To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, PERCY BLoUNT WAR- ING, a subject of the King of Great Britain, and resident of Warrington, in the county of Lancashire, England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Coin- Controlled 'Apparatus, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
The Vpresent invention relatesk to coin freed apparatus of the type having a plurality of chutes one or more of which are pivoted to deflect all except the last lcoin from the `main chute leading to the releasing mechanism. According to thepresent invention, the pivoted chutes are held in the inoperative position by the weight of the coin contained therein. In a 'preferred 'form the Vpivoted or auxiliary chutes end opposite an abutment, so that the coin slides down the chute, is stopped by the abutment, and is held there until the last coin has passed into the main chute. The coins are dropped into a collecting `chamber automatically, e. g., by a stop on the slide engaging a lever connected with the abutment by'a pin and slot or Vother suitable connection.V
The invention will now be described with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a general side internal eleva'- tion of the apparatus with the parts in their normal position. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the position of the parts when three coins have` been inserted, but before the delivery drawer has been slid out. 1

The articles for sale are stored in any suitable manner within a suitable casing 2 mounted upon a base 3, the said casing conshowingthe posithe delivery drawer taining a chamber'i for the peculiar mechanism which allows one of the articles, or packet of articles, to beV delivered'to the buyer, when three coins have been inserted into the machine, and also a coin chamber 5. i The front of the casing has a money receiving slot 7, and a goods delivery tray 8 with an upstanding flange at its front edge. A slide 9 is provided with a handle 10, by which it can be moved in and out, and the front of the casing 2 has an aperture large enough to allow for the passage of the slide 9. These supplementary chutes are superimposed above the main chute, and they are pivoted at 16", 17", so that when a coin entering the chute 16 has passed the Vpivot 16X and comes against the abutment 1S, the weight of the coin will tilt thesaid chute 16, thus lifting its forward. end, and" leavingl the chute 17 only resting against the main chute 15. This enables the next coin to enter the chute 17 which in like Vmanner tilts when the coin has passed the the forward end of that to the third coin pivot 17", and comes against the abutment 18 thus lift-ing '10o dropped through the coin slot 7 passingv Y down the whole length of the main chute 15 and into a pocket 20 at its lower end, where the coin stands edgewise on an arm 21 of the detent 14, the said coin acting by its weight to depress the arm and lift the detent 14; sufficiently to clear the teeth of the rack 13. A rigid horizontal bar 22 on the slide, however, acts as a stop to prevent the arm 21 -be-V ing depressed vmore than -is necessary to cause the detent to free the teeth of the rack,
so that the coin is still retained in the pocket 20. In the drawings, the bar 22 is shown as being a continuation of the rack 13. The abutment 18 consists of a depending finger pivoted at its upper end to a back plate 23, and held up to the position required, by a stud 24 on the slide acting on one end of rocking lever 25 whose other end is coupled at 26 to the said depending finger 18. The three coins having been inserted, the slide is free to be pulled out, whereupon the depending linger 18 is moved clear of the rear ends of the supplementary chutes 16 and 17.
This actuating mechanism is by preference mounted on a back plate 23 which is secured to a wall of the casing 2 by screws. The said back plate carries the hanging arm 18, the rocking lever 25,'the main coin chute 15, and a small fixed frame 27 spaced from the back plate. The pivoted detent 14 and the pivoted coin chutes 16 and 17 are located between the said frame and back plate. An aperture 15a may be provided in the upper part of the coin chute 15 near the coin slot 7, which allows coins of a size smaller than the one of the prescribed value to fall through into the money-box 5 without passing down to the bottom of the chutes to operate the mechanism.
Assuming the parts to be in the position shown in Fig. 1, a coin when inserted into the external slot 7 falls down the chute 16 to the far end and is retained there by the abutment 18. This tilts or trips the chute 16 so that its forward end is lifted, but the detent 14 still holds the slide locked. A second coin on being inserted into the external slot falls down the chute 17 to the far end and is retained there by the abutment 18. This tilts or trips the chute 17 so that its forward end is lifted, but no release of the slide takes place. A third coin on being inserted through the external slot falls down the main chute 15 into the pocket 20, thereby releasing the detent 14 as shown in Fig. 2. This serves to release the slide 9, which is then pulled out to effect delivery of `the article into the tray 8. The act of pulling out the slide causes the bar 22 to clear the arm 21 which is thereupon depressed by the weight of the coin resting on it, and the coin falls into the compartment 5 as shown in Fig. 3. Simultaneously, the hanging arm 18 is drawn back, as shown in Fig. 3, which releases the coins' in the supplementary chutes 16 and 17, and those coins also fall into the receptacle 5. The teeth of the rack 13 being ratchet teeth, enable them to slip past the detent 14 when the slide is pushed back.
Fromthe above description, it will be clear that when it is required that only two coins shall effect a delivery of goods, then only one supplementary coin chute is used, or if four (or more) coins are required to eiiect a delivery, then three (or more) supplementary coin chutes are applied.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim 1s:-
1. A coin freed apparatus of the type described having one or more auxiliary pivoted chutes adapted to be held in the inoperative position by the weight of the coin contained therein, substantially as described.
2. A coin freed apparatus of the type described comprising a main chute, a plurality of superimposed pivoted auxiliary chutes adapted to be normally co-acting with said main chute and disassociated therefrom when a coin is contained in each of said auxiliary chutes, an abutment adjoining the lower ends of said auxiliary chutes, means for displacing said abutment whereby the coins in all the chutes are released, and coin operated means for rendering said displacing means operative.
3. In a coin freed apparatus of the type described, the combination with a slide of oneV or more pivoted auxiliary chutes, an abutment to cause the coins to be held there-Y in, and means connected with the slide adapted to disengage the abutment, substantially as described.
