Description

1. R. BEERY.
MARKING STAKE.
APPLICATION man :une 9,1915.
l ,QQ 1L .1. Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
JOHN R. BEERY, OF CELINA, OHIO.
MARKINGSTAKE.
Application filed J' une 9, 1915.
T0 all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that lf, JOHN R. BERRY, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of the city of Celina, county of Mercer, and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Marking- .Stakesj of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in marking stakes designed for use particularly in plowing, fence building, seeding, etc., and has for its object the production of a stake of this character which will be of durable and economical construction and efficient in use.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
The invention consists in the combinations and arrangements of parts hereinafter described and claimed.
The invention will be best understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
, Figure l is a front elevation of a. marking stake embodying theinuvention,
Fig. 2 is a side elevation thereof, and
Fig. 8 is a section taken on line of Fig. l.
The preferred form of construction, as illustrated in the drawing, comprises an elongated Wooden body l which is square in cross section. The lower end 2 of said body is pointed to adapt the same to pierce the ground, and said end is reduced in order to form a shoulder 3 adapted to serve as a stop to limit insertion into the ground, as will be readily understood.
Arranged at the upper end of the body 1 are designating plates 4 positioned one above the other with their faces disposed at right angles to each other, said plates being secured to the stake body bymeans of a metallic strap 5. The ends of said strap are secured to opposite sides of the stake body by securing devices 6, the central portion of lsaid strap projecting upwardly from the stake and being formed to snugly embrace the plates 4, as clearly shown in Figs. l and 2. Securing devices 7 project through said plates and the opposite sides of strap 5 for securely locking the plates to said strap. l
Arranged upon the body l, intermediate the ends thereof, are handles 8 formed of a single piece of wire securedto the stake body by means of wire fastening members Specification of Letters Patent.
rammen Mar. et', ieri'. Serial No. 33,201.
9 which engage loops or eyes 10 formed in the opposite sides of the wire from which the handles 8 are formed. The handles thus provided at opposite sides of the stake afford ready means for carrying or transporting the same.
Provided at the lower end of the stake body is an eye l1 to which the marking or measuring rope or cord 12, used in conjunction with the stake, is fastened, as clearly shown in Fig. 2.
A stake of the construction set forth is simple and economical in construction and hence may be manufactured at a lou7 cost, and the same is adapted to effectually serve in any connection where a marking stake may be used, as for instance in plowing, fence building, sowing seed, or surveying. The plates 4 may be painted diiferent col ors or upon the same may be placed directions or indications appropriate to the use to which the stake is to be put. For eX- ample, in surveying, the lines intersecting at the point where the stake is arranged may be indicated upon the plates 4 to temporarily designate the same until permanent markings might be installed.
While I have illustrated and described the preferred form of construction for carrying my invention into effect, this is capable of variation and modification without departing from the spirit of the invention. I, therefore, do not wish to be limited to the precise details of construction set forth, but desire to avail myself of such variations and modifications as come within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A marking stake comprising a body; designation plates arranged one above the other at the upper end of said body and disposed angularly relative to each other; and a strap having its ends secured to said body and having its central portion projecting upwardly from said body and formed to embrace said plates to securely fasten the same to said body, substantially as described.
2. A marking stake comprising a body; designation plates arranged one above the other at the upper end of said body and disposed angularly relative to each other; a strap having its ends secured to said body and having its central portion projecting adapted to be upwardly from said body and formed to embrace said plates; and means passing through said plates and the opposite sides of said strap for locking said plates to said strap, substantially as described.
3. A marking stake comprising a body; a vertically disposed designation plate having its lower edge resting upon the upper end of said body; and means for fastening said plate to said body, said means coinprising a strap having its ends engaging against opposite sides of said body and fastened thereto and having its central portion projecting upwardly and embracing said plate, substantially as described.
4. A. marking stake comprising a body; a vertically disposed designation plate having its lower edge resting upon the upper end of said body; means for fastening said plate to said body, said means comprising a strap having its ends engaging against opposite sides of said body and fastened thereto and having its central portion .projecting upwardly and embracing said plate; and means passing through said plate and the opposite sides of said strap for locking the parts together, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof I have signed lny name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
