FRANK P. DARCY, on KALAMAZOO, MICHIGAN.
UPHOLSTERING DEVICE.
To all whom it may congern:
Be it known that I, FRANK P. DARGY, a citizen of the United States, residing at the city and county of Kalamazoo, State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Upholstering Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvementsin upholstering devices. V
The main object of this invention is to provide an improved upholstering device which facilitates the manufacture of cushlons.
Further objects, and objects relating to structural details, will definitely appear from the detailed description to follow.
I accomplish the objects of my invention by the devices and means described in the following specification. The invention is clearly defined and pointed out in the claims.
A structure which is a preferred embodiment of my invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawing, forming a part of this specification, in which:
Figure I is a perspective view of a structure embodying the features of my invention.
Fig. II is a detail vertical section on a line corresponding to line 2-2 of Fig. I, the latch being shown in full lines.
Fig. III is a detail horizontal section on a line corresponding to line 3-3 of Figs. I and II.
Fig. IV is a perspective view of the form with the filling box and follower plate removed.
In the drawing similar reference characters refer to similar parts throughout the several views, and the sectional views are taken looking in the direction of the little arrows at the ends of the section lines.
Referring to the drawing, I provide a form consisting of a bottom 1 and side walls 2, the bottom being mounted on supports 3. The inner sides of the side walls are preferably chamfered, as illustrated, and are provided with a rim 4 of thin metal projecting above the side walls and secured to the outer side thereof, this rim being arranged substantially as in the Bacon Patent No. 1,159,885, Nov. 9, 1915. The filling box 5 is preferably provided with a metal flange 6 adapted .to close into the rim 4 being spaced slightly therefromso as to receive Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Man 27 1917, Application filed June 2a, 1916. i 7
Serial No. 105,353.
Fig. II.
The form is provided with arm-like keepers 7 which-project upwardly at the sides thereof and in a spaced relation to the sides to receivethe skirt 8 of the cushion and the seam parts, as will be hereinafter described. 'The form 1 is provided with suitable button holders 9-for the tufting buttons 10. The follower plate 11 is provided with the usual holes 12 for, the fastening of the tufting buttons. The keepers are provided with a plurality of ratchet teeth 13 with which the latches 14E coact. These latches are spring actuated and provided with finger pieces 15. The details of the latches are not illustrated asthey will be readily understood.
The filling box 5 is recessed at 16 to receive the keepers and provided with guides 17 which coact with the keepers to guide the filling box to and support it in position.
In the use of my improved device the cushion top 18 is suitably conformed in a tuft conforming machine and placed in the form, the tufting buttons having been previously put in position. The filling 20 is then spread upon the top and the backing 21 laid over the same. The edges of the backing and top are brought over the rim 4 of the form. The follower plate. 11 is then put in position and actuated to compress the filling and the buttons secured, the filling box being removed after the follower plate is adjusted to position. While the parts are thus secured the skirt 8 is placed over the form in reversed position or wrong side out and its edges lapped upon the projecting the'top and backing between, as shown in edges of the top and backing and secured thereto, preferably by means of fasteners 22, which are described in detail in my application, Serial No. 105,354, filed June 23, 1916. The edges may, however, be secured by sewing.
My improved upholstering device greatly facilitates the manufacture of cushions, materially expeditingan'd lessening the labor. Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is:
1. In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form comprising a bottom and side walls, keepers mounted on said form to project upwardly in a spaced rela tion to the side walls thereof and having inwardly facing ratchet keeper teeth, a
filler box recessed to receive said arms,
and side walls, keepers mounted on said' form to project upwardly in a spaced relation to the side walls thereof and having inwardly facing ratchet keeper teeth, a filler box, and latches on said follower plate 00- acting with said keeper ratchet teeth whereby the follower plate is retained in its adjusted position, said box being removable independently of said plate.
3. In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form, keepers mounted on said form to project upwardly at the sides thereof and having ratchet keeper teeth, a filler box provided with guides coacting with said keepers, a follower plate, and latches on said follower plate coacting with said keeper ratchet teeth whereby the follower plate is retained in its adjusted position,
Copies of this patent may be obtained for said box being removable independently of said plate.
4:- In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form, keepers mounted on said form to project upwardly at the sides thereof and having ratchet keeper teeth, a filler box, a follower plate, and latches on said follower. plate coacting with said keeper ratchet teeth whereby the follower plate is retained in its adjusted position, said box being removable independently of said plate. 7
5. In an upholstering machine, the combination of a form, a filler box, means for removably supporting said filler box above said form, a follower plate adapted to slide within said filler box, and automatic means for locking said follower plate in in its ad- FRANK P. DARCY. a 8.]
