EXPANSION-BOLT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 2'7, 1917.
Original application filed. November 19, 1915, Serial No. 62,413. Divided and this application filed May 1,
- 1916. Serial 110.9454? To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, TowNsoN HAND, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of New Haven, in the county of New Haven and State of Connecticut, have invented an Improvement in Expansion-Bolts, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is an improvement in bolts employed in connection with railroad frogs and has particular reference to a divlsion of application Serial No. 62,418, filed November 19, 1915.
An object of the invention is the provision of a bolt consisting of a main section, and end sections connected thereto in a novel manner whereby said end sections are adjusted laterally relative to the main section when the bolt is being fastened so that said end sections will bind against the wall of the bolt opening and thus securely retain said bolt in looking position.
A further object is to provide a bolt of this character which is simple in construction, easy to manufacture, and effective in carrying out the purpose for which it is designed.
The inventive idea involved is capable of receiving a variety of mechanical expressions, one of which, for the purpose of illustrating the invention, is shown in the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 is a side elevation of the bolt in looking position and constructed in accordance with the invention.
Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the parts detached.
Fig. 3 is a partial section showing the manner of interlocking one of the end sections with the main section of the bolt.
Fig. 4 is a detail perspective view of the interlocking joint between one end of the main seam and one of the end sections.
There is shown in the drawing what is now believed to be a preferred form of the with an inclined surface 11, preferably machined, having extending laterally therefrom a locking element or lug 12 of substantially triangular formation and having an outer transverse surface 13 arranged at right angles to the longitudinal axis of said end section. The element 12 also has an inner inclined surface 14 which cooperates-with the inclined surface 11 to form the substantially V-shaped notch, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The opposite ends of the main section 5 of the bolt are inclined or beveled in opposite directions as indicated at 15 and each end is cut away to provide a lug receiving opening 16 of substantially the same formation as the locking element 12 and having an inclined or beveled surface 17 adapted to be engaged by the inclined surface 14 of the element 12.
T 0 look the bolt in position, the sections of the same are assembled and inserted into the bolt opening in any structure, such as a fish plate, with the head 10 contacting the surface thereof, and nut 9 then threaded upon the end 8 of the section 6. By tightening said nut, the inclined surfaces 14 and 17 will cause the end sections 6 and 7 and the main section 5 to have relative lateral movement in a diagonal direction, thus causing said sections to bind against the wall of the bolt opening. When the parts are first placed in position, a considerable space is left between the transverse surface of the locking element and the inner end 18 of the opening 16 in the main section. Mounted in said space is a wedge shaped key 19, which will, at all times, maintain the end section in proper position and prevent relative longitudinal movement between the same and the main section.
l/Vhat is claimed is:
1. A bolt of the character described comprising a main section and end sections of substantially the same diameter as said main section associated with said main section, and means for producing a relative lateral movement between said main and said end sections, whereby the sections of the bolt will bind in a bolt opening.
2. A. bolt of the character described comprising a main section having diagonal surfaces and end sections associated with said main section and also having diagonal surfaces engaging the first named surfaces, one of said end sections being adjustable relative to the main section whereby a lateral movement between said main and end sections in a diagonal direction is efi'ected to cause the'sections of the bolt to bind ma bolt opening. V
3. A locking bolt of the character described comprising a main section having oppositely beveled ends provided with openings, an end section associated with each end of the main section and having a beveled end adapted to cooperate with the beveled end of'said main section, a lug 'formed upon the beveled end of each of the end sections and adapted to engage the opening in the adjacent end of the main.
section, each lug and opening being pro vided with contacting beveled surfaces whereby to cause relative lateral movement between said main and end sections when the bolt is being secured in position.
4:. A locking bolt of the character described comprisinga main section having oppositely beveled ends provided with openings, an end section associated with each end "of the main section and having a beveled end adapted to coeperate with the V beveled end of said 'main section, a ing formed upon the beveled end of each of the end sections and adapted to engage the opening in the adjacent end of the inain section, each lug and "opening being provided with contacting beveled surfaces whereby to cause relativelateral movement between said main and end sections when .sociated therewith, said main and end sections having oppositely beveled contactin surfaces for producing opposite latera lllYeiDQlli; between said sections when the bolt is being locked in position.
0. A bolt of the character described comprising a main section, end sections associated therewith, said main and end sections having oppositely beveled contacting surfaces for producing opposite lateral movement between said sections when the bolt is locked in position, and keys adapted to be driven .into said main section for causing further co-action between said beveled surfaces.
7. A bolt of the character described, comprising a main section and end sections of substantially the same diameter as said main section associated therewith, and means for producing .a diagonal movement between said main and end sections whereby the sections of the bolt will bind in a bolt opening.
