To all whom 't may ooncem:
Be it known that I, ROBERT B. BARBER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hazletom in the County of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Tank-Filling Valves; and I do declare the following to be a tulh clear, and exact description of the ini'ention such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in valves of the typeadapted to automatically open when ta-nks are emptied of water to permt refill'ng thereo't, and to automatically closewhen the Water or 'other fluid has risen in the tank to a predctermined level, the device being adapted primarily for use on fiushing tani-Is.
The object of the invention is to provide an extremely simple and highly eflicient 'valve of the class specified which will be held in closed position by the water pressure and will have no loose or moving joints whatever through whichthe water may leak.
lVith this general object in view, the inventicn resides in certain novel features of Construction to be hereinafter fully described and claimed, the descriptive matter being supplemented by the accompanying drawing which constitutes a part of this application, and in which: i

In specifically describing the structure shown in the drawing above briefiy described, similar characters will be employed to designate corresponding parts throughout the several views and reference will be herein made to the numerous elements' by heir respective indices. To this end, the numeral 1 designates a vertically disposed tubular inlet stem ha ving at its lower end a stop collar 2 to bear on the bottom of a tank said stem being enlarged and externally threaded below said collar as indicated at 4 to facilitate the attachment of the water supply pipe 5. The upper end ..of the stem l s provided with an enlarged integral head G here shown of cylindrical formation and as disposed on a horizontal axis. One end of said head projects a suitable distance beyond the stem l and is closed by a screw cap 7 which rotates on the axis of the head, a gasket 8 being provided to form a tight joint. Head G and cap 7 'form an outer chamber conimunicating with stem 1.
Formed integrally with the upper end of stem l on the side thereof opposed to the projecting end of said head 6, is a Vertical water discharge neck 9, the upper end of said neck and said stern being in communication through the instrunentality of a port 10 disposed in line with the axis ot the head, said head having in its outcr side an opening ll disposed on said axis. A tube or inner ch amber 12 is threaded into the enlarged inner end of the port 10 and extends therefrom into the head 6, the 'free end of said tube being rounded as indicated at 13, wherebya it constitutes an e'fective valve seat (see Fig. 5).
A horizontal valve stem 14 passes through the opening 11, the port 10, and the tube 12, the inner end of said stem carrying a valve 15 coperating with the seat 13. The Valve 15 includes an imperforate nut 16 threaded on the inner end of the stem 14, a packing disk 17 of suitable composition being clamped between said dish and a collar 18 which is i'ormed integrally with the stem 14. To prevent the edge of the disk 17 froni warping and to thereby always hold said disk in proper position for effective engagement with the seat 13, a ring 19 is threaded on the nut 16 as shown clearly in Figs. 5 and G, one side of said ring having an internal annular flange 20 which clamps the` edge of the disk between itself and the nut 16. The periphery of ring 19 has formed thereon a plurality of projections 21 which are adapted to slidably contact With the interior of the head 6 to guide the valve in its movement and at the same time to suificiently space it from said head to pern'itthe passage oli' water around said Valve.
One or more lugs 22 may be formed integrally with and project laterally from the upper end of the neck 9 above the opening 11, two of said lugs being here shown, and the lower end of a lever 23 is fulcrumed between said lugs as indicated at 2 1, the lower end of said lever having a suitably shaped head 25 which is received in a slot 26 in an ear 27, said ear projecting horizontally from a nut 28 threaded on the outer end of stem la. The upper end o'l' lever 23 is in the form of a disk 29 having teeth 30 which engage similar teeth on a second disk 31, the two being clamped together by a set screw or the like 32. The edge of the disk 31 has forned integrally therewith a sleeve 33 in which the stem 34 of a float 35 is adjustably secured by means of a set screw 36. The disks 29 and 31 with their coperating teeth and the set screw pernit the float stein 3-t to be so adjusted as to cause the valve to cut oli the water supply at any desired level.
Preterably enployed in connection with the :features above described, is a screw plug 38 which norn'ally closes an opening 35) in the upper end ol? the neck I), this arrangement being provided in. order that by rcinoviug said screw, a tube may be 'tappcd .into the opening 3 to supply an a Hill' [low of water to a closet bowl to rclill the hopper thcreof after fiushing.
By constructing the improved valve in the manner shown and described, .it will be not only simple and inexpensive, but will be highly eliicient and dui-able, particular emphasis being laid upon the fact thatno loose or inoving joints exist through which water may leak, it being evident that when the valve 15 is closed, the water will be trapped in the head 6 and will exert its pressure against said valve to hold the latter seated. This pressure also assists the float 35 in closing the valve, as will be ohvious.
In use, the device will be installed as shown in Fig. 1 and the tank being normally full, the float willbe elevated with the result that the valve 15 is closed, being held in this position by the water pressure as above stated. Vhen, however, water is discharged from the tank 3, the fioat 35 will lower, thus causing the parts operated thereby to open valve 15 to again permit the device to supply water to the tank to refill the same (see Fig. 3).
In the foregoing, I have described certain specific details for illustrative purposes, and in the acconpanying drawngs the same have been shown, but it is to be understood that within the scopo of the invention as claimed, numerous changes may he made without sacrificing the main advantages thei-cof. It will also be understood that the invention may be embodied in other than fioat controlled Valve devices.
I claim:
A tank filling valve comprising a tubular one piece vertical inlet stem having a hollow horizontally clisposcd cylindrical head 'orned integrally with its upper end, said head being closed at one end by a removable screw cap and having a horizontal port leading froni its other end in line with the axis of the head, a vertical outlet neck into the upper end of which said v port dischargcs, said neck being tornied integrally with the inlct stem and having an openi'g in horizontal alinenent with said port, a pair of lugs lorned integrally with the u ppcr end of said ncck and projecting there- 'froni above said opening, a short horizontal tube threaded in the aforcsaid port and extendiug into the hollow head, the 'free end ol? said tube being disposed .in a vertical plane to form a valve seat, a valve in the head having projections slidable on the curved wall thereo'f and having a fiat gasket for contact with said valve seat, a Valve stem extendi ng horizontally from said Valve through the port and the aforesaid opening, a nut threaded on the outer end of said valve stem and having an integral horizontally extending ear at its upper edge underlying the aforesaid lugs, said ear having a slot opening through its u'pper and lower sides, a vertically disposed lever fulcrumed between its ends between said ears and having an elongated head on its lower end received in the slot of said ear, said head having rounded ends 'for contact with the ends of the slot, a float stem extending late 'ally from the upper end ot' the lever, and a float on said stem.
