause it and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern.
13. In a zigzag embroidery sewing machine, having a lateral needle oscillation stroke, "the combination with a bed plate, of a stitch plate therein, a slide in said stitch plate capable of moving in the direction of the needle oscillation, a pattern disk rotatively mounted in said slide and having means for the attachment of the fabric thereto, a guiding memberadapted to contact with the said pattern and during the movement of the latter to cause it and the fabric to describe a figure corresponding with the configuration of said pattern and means for adjusting the position of the member laterally relative to the needle.
