Description

To all whom z'tmay' concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN DAHIANI, a subject of the King of Italy, and resident of Syracuse, inthe county of Onondaga, in the State ofNeW York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locks, of which the l following, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, is a full, clear, and
' exact description.
This invention relates to certain improvev in the manufacture of safes and the like, usually embodying locks of the combination type. g
hc prima/.ry object of the invention is to produce an, efficient combination lock for the k purpose described while obviating the use of tumblers and the like'which necessarily cause a'noise sufficient to be detected when falling into place as the operating means is moved even by one not aware of the comfrbination. Skilled persons, by Ylistening to the falling ofthe tumblers, are able to determine the combination and operate the locking mechanism to open the safe. The structure of this invention, while reuiring the exact adjustment of certain mem ers in accordance with a pre-determined combination, obviates the use of the member, the
' 30 movement of which would disclose the combination for unlocking the safe and requires an accurate and detailed knowledge of the .combination before the bolts of the lock can be withdrawn from lool-ing position.
Other objects relate to the specific features of construction -and arrangement and will more fully appear from the following desoription taken in connection 'with-the aecompanying drawings in whichof a safe embodying' this invention.
Fig. 2 is a vertical cross section'of. the
same illustrating the bolts irl-locking position, the figure being slightly reduced in size as compared with Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a View similar to Fig. 2 showing the bolts as withdrawn from locking position.
' `Fig.` 4 is a cross section on line 4 4, 1 and at substantially sections of Figs. 2 and 3.
i Fig.
The safe, a' portion of which is shown,"
ma be of the usual construction and embodies an inclosing wall -1-5- and a suitable ments in locks, particularly adapted for useV Figure 1 is a front elevation of a 'portion right angles to the' Loox.

A series of disks -16- are provided, one for each dog, having their peripherie'sl normally lying' in` substantial contact 'with the end of that ad jacent do to prevent recipro-` size adapted .to receive the ad'acentend its dog, when' the disk is move tobrin' recess -into exact registration-with the 'en i0 C the dog and for thij purpose jthef-disg. are mounted on shafts -18*-'and ire ikeyodlov on as byrnuts '-19-1 l' illiil spaced from the adjacent wallgf-U-'B--t dished washers -20-. "can move each ot the series ot dials to a -four numbers or other indicia, one for each dial, 1n order that all of the disks ma be moved into proper position to permit the movement of bolt '-9- to release the locking mechanism. The bolts S and tlare adapted to be operated' Uy a suitable handle -23-- external ot' the :'aie and adapted to operate a shaft *lhaving a bar -25- secured thereto, which bar has its opposite ends positioned in recesses 2(5- and --27- formed in bolts -iand -9- lrespectively and pi'et'erabl v the recess -27- in bolt -9- is closed by plate 2%- removably secured to the'bolt.
The operation of the lock will be readil \7 Une knowing the combination proper position to bring the respective disks -ltrotating therewith into proper position to permit movement ot the adjacent dog int-o theperipheral recessot' the disk thereby permitting reciprocation ot' bolt -9- through the lnedium ot' bar 25- operated by tht` usual handle 22B- 'lhe safe can vneither be locked nor unlocked without an accurate and detailed knowledge of the con'ibination` tht` dogs being;` held at all times 'by the. springs fand dirk 1G- in the line of .now-nient of the bolt -9-, the flanges 15 however. limiting.r '.he movement ot' the dogs toward the Loli.
It will l -f readily appaient that \arious changes may be made in the details ofcoustruction and arrangement `vithout departing from the spirit of this invention as set forth' in the appended claims,
1. A sate comprising a main wall, a movable door, a pair of bolts slidably mounted on the door, a bar for sin'uiltaneously operating both bolts, a handle outside the. sate for operating said bar, one of said 'bolts provided with a plurality ot' cam surfaces, a pair ot' substantially parallel plates adjacent the bolt, said plates ha ving alined openings, a vplurality of dogs mounted in said openings and having ends respectively in Contact with said 'am surfaces, springs between said plates for holding the end portion ot' the bolts in contact with said cam surfaces, a plurality of rotary disks, one for each dog, each disk provided with a periphcrical recess for receiving the end ot the adjacent dog, a dial for each disk and means outside the safe for rotating the disks.
2.111 a lock, a series of disks having peripheral recesses, a series of slidable dogs having' ends formed to seat in said recesses, springs normally holding the dogs out ot' the recesses, and a bolt having a plurality of cam surfaces tor moving said dogs against the tension ot' their springs into said recesses when registered therewith to permit retraction of the bolt.
3. In a lock, a series of disks having peripheral recesses, a Series of slidable dogs.
having ends formed to seat in said recesses, springs normally holdingr the dogs out ot' the recesses, a. bolt having a plurali t \1 ot' cam surfaces for moving said dogs against the tension ot' their springs into said recesses when registered therewith to permit retraction ot' the bolt` and knobs and dials in conneclion with said disks.
In witness whereof l have hereunto set lny hand this 18th day of November, 1916. JOI-IN DAMIAXL lVitnesses F. A. TnoMrsoN, 'Bnirrna N. SwAlvr.
