UNTTED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
FRANK A. BEAN, GF CARROLLTON, OHIO.
TROLLEY-WIRE HANGER.
Application filed J'u1y 13, 1915.
To all whom it may concern: 7
Be it known that I, FRANK A. BEAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Carrollton, in the count Y of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Trolley-VVii-e Hangers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to trolley wire supports, and more particularly to an improved clamping ear for use in connection with a trolley wire or like conductor.
The primary object of my invention is to provide a trolley wire support which may be easily and quickly attached to and detached from the cross arm of a supporting pole, and which will securely and positively retain a trolley wire or the like conductor in position.
Another object of my invention is to provide a trolley wire support which may be adapted for use either in connection with supports of the cross arm type or in connection with span wire supports.
WVith the above and other objects in view my invention resides preferably in the construction, combination, and arrangement of parts as hereinafter set forth in the specification and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side elevation of a trolley wire support embodying the improvements of my invention.
Fig. 2 is an end elevation of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view taken on the line 33 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4t is an elevational view of a moditied form of my invention.
Similar reference characters indicate similar parts throughout the various views of the drawings.
In the drawings, wherein the preferred embodiment of my invention is illustrated, a cross arm 1 of the usual trolley supporting pole is shown. My invention includes a body 2 substantially frusto-conical in shape and having a frusto-conical central bore 3 therein.
A supporting frame for the body 2 is provided including a plurality of arms 1 and 5 having semi-circular portions (3 and 7, respectively, and formed with clamping portions 8 and 9, respectively. Suitable clamping bolts 10 extend through the arms Specification of Letters Patent.

Serial No. 39,685.
4; and 5 in order to securely maintain the same in engagement with the cross arm 1.
The trolley wire engaging ear comprises a pair of clamping members 11 and 12 having their lower adjacent extremities formed to provide clamping jaws 13 and 1&, respectively, said clamping jaws engaging a grooved trolley wire 15. The clamping member 11 is provided on its upper eXtremity with a threaded shank 16 on which a retaining nut 17 is receivable. The inner face of the clamping member 11 is provided with a recess 18 and an inclined face 19. The clamping member 12 is provided with a projecting portion forming a shoulder 20 for engagement in the recess 18, said clamping members havin their adjacent faces complementally inclined as shown to advantage in Fig. 3. The clamping members when assembled are substantially. frustoconical adjacent their upper extremities for reception in the bore 3 of the body 2, said bore being lined with suitable insulating bushing 21, an insulating washer 22 being interposed between the nut 17 and the upper end of the body 2. It will be seen that in clamping a wire or the like conductor, the
sections of the clamping element are assemclamping members 11 and 12 are now inserted in the bore 3 and the nut 17 disposed thereon. Upon tightening the nut the sections 11 and 12, by virtue of their inclined faces, being of frusto-conical contour when assembled will be wedged into the bore 3 of the body 2 securely clamping a wire or the like conductor.
In Fig. 1 a'modified form of the invention is shown, the body 2 having the arms 6 and 7 eliminated and replaced with lugs 28, said lugs having openings 24 therein to receive the extremities of suitable span'wires. The other parts of this form of the invention are substantially identical with that form of the invention hereinbefore shown and described.
It is thought from the above description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing that a clear and comprehensive understanding of the construction, use, and advantages of my invention may be readily gathered. It will be noted that the range of uses to which the invention may be placed is unlimited, the principal novelty lying in the peculiar manner in which the clamping elements of the invention are constructed. It will also be noted that soldering or weld ing of the trolley ear which is common at the present time is obviated when my invention is used, which not alone is cheaper in construction but also saves considerable time when erecting an overhead conductor. It is to be understood, of course, that while I have shown and described my invention as embodying a peculiar form and construction, certain changes may be made in the details thereof which do not depart from the spirit and scope of the invention as claimed.
What is claimed is:
1. In a trolley wire hanger, a supporting body having an opening therein, a clamping element including a pair of wire engaging arms, one of said arms having a pocket formed therein and a screw threaded shank upon its upper end, a hooked portion formed upon the remaining arm received by said pocket, said arms adapted for reception in the opening in the supporting body, and
means engaged with said screw threaded shank for maintaining the arms upon the supporting body.
2. In a trolley wire hanger, a supporting body having a frusto-conical opening therein, a clamping element including a pair of arms having Wire engaging jaws formed upon the lower extremities thereof, one of said arms being provided with a pocket and a screw threaded shank arranged upon its upper end, a hooked portion formed upon the remaining arm received by said pocket, said. arms being of a shape complemental to the shape of the opening in the body and receivable thereby, and means engaged with said screw threaded shank for maintaining the arms upon the supporting body.
In testimony whereof I afiiX my signature in presence of two Witnesses.
FRANK A. BEAN.
