HANDLE AND COVER-OPENING APPLIANCE FOR BOXIE Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented MarJZZ, 191%.
Application filed November 24, 1916. Serial No. 133,2 l5.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Rocco FABRIZIO, a citizen of the United States of America, and resident of Springfield, in the county of Hampden and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Handle and Cover-Opening Appliances for Boxes, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
This invention relates to an appliance to constitute both av handle and a cover opening device for a form of box for containing shoe blacking or polish, and the like, in which the box and cover are telescopically engaged and in which both the box and cover are provided with surrounding outwardly extended flanges which, when the parts are engaged, are spaced one from another.
This somewhat popular form of box, having extensive use especially as a container for shoe blackings and polishes, is diflicult of opening; and the object of this invention is to provide a. device to be combined with and iorm a permanent attachment of the box, and which is operable to easily and readily force the'cover oil from the box and to serve as a handle for the box; and in the utilization of the device it is operated to remove the cover and precludes liability of the hand of the operator becoming smooched or soiled by the contents of the box.
The invention is described in conjunction with the accompanying drawings and is set forth in the claim.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a plan view showing a blacking box and the present improved appliance combined therewith, the cover of the box being removed.
- Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the covered box and of the present appliance. I
Fig. 3 is a cross sectional view as taken on line 33 of Fig. 2. i
In the drawings, A represents the box and B its cover, the latter being constructed to telescopically engage the mouth portion of the box in a most usual manner.
The box has a surrounding outwardly extending flange or, below its circular cover engaging portion Z), and the cover, B has a similar outwardly extending circular flange d at a slight distance above its lower edgeso that when the coveris properly in place thet'wo flanges will be parallel and in separationas shown in Fig. 2. 3
The new appliance, combined with and to form a permanent attachment to the box, embodies a frame 0 composed of a length of comparatively heavy, yet more or. less resilient, wire, having the intermediate portion thereof bent around in excess of a semicircle, which portion is adapted to embrace the box and to have the cross sectionally inwardly convergent portions thereof engage between the said flanges a and (Z of the box and cover, as more particularly shown in Fig. 3.
T he said frame, moreover, has outwardly divergent arms f f extended from the ap proaching parts of the box encircling portion which constitute a handle for the appliance, and which when grasped and pressed together are effective for constricting the partially circular box embracing portion.
F represents a skeletonframe composed of sheet metal resilient members having connections at various points with the said box encircling portion of the wire frame extending with downward and inward inolinations across the sides of the box and continued under the box, and having such box underlying portion secured to the bottom of the box as by rivet g.
As shown, the skeleton frame is composed of a transverse strip lb connected with and extended from the opposite'lateral sides of the circular portion of the frame, and a strip 2' at right angles to the transverse strip h, the upturned end portions of these strips being soldered or otherwise secured or engaged with the box embracing frame portion.
The one rivet 9 serves to connect the strips comprised in the skeleton frame and 0 secure such frame to the bottom of the The skeleton frame composed of very thin sheet metal is of resilient character and does not obstruct the constrictive and expanding action of the frame.
The appliance having the parts in the relations especially represented in Fig. 3, is
operable when the handles are pressed together to cause the constriction of the box embracing portion of the frame so that the inwardly inclined or rounded portions thereof will, in the manner of a wedge or cam resisted by the lower flange and exerting a prying action on the upper flange, force the cover ofi from its engagement with the box.
In order to increase the efiectiveness oi the frame in relation to the flanges of the box and cover, such portions are rendered of a V or wedge shape'as by filing, forging or stamping, as represented in Fig. 3.
Formerly when the cover of the box has been pried ofi at the expense of considerable trouble, there hasbeen liability that the hand would come upon the blacking in the box and become soiled thereby, but by the provision and employment of the present appliance, the hand supports the box through the handle provided frame which constitutes a holder for the box when the blacking or polish is being used, as well as a cover opening means.
The combination with a box, and its cover constructed to telescopically engage the mouth portion of the box, the box having a surrounding outwardly extending flange below the 'cover engaging portion and the cover, having a similar flange above its box engaging portion, of a frame composed of a length of comparatively heavy, but resilient wire having the intermediate portion thereof bent around in excess of a semicircle, adapted to embrace the box, nd to have the cross sectionally' inwardly convergent ,portions thereof engaged between the said flanges of the box and cover, and said frame having divergently outwardly extending arms for the construction of the box cncirclingportion of the frame, and a skeleton frame composed of sheet metal resilient members havin connections atvari- I ous points with said box encircling portion of the frame, and extending downwardly across the sides of. and undei: the box, and having the box underlying portion of such frame riveted to the bottom of the box.
Signed by me at Springfield, Mass, in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
