STIRRUP.
1 ,219, 525. Specication of Letters latent. Patented Mar, 20, 191 '7,
\ Application led June 21, 19118. Serial No. 195,039.
To all Lo/wm it may concern.'
Bc it known that I, HENRY ZIMMERMAN, a citizen of the United. States, residing at Rouleau, in 'the Province of Saskatchewan and Dominion of Canada, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Stirrups,
of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in stir-rups and more particularly to a safety stirrup and its object primarlly is to produce a stirrup from which the rider may readily extricate his feet and so avoid the possibility of painful or 'fatal accident should he be thrown' from his mount; or in caso of ai run-a-way, etc. More specifically the invention contemplates the manufacture. of a stirrup having a hinged foot plate one end of which ma)7V he released from op-v erative position by an upward, downward or transverse movement of a release lever thereby enabling the rider to operate the lever with little forethought. foregoing and other objects in View the invention consists in the comloinatio'n` and arrangement of parts to be hereinafter fully described in this specification, pointed out in the appended claims and illustrated in the accompanyin drawings which form a part of said speci cation and in which-' Figure 1 is a front view of a stirrup constructed in accordance with my present invention.
liig. 2 is an enlarged fragmentary view of the same. l
Fig. 3 is a section taken on line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. '1 is a top plan view of the device.
Like reference characters denote correspondiug parteI throughout the several views.
My stirrup comprises the side plates 1, 2 connected by the top bar 3 that is supported by the stirrup' leather 4. The side plates r'livorgc 'From the bar f l to the foot plate 5 which connected by liiuge (i to the plate 1. The side plate i carries a pin 7 whereon a link 8 is pivotallY siiipported and said link is conilrfted h v the loot har fl with the pit- !uan l() which formed with an elongated ylot ll that receives tho stop pin l2 carried by the plate rThe lower end of the pit-man l() is diff-owed omioaitl-l the mouth of a recess 12. 'formed iu the plate 2. and carries a piu 1' i' dlsllosod in that recess, the 'ii'ineri-ind of 'mid pin lei/oe' connected to a link 15 'which l d iu a channel 1C that communi- ;br ris-.fessi 13 and n ith a lower rewith the` cess 17 the mouth of which opens upon the Slde of plate 2 away from the mouth of the recess 13. A pin 18 is disposed in the re cess 17 and servos as a 'rest for the lower end of the link 15 ard is formed with a collar 19 of greater diameter than that recess and with an integral collar 20 of smaller diameter than that recessv and disposed within the same. An expansion spring 21 isl arranged upon the pin 13 with one end abutting a hinge 22 and tle other secured to the said collar 20. The pivoted leaf ofhinge 22 is normally disposed in a slot 23 formed inthe plate 2 and is su pported upon theJ inner end of the said Vpin l8; the said hinge 22 being secured to the foot plate 5 to normally retain the same in ope ative engagement with the plate 2.
In Fig. l., full lines the stirrup is shown iu operative position. The rider` rests his foot upon the foot plate 5. To open the stirrup the foot plate 5 is dropped to open or inoperative position, shown in dotted lines. To` perform this op erationV the rider may raise his foot against the bar 9 thus raising the link 15 ofi the pi o 18 and out of engagement with the collar 2l) and permitting the spring 21 to eject the pin 18.2 VVithdraWal of the pin. 18 will withdraw the support ofthe hinge 22 and permit the same, together with the foot plate 5, to drop into open position and so release tle riders foot. Should the rider move the bar 9 ltransversely he will also disengage the link 15 and pin 18, or should l-.e depress the bar by hand he will force the link 15 off the pin 18 and, in any event, release it froml engagement with the said pin 18 and callar 20. lt is obvious that many minor changes and alterations may be made in the forjn and construction of the invention without in any way departing from the spirit of the invention. 1t is not tliereiore desired to confine the invention to the precise form herein shown, but it is intended to includ( all such come properly within the scope claimed.
What is claimtd is:--
l. ln a stirrup. ride plates, one of which is formed with up wr' and lower recesses and with an upper c ranno! connecting SaidV recesses and a lowe el'rannel leading from the lower' recess to tic und ol' the plate, a top lmr connecting." said -idu plates. a foot plate hinged to one of said sidIIA plait-s. a link pivot- :lll\' carried by said eide plate. a pitiuan carried hy the oppofitc sidi: plate and movable longitudinally thereof in a limited degree, a ha r eonneeting said link and pitman; a link disposed in the upper channeled portion of said 'Inst named side plate, e hinge carried by said foot plate und normally disposed in the lower channeled portion of seid side plate,
-a pin. disposed in the lower recessed portion of snid side plate and'normally l'cmneeting said hlngeand link, a connection between said link and the said pltlnai'T through the .niedinni of said upper recess, a Collar slidahle upon the last named pin and normally in engagement with the last named link and `i spring,r eneireling'said last named pin and said collar.
2. In u stirrnp, side plates, one of which is formed with upper arid lowerrecesses and side plate, a hinge carried by said toot plete 25 and normally disposed in the lower channeled portion of said last named side plate, a pin disposed in the lower recessed portion of said last named side plate :1nd normally connecting said hingeV and the last named 30 link, means carried by said pin for moving the same, with relation to its side plate, when disengaged from the last named link, and nliannally operable or foot-controlled means connecting thefirst and last named links and 35 partly disposed in said upper recess whereb relative movement of the latter may be e feeted to disengage the same from the said pin.
In testimony that' I claim the foregoing 40 as my own I have hereto aiixed iny signature in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
