To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JOHN STOGDELL STOKES, a citizen of the United States, residing at Moorestown, in the county of Burlington and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Sealed-Trapped Packages, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to a sealed wrapped package of that character wherein a cover or wrapper is employed which completely envelops the boxor container in such manner as to effectively exclude air, moisture, vermin and foreign matter which might tend to injure or destroy the contents.

While the ordinary sealed wrapped or tight wrapped package is very effective so far as the protection of the contents or goods is concerned, it usually possesses the disadvantage that the wrapper or cover completely conceals the joints, scams or other sections of the box which are intended to be ruptured or broken for the purpose of per- 'mitting the removal of the contents, and the result is that in opening one of wrapped packages it is usually employ a knife to cut away parts or portions of the walls, for, in instances where the walls are merely broken away by the person, there is always present the liability these tight necessary to vof breaking or tearing too much of the wall or walls with the result that it is practically impossible to thereafterefl'ectively close the package so as to exclude air, moisture and foreign matter.

In carrying out the present invention, I propose to provide a sealed wrapped package which when in its completely sealed and closed form, while eflectively excluding the admission of air, moisture and foreign matter, and while presenting a smooth, neat appearance, it will also possess the advantage that it is so constructed as to not only indicate what portion or section of the box is to be grasped and manipulated to open the. same, but such portion or section of the boxwill provide an effective means for actually enabling the box coverto be opened, and at the same time when the desired portion of the contents have been removed from the box or container, the cover may again be closed to protect the remaining contents.

Still a further object of the invention is the provision of a package of this character having a cover section provided with a flange which is adapted to overlie the outer face of one of the walls of the box or container, so that even though this flange be completely covered and sealed by a wrapper, 1t will protrude or extend sufficiently beyond the Wall to indicate its location and to enable it to be grasped by a person to break open or lift such cover when it is desired to obtain access to the contents of the box.

Stilla furtherobject of the invention is the provision of a package of this character wherein the box or container proper is made of a one-piece blank with the rear wall of the box constituting a hinge member carrying the cover section of the box, such cover having depending marginal flanges at the front and side edges thereof, the front marginal edge being adapted to overlie the top portion of the outer face of the front of the box, while the side flanges are adapted to fit against the inner faces of the sides of the box. Thus, when completely enveloped in a tightly adhering or sealed wrapper, the front of the cover will constitute an indication and a means for enabling the box to be readily opened, while when closed, the entire box will present a neat, smooth and attractive appearance.

With the above recited objects and others of a similar nature in view my invention consists in the construction and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claims.

Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the letter A indicates the box blank as an entirety, this blank being made of cardboard, boX- oard, paste-board or other suitable material. The main body portion of the blank is substantially rectangular in shape and is scored longitudinallyon parallel lines. as shown at 1. and is then scored transversely along the lines '2. so that when folded along the scored lines to form the box shown in Fig. 2, the end sections 3 of the blank form the front of the box. the sectionl ofthe blank constitutes the bottom of the box while the end wings 5 of the blank form the ends of the box. these end wings of course being integral with and extending from the section 1 of the blank. The back of the box which also constitutes a hinge is formed from the section 6 of the blank, while the section 7 of such blank constitutes the top or lid of the box and is integral with the hinge back 6, this section 7 having a front lap S which forms a frontdepending flange for the cover, and side laps 9 which form the depending side fianges of the cover. \Vhen the blank. such as is shown in F ig. 1. has been bentinto box-like form, such as is shown in Fig. :2, the front covers of the box are preferably stayed by triangular stay strips 10. The meeting corners of the laps 8 and 9 of the blank are preferably cut away as at 11, so that when these laps are bent along their scored lines to form the flanges of the box cover, corner spaces or gaps will exist which will remove the surplus material and which will enable the flanges 9 to be tucked in against the adjacent end walls of the box when the box is closed while the front flange 8 may fit over the front wall of the box as shown in Fig. 3.

When the box has been filled with the desired goods, it. is preferably completely wrapped in a cover, a blank of which is shown in Fig. 1. This blank is indicated as an entirety by the letter B. and the inner face thereof is completely coated with a suit able adhesive or paste. as shown at C. The blank is divided into sections by the parallel longitudinal score lines 12 and the transverse scorelines 13. The closed box is first preferably placed upon the bottom section 14: of the cover blank and preed against the same to cause the blank to adhere to the bottom of the box. The front and rear sections 15 and 16 of the blank are then folded up against the front and back of the box as shown in Fig. 5. The marginal end laps 17 of the bottom of the cover blank are then folded inward against the end walls 5 of the box, as shown in Fig. 6, and subsequently the end laps 18 of the front section of the blank are also folded inward against the end walls of the box, as shown in Fig. 7. The marginal edge strip 20 of the cover blank may now be folded down against the top or lid of the box and the end tabs 21 of this mar ginal strip folded down against the adjacent end laps 18 at the ends of the box. as shown in Fig. 8. The top section 22 of the cover blank is now folded downward and pressed against the cover or lid of the box and the end wings 23 which are preferably of the same area as the ends of the package are pressed downward and inward against the ends of the box so that the package is cont pletely covered and enveloped. as shown in Fig. 9 when the cover blank has been caused to firmlyand smoothly adhere thereto by suitable preure.

Of course I have above descriled ut one form of cover or wrapper blank and but one manner of applying the same to the box. i1i order to illustrate the invention. but it will be readily understoodv that the cover blank may be of a difi'erent form and may be applied to the closed box in any suitable manner, so long as it tightly and closely tits the same or completely envelops and seals the box so as to give the package substantially the appearance shown in Fig. 9.

'hen the package has been wrapped and scaled. as shown in Fig. 9. the contents will be preserved in the condition in which they were originally placed in the box for a long period of time, inasmuch as air. moisture and foreign matter will be excluded therefrom. It will be noted. however. that inasmuch as the front flange S of the cover overlaps and projects beyond the front wall of the. box itwill form a longitudinally extending shoulder or ledge as indicated at 2%. and this ledge will exist and be apparent even though the thin wrapper or cover overlies the same. Thus. when it is desired to open the box, it is merely necessary for a person to run the thumb-nail or finger-nail along the shoulder 21, thus ripping or breaking the wrapper paper, and then grasp the flange S and pull upward upon the same, this will open the cover and in the act of opening the cover the material of the wrapper will be severed or broken at the top end edges of the box, and of course if desired. the back wall or hinge section of the box may also be broken down, although this is usually not necessary. After the required contents have been removed from the box. if desired, the cover may again be closed down a ainst the same to protect the remainder of the contents.

Furthermore, it will be noted that the depth of the shoulder formed by the frontflange 8 of the cover is accentuated to some degree by the fact that the end portions of the flange overlie or bear against the adjacent sides of the stay strips 10. as shown in Fig. 3, and therefore the flange 5 is held away from the front wall 3 of the box by substantially the thickness of these sides of the stay strips.

While I have herein shown and described one particular embodiment of my invention. I wish it to be understood that I do notcon fine myself to all the precise details of construction herein set forth by way of illustration, as modification and variation may be made without departing from the spirit of the invention or exceeding the scope of the appended claims.

What I claimis:

1. sealedwrapped package comprising a box formed from a single blank of material bent to provide a bottom section, a rigid front walland rigid end walls, a backrwall constituting a hinge for the box and a lid or cover formed integral with the back wall and having a depending flange at its front longitudinal marginal edge, such flange overlying the outer face of the front wall of the box, and a wrapper adhesively attached to and completely enveloping the box, the lower edge ofthe depending flange which overlies the front wall of the box forming a severing edge along which the wrapper may be cut, such depending flange of itself constituting a gripping means for enabling the box to be opened.

A sealed wrapped package comprising a box. formed of a single blank of material and constituting a bottom section, a rigid front wall and rigid end walls, vertical stay strips at the meeting points of the front and end walls, a back wall for the box also constituting a hinge member and a lid or coverformed integral with the back wall of the box, said lid or cover having a depending front flange and depending end flanges, said front flange extending beyond the outer face whereby said front'fuflange forms a pronounced shoulder in conjunction with the front wall of the box, and a Wrapper completely enveloping the box when closed and adhesively attached to said box at all sides to form a tight covering therefor, and adapted to be severed along the lower edge of the front flange.

3, A sealed wrapped package comprising a body portion of a box and a cover integral with the body portion of the box and having end flanges fitting against the inner faces of the end walls of the box and a front flange overlying and extending beyond the front wall of the box, and a Wrapper completely enveloping the box and adhesively attached to all of the walls of the box, the front flange of the cover forming a shoulder in conjunction with the front wall of the box, and constituting an indicating and severing edge for that portion of the wrapper which is to be ruptured or severed to permit the opening of the box.
