Be it known that I, EDWIN D. CAssE ,-a citizen of the l nited States, residing. at Newark, in the county of Licking and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and use fal Improvements in Railroad-Rail-Engaging Devices, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in railroad rail engaging devices for spacing ties andforother purposes. The object of my invention is: First,-to provide a railengaging block of novel, simple and efficient construction; secondly, to' provide a novel bearing block associated with the rail engaging block, and, thirdly, to provide a pressure producinginstrument in combination with the rail-engaging block and the bearing block, all constructed, associated and combined in a novel manner to produce novel and advantageous results. Wlth these objects in view, my invention consists-in the novel construction and combinations of parts hereinafter fully described and particnlarlyclaimed. Y

Referring to the drawings, 2 designates av railengaging block adapted to extend transversely over a railroad rail 3. The block 2 has an opening 4 therein to receive the rail head 5, and the block 2 has an arm 7 which extends outwardly from the block in a direction transversely of" the rail 3, whereby when pressure is applied to the arm 7 in a direction longitudinally of the rail 3, the block 2 will be slightly canted in a horizontal direction, causing the side walls of the opening 4 therein to engage and firmly grip the rail; and the greater the A licat onmed May 4, 1916: Serial No. 95,293.

In these figures the rail engaging block 2 is shown engaged with one of the rails 3, one end of the jack 19 is shown engaged with the hearing block 12, and the other end of the jack 19 is shown engaged with one of the crooked ties 20 to be moved back into its proper position parallel to the ties 21. The jack 19 comprises a main body 22, a bar slidable in the body 22 and a hand o erated lever 24- I fulcrumed, at 25, in the b0 y 22 and carry- 12 and bears against its bearing] ing two pawls and 27 which are adapted to engage teeth on the bar 23 and move it outwardly from the body 22 when the lever 24 is moved back and forth on its fulcrum 25 in the usual manner common to well known jacks. The outer end of the bar 23 between the flanges 17 of the bearing block face '16 and the heel end 28 of the jack ody 19 is engaged withv the tie 20 to be straightened. When the parts are placed in this position and the lever 24: is operated to move the body 22 away from the head 35011 the bar 23, the block 2 will firmly grip the rail 3 and the heel end 28 of the jack 19 will move the crooked tie 20 back to its straight position.
In Fig. 3 of the drawings 1 have shown a pressure-producing member 29 comprising a body 30 in the form of a turn buckle and having right and left hand screws 31 screwed into the respective ends t ereof. The outer ends of the screws 31 are provided with suit able heads 32 which are inserted between the flanges 17 of two bearing blocks 12 which are carried by the arms 7 of two rail--enga ing blocks 2, as shown. These blocks 2 are placed on the two sections of a rail 3 on the respective sides of a joint\ 33 therein for the purpose of separating the sections of the rail 3 at the joint 33 when the turn buckle 29 is operated to separate the screws 31.
During this operation, a suitable bar is inserted into the openings 34 in the turn buckle 29 to turn it; and as it is turned to separate the screws 31, the flanges 17 engage the heads 32 and prevent the screws 31 from turning. As the screws 31 move apart, the blocks 2 are caused to grip and 1' aparate the two, sections of the rail 3. This separation of rail sections at the joint therebecomes necessary at times owing to the creeping of the rail under certain conditions or" the road bed and trafiic'.
I claim:
1. A rail-engaging block comprising a body portion adapted to extend transversely over a rail and having an opening therein to receive the rail head, and having an outwardlv' extending arm, and having feet adapted to bear upon the railbase, whereby when pressure is applied to said arm in a direction longitudinallyof the rail said body portion will be canted horizontally into gripping engagement with the rail, and the said feet will preventvertical canting of the a body portion.
2. A rail-engaging block comprising a body portion adapted to extend transversely over a rail and having an opening therein to receive the rail head, and having an outwardly extending arm, and having feet adapted to bear upon the rail base, said feet 7 extending outwardly longitudinally of the rail beyond positions beneath said body portion, whereby when pressure is applied to said arm in a direction longitudinally of the rail'said body'portion will be canted horizontally into gripping engagement With the rail, and the said feet will prevent Vertical canting of the body portion. r Y
3. A rail-engaging block having an outwardly extending arm and adapted to grip a rail when ressure is applied to said arm longitudinally of the rail, said arm having a socket therein, and a bearing block removably supported on said arm and having. an integral bearing part seated in said socket and removable therefrom with said bearing block when it is removed from said arm.
4. A raiLengaging block having an outwardly extending arm and adapted to grip a rail when pressure is applied to said am longitudinally of the rail, said arm having a socket therein, and a beating'block having a pair of flanges embracingsaid arm and supporting the bearing blOuk. thereon and permitting it to be removed therefrom, said 7 bearing block having an integral bearing part extending between its flanges and seated in said socket and removable therefrom with said bearing block when it is removed from said arm.
5. A rail-engaging block having an outwardly extending arm and adapted to grip a rail when pressure is applied to said arm longitudinally of the rail and a bearing block supported on said arm and having a face adapted to be engaged by a pressure instrument, said bearinggblock having a pair of outwardly extendin j flanges adapted to receive a part of a pressure instrument between them. 1 4
6. A rail-engaging block having an outwardly extendingarm and adapted to grip a rail whenpressure is applied to said arm longitudinally of the rail, and a bearing block supported on said arm and having a face adapted to be engaged by a, pressure insure instrument when placed between said flanges.
7. A rail-engaging block having an outwardly extending arm and adapted to grip a rail when pressure is applied to said armlongitudinally of the rail, and a bearing block supported on said arm and having a face adapted to be engaged by a pressure instrument, said bearing block having a pair of outwardly extending flanges adapted to receive a part of the pressure instrument between them, and said flanges having their free ends turned toward each other to prevent movement away from said face of a part of a pressure instrument placed between the flanges.
S. A bearing block having a pair of flanges extending from one side thereof and adapted to embrace a part to be acted upon by the block, and having a pair of flanges extending from another side thereof and adapted to embrace a part to act upon the block. v
9. A rail-engaging block having an out wardly extending arm and adapted to grip a rail when pressure is applied to said arm longitudinally of the rail, an adjustable bearing block supported on said arm, and a pressure producing instrument having one end engaging said bearing block and having its other end provided with means adapted to engage a railroad structure.
