W f l UNITED STATES PATENT QFFIGE.
WILLIAM H. SPARKS, OF ABSEdOM, ASSIGNOR TO HIMSELF AND JAMES D. SOUDER, OF WILLIAMSTOWN, NEW JERSEY.
IMPROVEMENT IN AXLES FOR VEHICLES.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 122,074, dated December 19, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. SPARKS, of Absecom, in the county of Atlantic and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Axles; and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification.
My invention consists, in combination with each end of the axle and hub-box in connection therewith, ot' a removable sleeve, the eye of which at its inner end has a conical enlargement, to which the end of the axle corresponds, whereby its strength is greatly increased, as hereinafter described.
Figure 1 is a longitudinal section of the end of the improved axle A. Fig. 2 is a side view of the sleeve 0. Fig. 3 is an end view of the same. Fig. 4 is a side view of one end of the axle A. Fig. 5 is an end view of the same.
Like letters in all the figures indicate the same parts.
A is one end of the axle. B is a projection,
which fits in a corresponding hole, a, of the sleeve 0, which forms the journal. D is the journal-box, which is inserted in the hub of the Wheel in the usual manner. The longitudinal hole a of the sleeve 0, at its inner end, terminates with a conical part, a, in the enlargement O, of octagon form. The main portion of the hole a is slightly conical to admit of a tight fit on the projection B when drawn inward by means of the screw-nut E on the end of the latter, the part a also being brought tight on the conical part B of the axle, whereby the strength of the axle is much increased, as the whole strain is brought to the inner extremity of the sleeve at X, where the area of the part B is much enlarged over the part B. The box D is held between the nut E on the end projection B of the axle and the enlargement C of the sleeve 0, having an easy tit on the latter. The friction on the ends of the box is reduced by means of the washers (1- d.
I claim as my invention- The conical enlargement B at each end of the axle A, in combination with the enlargement O of the sleeve 0, for increasing the strength of the diminished parts B of the axle, substantially as described.
WILLIAM H. SPARKS.
