OFFIQE.
FOOT-PRESS TOBACCO-CUTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 20, 1917.
Application filed October 11, 1915. Serial No. 55,295.
1 '0 all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CnAnnns A. BREW- STER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kaw, in the county of Kay and State of Oklahoma, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Foot- Press Tobacco-Cutters, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to a foot press tobacco cutter and has for its object the production of a simple and efficient cutter which may be applied to an ordinary counter for permitting a plug of tobacco to be easily cut by means of the cutting knife which is actuated by means of a foot treadle.
Another object of this invention is the production of a simple and efficient cutter wherein the operating mechanism therefor will be under the counter and out of the way so that the same will not constitute an obstruction upon the top of the counter.
With these and other objects in View, this invention consists of certain novel combinations, constructions, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 is a central vertical section through the cutter.
Fig. 2 is a front elevation thereof, partly in section.
Fig. 3 is a top plan View of the cutter guide plate showing the cutter knife positioned therein.
Fig. A is a vertical central section through the cutting knife.
Fig. 5 is a plan view of one of the links comprising the connecting chain between the treadle and the reciprocating bar.
Referring to the accompanying drawings by numerals it will be seen that l designates the counter which is provided with an elongated slot 2 through which the knife 3 works. A plate 4 is carried by the counter l and is provided with an elongated slot 5 registering with the slot 2 formed in the counter. The plate a is held in engagement with the counter 1 by means of the screws 6. A hanger bracket 7 is suspended below the counter 1 as illustrated in Fig. 2 of the drawings and is substantially V-shaped, having laterally extending feet 8 which are secured to the under face of the counter 1 by means of the screws 9. A guiding sleeve 10 is carried by the depending bracket 7 and is provided with a threaded lower end for fittlngin the internally threaded hollow 11 formed upon the lower end of the bracket 7 The knife 3 is preferably rectangular in shape having a cutting blade l2, and this knife 3 is connected to a reciprocating rod 13 which rod passes through the sleeve 10, which sleeve constitutes a guide therefor. This rod 18 is provided with a hooked lower end 14 and this hooked lower end 14 engages the adjustable chain 15, which chain 15 also engages the hooked end 16 of the rocking link 17. A coiled spring 18 is carried by the rod 13 and is secured thereto at its lower end and this spring 18 is also secured at its upper end to the bracket 7 as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. v
A treadle block 19 is adapted to be supported upon the floor or other convenient support and is held in engagement with the floor by means of a strap 20. This block 19 is provided with a longitudinally extending slot 21 and treadle 22 is pivotally secured within the slot 21 as illustrated in Fig. 1 of the drawings. The treadle 22 is provided with a foot-engaging portion 23 at its outer end whereas the inner end of the treadle 22 passes under the inner end of the rockin link 17 for the purpose of rocking the link 17 as the treadle 22 is rocked.
The adjustable chain 15 comprises a plurality of links 24 which are substantially 8- shaped formed from a single strand of wire and having the free ends rolled over to produce eyes 25 for surrounding the shank portions 26 of the link.
It will therefore be seen that by means of the specially constructed link illustrated in Fig. 5, a plurality of loop portions has been produced upon the link to permit the chain to beeasily adjusted to suit themovement desired for the knife by permitting the links to be easily connected to the hooks 14 and 16. 7
From the foregoing description it will be seen that a very simple and efficient mechanism has been produced for the purpose of permitting the reciprocation of the knife 3 by means of the operation of the treadle 22. For instance, when it is desired to cut a plug of tobacco or other article, the tobacco is slipped under the cutting blade 12 and pressure is brought to bear upon the treadle 22 which will cause the cutting blade 12 to be drawn downwardly through the slot 5 in the plate 4: and thereby sever the material which is desired to be out.
Vhat I claim is 1. A cutter of the class described comprising a support, a guiding bracket carried by said support and provided with a centrally located aperture, a sleeve threaded through said aperture, a cutting knife, a reciprocating rod engaging said cutting knife, said cutting knife comprising an elongated body having a centrally located aperture provided with a cutting blade upon the top thereof, a spring carried by said reciprocating rod and normally urging said rod upwardly, the lower end of said reciprocating rod provided with an eye, a chain connected to said eye, and treadle means connected to the lower end of said chain for reciprocating said cutting knife through said guiding bracket.
2. A cutter of the class described comprising a cutting member, a reciprocating rod carried by said member, a treadle block, said treadle block provided with a longitudinally extending slot, a treadle pivotally mounted in one end of said longitudinally extending slot, a link pivotally mounted in the other end of said longitudinally extending slot, means connecting said link to said reciprocating rod, the inner end of said treadle engaging the inner end of said link for swinging said link as said treadle is pushed downwardly, and a foot engaging portion carried by said treadle for facilitating the swinging thereof.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature.
CHARLES A. BREWSTER.
