Be it known that I, Gns'ravn SUMMER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cool: and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Brushes; and I. do doclare the following to be a. full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of re erence marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

This invention relates to lll'iPlOVGlDQlitS in what may be termed shoe polishing, otherwise known as blackening, brushes, although it is adapted to more extended uses as will appear hereinafter from the subsequent disclosure.

The invention has for its object, primarily to provide a compact and handy device 0 the aforesaid type, which is highly portable, being adapted to be carried upon the person as in the pocket or otherwise ready for immediate and extemporaneous use.

A further object is to provide for incasing or inclosing the polish either in liquid or paste form, as well as the dauber and brush proper, in a common container or holder.

A still further object is to so position or arrange the respective parts as to provide for readily filling or replenishing the polishreceiving chamber, also for feeding by gravity thepolish to the dauber as the latter is used in applying the liquid or polish to the object being treated.

A still further object is to provide for the convenient housing of the brush proper while effecting the application of the polish, and for the ready withdrawal and disposal of the brush for use in effecting the polishing operation and at the same time provide for housing the dauber, it then, of course, being out of use.

Still further objects and advantages of my invention will be made apparent from the following description and accompanying illustration.

The invention consists therefore of certain instrumentalities and features of construction substantially as hereinafter fully disclosed and defined by the appended claim.

In the accompanying drawing is illustrated the preferred embodiment of one form of my invention wherein it will be understood that various changes or modifications may be made as to the detailed construction and arrangement of parts without departing from the scope or spirit of the claim, and in which drawing- Figure 1 is a central longitudinal section of my invention, with the brush proper, slightly withdrawn.

Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same, the brush proper having been previously withdrawn and reinserted in inverted position as when used for effecting the polishing operation.

Fig. 3 is a central transverse section of the device viewing toward the filling end or dauber, with the brush proper in housed position and shown in dotted outline as when in usable position.

Fig. i is a detached end view of the dauber-holder, with the dauber removed, showing more especially the pointed clips or fastenings which secure the dauber, also showing the polish-passage through the bot tom of said dauber-holder.

In carrying out my invention, I provide a suitable container or casing 1 preferably rectangular or oblong in general outline, the same beingsubdivi ed into two compartments or chambers 2 and 8. The chamber 2 holds the polish or liquid, in paste form, and into which chamber the polish is poured or inserted through an opening or passage 4t provided through one end of said chamber.

The brush proper, designated as 6, is contained within the compartment or chamber 3, of the container or casing l as seen especially in Figs. 1 and 3, said. brush proper being arranged to provide for the initial presentation of its polishing portion or face inwardly or toward the bottom of said chamber to provide against its exposure externally. The back 7 of the brush proper 6 projects laterally somewhat beyond the brush or fibrous portion thereof as at 8 to provide for measurably spacing said fibrous portion from the side-walls of the chamber 3 as seen particularly in Fig. Said lat erally projecting portions 8 are themselves provided with longitudinal ribs 9 which are received in corresponding grooves or channels 10 formed in the inner surfaces of the walls of the chamber 3, to provide for the brush proper having a slidable movement, as in withdrawing and reinserting the latter, and for the retention thereof when in position in the container. Also, it will be sequently in communication seen that by means of this arrangement, the brush proper is adapted, when withdrawn from the container, to be inverted, and reinserted thereinto, with its fibrous or applying portion presented for use in effecting the rubbing or polishing operation as seen particularly in Fig. 2, of course, after using the dauber in applying the polish. To the top 7 at the withdrawing end of the bliUSll proper is preferably secured a vertical end plate or piece 11 having formed therein a notch or recess 12 for the reception of the finger tip or nail for the ready removal of the brush. The opposite end of the brush top 7 is adapted to Inrojeet as at 13 to provide for spacing it with respect to that end Wall of the chamber 3 to retain the fibrous portion of the brush proper out of contact therewith.

The dauber, designated as 1 1, of suitably fibrous material or bristles and requisitely conformed for its intended purpose, is suitably seated or contained within a preferably metallic holder 15, said holder being of socket-like formation, the outer edge of which has formed therewith inturned pointed clips or studs 16 entering the fibrous portion of the dauber for effecting fastening connection therebetween. The holder or member 15 has integral therewith an externally screw-threaded tubular stem or plug 17 which is screwed or threaded within the passage 4 of the container 1 and conwith the polish containing chamber 2, said end of the container being preferably thickened particularly as indicated at 18 in Fig. l, and through which tubular stem the polish is delivered or fed to the dauber, as is readily apparent from said figure.

The container or receptacle 1 is fitted at one end with a cap 19 for housing the dauber 14:, especially when the latter is not in use, said receptacle or container being preferably reduced in transverse section as at 20 to provide for the fitting of the cap thereon flush with its exterior surface. Said container or receptacle 1 has upon its reduced portion, near the inner end, a continuous bead 21 which enters or is sprung into a corresponding channel or groove 22 in the inner surface of the cap, near its inner end for the fastening of the cap in place upon the con tainer, over the dauber.

Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the ishing of shoes or The operation of the device is thought apparent from the foregoing description taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, it being necessary only to state, hovever, that, after having suitably filled the chamber 2 with the polish, through the passage lin the one end wall, thereof, it being understood that the dauber has been removed with the cap therefor, it is only required that the dauber be replaced and the container presented with its dauber end downwardly, when, of course, the polish will be supplied by gravity through the tubular stem or plug 17 to the dauber and the operation of applying the polish may be proceeded with as required. After porformii'ig such polish-applying operation, the dauber is suitably housed by replacing the cap thereover, and the brush proper (3 removed andinverted, and replaced so inverted, when the polishing operation may be proceeded with in the well understood manner.

Amongthe many uses, aside from the polother form of foot-wear, for which my invention may be employed, the following may be recited. In the military service, the device may be used for carrying oil for applying to the various equipments of leather, whether upon field or in the barracks, as the saddle or bridle or other parts of harness; to the care of the rifle and to the polishing of metal, leather,

wood or any other material, and sundry other purposes.

I claim A device of the type described, including a compartmental polish-containing chainber, one compartment being adapted to contain a brush having an invertible and slidable connection therewith, and a dauberholcler having a plug threaded into an end wall of said polish-containing chamber, said plug havinga longitudinal bore establishing communication between said polish-containing chamber and said dauber-holder, and also establishing, otherwise unaided, connection therebetween.
