To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, ROBERT F. MCGUIRE, acitizen of the United States, residing at Grand Forks, in the county of Grand Forks and State of North Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Bundle Carrier and Shocker Attachments; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to new and useful improvements in bundle carrier and shocker attachments and more particularly to that class adapted to be connected to a selfbinder or similar harvesting machine, and my object is to provide means for catching the bundle or sheaf while in a horizontal position and depositing the same upon a platform in a vertical position.
A further object is to provide a dumping rack or carriage for the reception of a number of bundles.
A further object is to provide means for conveying the bundles in an upright position from the platform to the dumping rack.
A further object is to provide means for raising and lowering the dumping rack to deposit the bundles collected thereon upon the ground and in the form of a shock.
A further object is to provide means for causing the bundles to pass upon opposite sides of the center of the dumping rack.
A further object is to provide means for controlling the action of the dumping rack.
And a further object is to provide means for holding the bundles from off the platform while the dumping rack is in lowered position.
Other objects and advantages will be hereinafter set forth and more particularly pointed out in the accompanying specification.

Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view showing the device for lowering the bundle on to the platform from a horizontal to a vertical position.

Referring to the drawings in which similar reference numerals designate corresponding parts throughout the several views, 1 indicates the frame of a binder which may be constructed in the usual or any preferred manner, 2 indicates the elevator canvas employed for conveying the cut grain to the usual form of binding device (not shown) and 3 indicates a seat attached to the frame and preferably in the rear thereof.
Attached to the frame 1 in any suitable manner is a platform 4:, said platform being arranged below the point of discharge of the bundles or grain from the binder, said platform having rollers 5 and 6 mounted thereon and arranged in pairs around which travel belts 7 and 8 respectively, said belts being employed for conveying the bundles 9 to the rear of the platform f and depositing the same upon a dumping rack 10.
The rollers 5 and 6 are rotated by extending the shafts 11 and 12 thereof downwardly through the platform 4 and attaching thereto bevel gears 18 and 14 respectively, said bevel gears in turn meshing with similar gears 15 and 16, of a driving shaft 17, one end of the driving shaft having a cog wheel 18 attached thereto which meshes with a similar cog wheel 19 carried by the driving wheel 20 so that when the machine is moved forwardly the rollers 5 and 6 and belts attached thereto will be operated.
As the bundles or sheaves are discharged from the binder in a horizontal position and as it is desired to enter the bundles into engagement with the belts 7 and 8 in a vertical position, I provide means for lowering the bundles from the binders to the of; the, binder, said bar having .a vertical arm 23 near one end thereof which terminates in. an angular extension 24 extending paralle'l' withthe bar 21 and spaced a sufficient distance therefrom to permit 7 the bundle to p'as'sbetween said extension and'bar. In order to retain'the bundle in engagement with the frame formed by the bar"21, arm 28 and extension '24, fingers '25 are extended outwardly at right angles toithe bar 21, one of the fingers being at the forward end of the bar 21 while. the opposite finger is at or near the pivotal I oint of the bar said fin ers formin a rest 7 said belt deposited upon the dumping rack.
.As the major portion of the weight of the bundle rests upon the finger 25at the end of the bar 21, said weight will causethe bar to swingonitspi vot, thereby disposing the bundlefromahorizontal to a vertical po sition, and in order to return the bar and parts secured theretoto .its initial position for thereception of the next'succeeding bundle the end of the bar opposite the finger 25 is bent at right angles to the bar to form an extension .27 upon which is adjustably V anounted a'counter weight 28, said weight being held, in its adjusted position by means of a binding screw 29 and it will be readily seen that as'soon as the weight of the bundle is released from the frame structure, the counter weight Wlll immediatelyv return said 7 I 7 frame to its initial position.

sume positions adjacent the side plates 31 and in separated relation, a bundle passing alternately on opposite sides of the guide frame and by having the bundles spaced apart when deposited upon the ground they will lean toward each other and remain in an upright position. The bundles are caused to travel on opposite sides of the guide and guide frame by the bundles themselves, it being understood that after the first bundle has been deposited upon the head plate 30 the'guide 34 will cause the same to pass to one or the other side of the dumping rack so that when the next succeeding bundle oncount'ersthe bundle already deposited, it will follow the course of least resistance and travel to the opposite side of the guide. The
next succeeding bundle will force one of the bundles resting on the head plate farther on to the dumping rack, thus placing two bundles on one side and one upon the other,
whereby when the next succeeding bundle is delivered to the dumping rack, it will pass to the side of the frame of the rack ha\' ing. the single bundle thereon and so on until the required number of bundles have been deposited upon the dumping rack.
The rack 10 is supported between frame bars 36 by means of hangers 37, the upper ends of which are provided with lateral oxtensions 38,,the-free ends thereof terminating in eyes 39 for engagement with links 40, while the lower ends thereof are pivot-ally secured to brackets 41. fixed to the flanges 39. The links 40 are engaged with supporting rods 42,.the rear ends of which are pivot ally attached to the upper ends of standards 43 while the opposite ends thereof are pivotally attached to the arms 44 of a crank shaft 45, said crank shaft being pivotally attached to the platform 4, and it will be readily seen that when the crank shaft is rotated the arms 44 areswung in the arc of a circle rearwardly or forwardly as are also the standards 43. thereby lowering or raising the dumping rack.
The crank shaft 45 is held under control in any preferred manner, preferably by means of a foot lever 46, oneend of which is pivoted to one of the arms 44 while the opposite end thereof is provided with a fork 47 against which the foot of the driver is to be .placed to hold the foot lever against movement. The forkend of the foot lever is brought into convenient reach of the driver by disposing the shank of the lever through a socket 48 which socket is carried bya: bracket 49 extending outwardly from After the prescribed number of bundles have beendeposited upon the dumping rack .10 the driver releases his, foot from the fork 47 whereupon the weight of the bundles will cause the arms 44 and standards 43 to swing rearwardly, thereby lowering the dumping rack until the bundles engage the earth.
As soon as the weight of the bundles has conjunction, said dumping rack being held in its elevated position by the pressure of the foot until such time as it is again desired to discharge the bundles therefrom.
In order to prevent the bundles from passing into the path of the lowering frame when said frame is in tilted position or from entering said frame when the dumping rack is lowered, a shaft 51 is extended across the binder frame adjacent the bundle discharging point thereof, said shaft having retaining fingers 52 thereon which normally rest in the path of the bundle while discharging from the binder, one end of the shaft 51 having a crank 53 which may be grasped and the shaft held against rotation to retain the fingers 52 in the path of the bundle but said fingers will freely swing out of the path of the bundles under ordinary circumstances.
This device can be attached to any suitable form of harvester or binder as the operation thereof is entirely separate from the operation of the binder and in view of the simplicity of the device, it can be readily manufactured and attached 'to the binder at a minimum expense.
Having thus fully described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States, is
1. In a bundle carrier and shocker of the class described, the combination with a harvester, of a platform, and a pivotally mounted frame member adapted to receive the bundle from the harvester and deposit the same upon the platform in an upright position, said frame member consisting of spaced supporting fingers, spaced guide fingers, and means, for pivotally supporting said fingers whereby they can be automatically rocked from a horizontal to a vertical position by the weight of the bundle.
2. In a bundle carrier and shocker of the class described, the combination with a binder, of a platform, and a pivotally mounted frame member adapted to receive the bundle from the binder and deposit the same upon the platform in an upright position, said frame member consisting of spaced supporting fingers, spaced guide fingers, disposed above and in fixed relation to the supporting fingers, means for pivotally supportin said fingers, and a weight attached to the frame member to automatically return the frame to normal position after arighting the bundle on the platform.
3. In a bundle carrier and shocker of the class described, the combination with a binder, of a platform, and a pivotally mounted frame member adapted toreceive the bundle from the binder, and deposit the same upon the platform in an upright position, said frame member consisting of a finger bar pivotally supported intermediate its ends upon theplatform, an angular arm extending from one end of said bar, a weight adjustable thereon, bundle supporting fingers fixed upon the opposite end of the said bar, an additional finger bar fixed to and disposed above in spaced relation to the first mentioned finger bar, and guide fingers extending from the additional finger bar above the supporting fingers in spaced relation thereto.
