OUTLET-BOX.
Specication of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 27, 1917.
Application led February 19, 1915. Serial No. 9,316.
To all whom it may concern.'
Be it knownv that I, ARTHUR WlLsoN BA- KER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Danbury, in the county of Fairfield and 'State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Outlet- Boxes, tion. A
My invention relates to electrical fittings, and more particularly to that class of fittings known in the art as outlet boxes, and the primary object of my invention is to provide an outlet box which is simple in construction, strong, durable and cheap to manufacture. Y
Another object of my invention is to provide suitable means for detachably connecting electric conduits of any desired type to the outlet box at the various points of distribution as is common in the art, the salient feature of. my invention residing in the peculiar fastening means and a new and novel plug or closure. A still further object of my to provide an outlet box which invention is wlll be capable of connection with any of the many different types of electric conduits, merely by the' provision of removable bushings secured in the manner hereinafter set forth in detail.
With the above and other objects in View my invention residesV preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a top plan viewof an outlet box including the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional view therethrough.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view of one of the nipples employed in the preferred embodiment of my invention.
Fig. 4 is a side elevation of 'one of the bushlngs.
Fig. 5 sures.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawings. c
Referring more particularly to the drawings in whlch the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated I provide an outlet box indicated generally by the numeral 1 and having a 'plurality of screw is a plan view of one of the cloof which the following is a specifica- Vfacilitating insertion and which Athreaded apertures 2, 3 and 4 in the side, end, and bottom walls, respectively, of said outlet box. Closures in the form of pe- Aripherally threaded disks 5 are provided receivable in the threaded apertures 2, 3 or 4 as so desired, each of the disks 5 having a recess 6 1n one face thereof for reception of a screw driver or the like employed for removal of the disks. When thedevice yis manufactured, it is provided with these closures, and as convenience allows, disk closures 5 are removable to allow of connection tothe outlet box or electric conduit of any of the usual forms.
I provide an improved connecting means comprises in this instance a tubular nipple 7 having the central bore thereof threaded as shown at 8 and 9, the portions 8 and 9 of said threaded bore being slightly at variance in diameter for a purpose which will hereinafter be set ings 10 are provided having external, screw threads 11, preferably for threaded engagement with any one of the apertures 2, N3 or 4, the said bushings 10 being preferably carried by the nipples 7, the former being in engagement with 'the threads 9. It will be noted from Figs. 2 and 3 that shoulders 12 are provided on the interior of the nipples 7, which. limits inward movement of the bushings 10, so that a portion of the bushings 10 may extend beyond the terminals f the nipples 7 for engagement with the threaded apertures as shown to advantage inl Fig. 2 at 13. A Any desired form of electric conduit may be threaded into the threads 8 of the nipples 7 I not desiring to limit myself to any particular type of electric conduit, and have therefore not shown any in the drawing. Any vnumber of the apertures 2,r 3 and 4 may be provided so as to increase the number of conduits which may be connected to the outlet box, and the shape of the outlet box. need not necessarily be as illustrated in the drawing. I desire to lay particular stress upon the peculiar connecting means which facilitates the connection of any number of different sizes of conduits to the nipple 7, since the threaded portions 8 may be varied according to the requirements, different nipples being provided with each, it being kept in mind that the threaded portions 9 are always of a like size, so that thesame sized bushings may be used in each instance. Armored cable may be as readily forth. Tubular bush-` one or more of these attached ag ordinary iron'lipllg and `of the outlet box has been left open, andA a plurality of lugs 14 are provided'on the 1nner walls thereof, the. saidI lugs 14 being apertured as indicated at 15 for securement thereonvof a suitable cover.
' The apertures which are not being utilized can be'closed by the disks 5, which disks may be removed for the connection of additional conduits. vIn some instances it may be found desirable to bolt, or otherwise secure the outlet box 1 to a wall or the like, and to facilitate this, I have provided a modified form of disk which is designated l'and is provided with a centrally located aperture 17 through which a vbolt or similar securing means may be passed for supporting the outsecured in any desired position. A plurality be provided, no particu-l is thought that a clear and comprehensive let box on a wall orth'e like. In this instance thedisk 16 is first placed in its opening and a bolt or similar fastening means is passed therethrough and the box may thus be of these disks may lar number being specified.
' From the above descriptionv taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it
understanding of the construction, advantagesvof my invention ymay ered. It .will be noted that when it is de sited to use the device, its disposition in desired position may be readily attained, owing to the simplicity of construction and ease with which an electric conduit may be connected thereto, and it will also be noted that the outer appearance of the device will be capable of vast improvement overv the presuse, and
be gath-v ont devices lofV this character. It is not thought that a lengthy discourse onthe otherminor advantages 'of my invention is necessary at this time, but I desire itto'bev understood that while I havey shown andde.- scribed my invention as possessing a peculiar form and construction, I may make such changes in the details thereof that do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed. v l
Having thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is: 4
1. An outlet box, including'a casing having a plurality of threaded apertures therein, closures for certain of said apertures, means engageable with certain other of said apertures for atti :Innenttherewith of electric conduits of various sizes, apertured membersassociated with certain of said threaded apertures to facilitate the secure- ,ment of the device in a desired position.
2. An outlet box including ay rectangular .Y casing having an open side and a plurality 6| of threaded apertures in its Vremaining sides, v
said casing also having threaded apertures in its end portions, closures for `certain 'of said apertures, means engageable with certain other of said apertures for attachment 'l` therewith of electric conduits of various Y sizes, apertured members associated with certain of said'threaded apertures to facilitate the securement of the device'to a stationary support. f
In testimon whereof I aiiix my signature? in presence o two Witnesses. v
ARTHUR WILSON BAKER.
