To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, SAMUEL W. Lnwis, a citizen of the United States, residing at Tip Top, in the county of Hardin and State of Kentucky, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Agitating Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in agitating devices, the essence of the invention lying in the provision of operating means so arranged as to enable the actuation of the agitating element by the manipulation of only one hand of the operator while leaving the other hand free to hold the article with which said agitating element is designed to cooperate.
One of the particular features of my device is the provision for detachment of the agitating element so that the invention may be used for different purposes such for eX- ample as an egg beater, a cleaning device for lamp chimneys, a bottle washer, etc., as determined by the character of agitating element attached.
For a full understanding of the present invention, reference is to be had to the following description and the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of a device constructed in accordance with my invention.

Throughout the following detail description, and on the several figures of the drawing, similar parts are referred to by like reference characters.
Referring to the drawing, and specifically describing my invention 1 and 2 designate the shank or stem and head or cross piece respectively of a handle member upon the said shank of which is mounted for recipro cation a grip piece 3 provided at its ends with finger loops or openings 4. Interposed between this grip piece and the head 2 is a spring 5 which normally holds said grip piece in spaced relation to the head. The lower end portion of the shank 1 is received in a sleeve 6, to the lower extremity of which a revoluble chuck 7 is rotatably connected. to the sleeve 6 at 10 meshes. Depending from the grip piece 3 is a vertically disposed rack 11 which engages the pinion 9 and is held in proper relation to thispinion by means of the apertured arm 12 which projects laterally from the sleeve 6, said arm 7 constituting a guide for this rack as will be obvious. It may be stated that the sleeve 6 is fixed to the shank 1 in any desired manner, as, for example, by the pin 13 so that in the assembling of the parts of the device the attachment of said parts may be accomplished preliminary to the introduction of the shank into this sleeve member. To the rotatable chuck 7 any desired form of agitating element is susceptible of attachment and in the drawing a brush 14 is illustrated, provided with a shank 15 having a notched upper extremity for engagement by the spring actuated pawl 16 mounted upon the chuck.
It will be obvious to those acquainted with devices of this character that other forms of agitating members may be used instead of the brush 14 depending, of course, upon what operation is desired to be performed. It need only be observed that the article hereinbefore described is particularly useful in revolving an agitating member by using just one hand for manipulating the device. This as hereinbefore premised permits the object to be cleaned to be held in the other hand while the cleaning operation is accomplished by squeezing the hand carrying the device together soas to bring the grip piece 3 toward the head 2 against the tension ofthe spring 5, which latter upon release of the grip actuates the grip piece to return it to normal position against the upper extremity of the sleeve 6, which forms a stop to limit its reciprocation.
The rotation of the brush or agitating element may be easily accomplished in this manner and the detachment of the agitating element is particularly convenient to enable it to be easily cleaned.
I am aware that in certain types of clevices, the manipulation of the member to cause rotation of a certain element may be accomplished by manipulating the device with one hand but in such devices it is generally required that the device be pressed against some object so as to enable the actuating means to produce the rotating action. 1
It will be apparent that in the present invention thls is not necessary and hence a much more desirable arrangement is provided. 7
Having thus described my invention, What I claim as new is:
1. In an agitating device of the class described, the combination of a handle including a shank, a grip piece surrounding the sameand mounted for reciprocation up and down on said shank, a rotatable member revolubly connected to the shank, and an operative connection intermediate said grip ,tuated grip piece mounted about the shank,
a guide member carried by said shank, a rotatable element revolubly connected to said guide member, and a rack extending longitudinally of the shank and 'operatively connected to the rotatable member for actu- 'copies of this patent may be obtained for ating the latter upon. reciprocation of the grip piece.
