To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, BENJAMIN L. FRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, in the State of Missouri, have invented new and useful improvements in Grinding-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in grinding machines and has particular application to a hand operated grinding machine for domestic use whereby knives, scissors, shears, etc., may be readily and conveniently sharpened, my present invention being in the nature of an im rovement upon my former Patent No. 1,100, 22, dated June 23, 1914..
In carrying out my present invention, it is my purpose to improve and simplify the general construction of grinding machines of the class described and to provide a grinder wherein the grinding wheel and operating mechanism therefor will be mounted so as to provide a neat, efficient, simple, du-
rable and compact structure capable of adjustment within andrelatively to the support or clamp so that the grinding wheel may be disposed at various angles.
With the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter set forth in and falling within the scope of the claim.

Referring now to the drawings in detail, 1 designates a supporting clamp which, in the present instance, comprises a base 2 adapted to rest upon a table or analogous support, a leg 3 formed integral with the base 2 at the edge thereof and depending therefrom and having the lower end formed with a right angularly projecting foot 1 formed centrally with a threaded opening 5,

and a securing screw 6 passed through the opening 5 and'having swiveled on the upper end thereofa clamping plate 7 cooperating with the. base 2 and adapted to Upstanding from the base 2 of the supporting clamp and preferably, although not necessarily, formed integral therewith is a bracket 9 of any suitable length and formed on the upper end of the bracket 9 is a disklike casting 10 formed centrally with an opening 11 and having one face thereof formed with an annular row of teeth 12 radiating from the center of the casting and,
in the present instance, V-shaped in cross section.
1'3 designates a supporting bar having the central portion thereof enlarged to form a disk-shaped boss l lformed centrally with an outwardly projecting stud 15 adapted to pass through the opening 11 in the disklike casting l0 and having the outer end thereof secured thereto to receive a thumb nut 16. The outer face of the boss 11 is formed with an annular row of teeth 17 radiating from the center of the disk and, in this instance, V-shaped in cross section and adapted to interlock with the teeth 12 on the casting 10 upon the tightening of the thumb nut so that the supporting bar 13 of the bar 13 are bent at right angles to a the main body portion thereof and extended outwardly from the side of the bar opposite that carrying the disk-like boss 14, as at 18. These projecting end portions 18 of the bar 13 lie in parallelism with one another and formed in the inner face of one of the end portions 18 is 'a'recess 19 within which is seated an end thrust bearing 20, while formed in the remaining end portion 18 is a bearing opening 21 alining axially with the recess 19 and bearing 20 therein and journaled in the opening 21 is a shaft 22 having one end thereof seated upon the bearing 20 in the recess 19 and the opposite end Pro jecting beyond the bearing opening 21 and suitably fastened to the projecting end portion of the shaft 22 concentrically thereof is a grinding wheel 23.
Formed on the end portion 18 provided with the opening 21 concentrically of the latter and surrounding the shaft 22 is a collar 2% and encircling the collar 24: is a hub formed at diametrically opposite points with outwardly extending arms 26 carrying, at their outer extremities, right angularly projecting fingers 27 overlying the periphery of the grinding wheel at diametrically opposite points. These fingers form a. work rest and are adapted to support the knives, scissors or other implements being acted upon by the grinding wheel. In the present instance, the hub is formed with a threaded opening through which is passed a set screw 28 whereby the hub may be locked to the collar in any desired position. Formed on the end portion 18 carrying the thrust bearing 20 and projecting outwardly from such end portion in a plane parallel with the bar 13, but offset therefrom, is a supporting arm 29 formed adja cent to its lower end with an opening 30. Passed through the opening 30 is a pin 31 held in the opening by means of a set screw 32 threaded through one wall of the opening and rotatably mounted upon the pin 31 is a driving gear 33 provided with bevel teeth 34 meshing with the similar teeth of a pinion 35. keyed to the shaft 22 adjacent to the bearing 20. Suitably connected to the driving gear 33 is a handle 36 whereby the gear may be rotated.
Formed on the bar 13 and extending outwardly therefrom is a retaining arm 37 formed with an opening alining with the bearing opening 21 on the recess 19 so that the shaft 22 may pass therethrough. This retaining arm is disposed immediately adjacent to the bevel pinion between the latter and the end portion 18 formed with the bearing opening, and acts to prevent longitudinal movement of the grinding wheel shaft in one direction, thus cooperating with the end thrust bearing 20 to hold the shaft 22 in proper position.
From *the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, the construction, mode of operation and manner of employing my invention will be readily apparent. It will be seen that I have provided a grinding machine wherein the grinding wheel and the driving mechanism therefor are so arranged as to present a compact and unitary structure capable of angular adjustment relatively to the supporting bracket of the machine so that the grinding wheel may be disposed in any desired angular position.
VVhile- I have herein shown and described one preferred form of my invention by way of illustration, I wish it to be understood that I do not limit or confine myself to the precise details of construction herein described and delineated, as modification and variation may be made within the scope of the claim without departing from the spirit of the invention.
I claim:
In a grinding machine of the class described, a supporting clamp, a bracket uprising from said clamp and having the upper end thereof formed to provide a disklike boss formed centrally with an opening and having one face thereof provided with teeth radiating from the opening, of a supporting bar, a shaft carried by said bar, a grinding wheel on said shaft, means for rotating said shaft, said bar being formed with a disk-like boss, a stud formed integral with said boss centrally thereof and adapted to pass through the opening in said casting and having the outer end thereof threaded, a nut on the outer end of said stud adapted to hold the parts in adjusted position, and teeth formed on the outer face of said boss and interlocking with the teeth on said casting to maintain the parts in adjusted position.
