JOZO RASTIJA, OF EAST AKRON, OHIO.
CHAIR FOR SHIPS.
Application filed December 14, 1916.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Jozo RASTIJA, a subject of the Emperor of Austria-Hungary, residing at East Akron, in the county of Summit and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Chairs for Ships, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in chairs for ships.
The primary object of the invention is the provision of a chair that is easy and inexpensive to manufacture adaptable for use upon shipboard,'the same being provided with automatic balancing means for maintaining the occupant support of the chair normally horizontal.
A further object of the invention is the provision of a ships chair having automatic balancing means and connections between the and arrangement of fully described,
balancing means and the seat of the chair constituting the supporting means for the latter.
A still further object of the device is the provision of a chair adapted for use upon ships so arranged thatthe chair seat is maintained constantly horizontal, the seat being mounted upon equilibrating members ar ranged adjacent the four sides of the chair.
With these general objects in view and others that will appear as the nature of the invention is better understood, the same consists in the novel construction, combination parts hereinafter more illustrated in the accompanying drawing, and then claimed.
In the drawing forming a part of this application and in which like designating characters refer to corresponding parts throughout the several views Figure 1 is a front elevation of the device.
Fig. 2 is a similar View thereof showing its arrangement when the deck of the vessel is inclined.
Fig. 3 is a top plan view of the same.
Figs. 4 and 5 are horizontal transverse sectional views taken upon lines IVIV and VV respectively, of Fig. 1, and,
Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one of the pendulum members detached.
The present device broadly consists of a chair 10 supported in such a manner from the deck 11 of a vessel that the bottom or seat 12 of the chair is constantly maintained horizontal, the said chair having any desirable form of back 13 and side arms 14.
Specification of Letters Patent.
' weights 19, the
Patented Mar. 27, 1917. Serial No. 136,965.
Each of the pendulum or equilibrating members 18 consists of a heavy weight 19 having a supporting shaft 20 secured thereabove in parallelism therewith by means of a plurality of connecting bars 21. Trunnioning rods 22 are secured to the posts 15 projecting toward the adjacently arranged posts with their free ends journaled within sockets 23 in the opposite ends of the shafts 20, the arrangement being such that the shafts 20 are thereby journaled in parallelism beneath the rollers 16 whereby a swinging weight 19 will be arranged between each pair of the posts 15.
A slightly curved connecting rod 24 is arranged between each of the four sides of the chair bottom 12 and the oppositely positioned pendulum 18, said rods 24 being secured at their upper ends centrally as at 25 to the edges of said bottom 12 and with their lower ends pivoted as at 26 to suitable lugs 27 arranged upon the inner sides of the weights 19.
The said connecting rods 24 are slightly curved and are supported intermediate their ends by the grooved pulleys 17 within the grooves of which they are retained by means of staples 28 secured to the roller 16 overlying the said wheels 17 and connecting rods 24. Connectors 29 are arranged normally horizontal between the oppositely positioned said connectors being pivoted to lugs 30 carried by the inner faces of the said weights whereby the opposite pendulums are synchronized.
The connecting rods 24 may be slightly resilient if desired, thereby resiliently mounting the chair 10, it being noted that the said chair is entirely supported by the said connecting rods 24 having no direct contact with the posts 15.
The operation of the device will be best understood by considering Figs. 1 and 2 of the drawings, the normal position of the elements being shown in Fig. 1 when the deck 11 is horizontal. During a storm, or whenever the deck 11 becomes trated in Fig. 2, the pairs of oppositelypositioned weights 19 will maintain their respective pendulums vertical which by reason of the connecting rods 24 maintains the chair seat 12 horizontal, the grooved wheels 17 moving slightly upon the said connecting rods during the shifting movement of the deck 11. By this arrangement the chair 10 will be maintained horizontal during the tilting of the deck 11 whether sidewise or forwardly and rearwardly of the chair, the device being preferably positioned with any one of the sides of the bottom 12 parallel with the longitudinal axis of the ship.
A serviceable chair is arranged providing a comfortable seat for the occupant preventing the chair from swinging with the ship and assisting to prevent sea-sickness.
What I claim as new is 1. A ships chair comprising a seat, a plurality of pendulums carried by the ship, grooved wheels mounted adjacent the pendulums and supporting rods for the seat passing over said wheels connecting the Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the tilted as illusouter sides of the seat with the oppositelyarranged pendulums.
2. A chair for ships comprising uprights, rollers journaled between said uprights, pendulums journaled beneath the said rollers, connectors between opposite ones of said pendulums, grooved wheels centrally secured to said rollers, a chair bottom, and resilient connecting rods passing over the said wheels and attached between said pendulums and the said seat at opposite sides of the device. 7 V
3. A device of the class described comprising in combination'with a deck, corner posts arranged thereon, a chair seat positioned above the said posts, pendulums arranged between adjacent ones of'said posts at each side of the device, grooved Wheels journaled centrally between adjacent ones of said posts above the said pendulums and connecting rods attached between said pendulums and the oppositely-positioned sides of said seat and passing over said grooved wheels. r
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
