TOOTH-BRUSH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 9, 1916. Serial No. 83,037.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, Anrroxsn ARTHUR Plomo, a nativeof Canada, and -.a resident of the borough of Manhattan, city, county,
and State of New York, have invented cerf tain new and useful Improvements in Tooth- Brushes, of which the following is a specification.
The object ot my invention is to afford a cheap but eiiicient sanitary tooth brush or cleaner that may be used once. and discarded to be replaced by another,-this detachable and discardable brush pad or rubber being made preferably of relatively soft absorbent material so that it may be charged with a suitable. dentifrice, antiseptic, or other consttuent for direct application tothe teeth and gums ot' the user.
The invention consists in the specific construction and arrangement of .parts described and claimed herein, a distinctive feature being the holder formed with a medial supporting member for the brush pad, inconjunction with elastic resilient lateral jaw members and means tor clamping them medial supportin more fully set fort 1.
In the accompanying drawings,
member, as hereinafter Figure l is a ers ective View ot a tooth e i l) brush embodying the essential features of my invention;I
Fig. 2, is a central longitudinal section of the construction shown in Fig. 1;
Fig. lar-ged scale taken upon plane of line SSAT-3, Fig. 2;`
Fig. 4, is a' central longitudinal sectional elevation of a slightly modified structure;
Fig. 5, is a transverse sectionnpon an en-- l: rged scale taken upon plane of line 5 5, Fig. 4; K
Fig. (i, is a perspective view of the brush pad shown in Figs. 1, 2, and 3, detached;
Fig. 7, is a similar View of the brush pad shown in Figs. 4, and 5; i
Fig. 8, is a. cross section of a brush pad in which bristles are used.
The essential features of the holder or handle H, are, the medial supporting member k, the lateral-jawmembers 7L', 71,', and theclasp C, by means of which these members, particularly the jaw members 7L', 7L', may he clamped against the sides of the brush pad or element B, to hold it in posi- 3, is a transverse section upon an en-` tion t'or use, or released t0 admit of the discard ot' said brush member B.
Presuming the handle H, to be made of material having elastic resilientqualities vto a greater or less extent, as of Celluloid and similar compositions and materials available for the purpose, it is obvious that it' the external sides of the jaw members 71,, 7i', are tapered or inclined more or less convergently to 'ard the rear of the handle as in Fig. 1, ot the drawings, the forward thrust of the clasp C, will force the side jaws 7M, 71.', in toward'eaeh other, thereby clamping between them the sides and base ot' the brush pad or element B, restingon the medial supporting member 71., of the handle Il.
In Figs. 1, 2, and 3, the medial tongue or support 71, is shown as adapted for insertion in a brush B, havinglate 'al extensions 71,17), to be clamped between said medial tongue or member 71., and the side jaws 71,', '71,', as shown more particularly in Fig. 3, whereas in Figs.- 4, and 5, the medial member 71, forms simply a floor support for the comparatively solid brush pad B, the spine or base 71', of which is clamped by and between the jaws 72.', 71,", as shown more particularly in Fig. 5. In either case the result is the same in that the brush pad Jor element B. is firmly secured in position on the handle Il, in Such a manner as to be available for use. If desired this result may be still further insured by providing the inner sides of the jawslzf. 71.. with barbs or protuberanccs 71,, 7L, as indicated in Fig. 5, or by serrating or lroughening said inner surfaces of the laws in a manner well known to increase frietional contact with the brush pad B.
rlhus l do not'limit myself to any particular construction of my elongated brush pad B. as it is obvious that various modifications thereof may be resorted to without departing tronrthe spirit and intent ot my invention in this respect. For instance the base. 7)', of the brush pad B, shown in cross l Patented Mar. 13, 1917.
application to and in the mouth of the user,
Valthough it is obvious that a powdered dentifrice, antiseptic 0r similar constituent may be applied to the brush pad if foiind expedient. j
In this connection it may be stated that my brush is especially efficacious for use in hospitals and situations where there is danger of contamination, infection or contagion, sin-ce it affords a convenient medium not only for` cleanliness and sanitation, but also as a means for applying a medicament and special treatments in the case of invalids and patients-the brush pad being capable of immediate detachment and destruction after use, and the handle H, being easily cleansed and sterilized by means well known.
Obviously the form of clasp C, used is of secondary importance provided its performsv the function described herein, i. c., that ofafl'ording means whereby the jaws h', L, may be clamped against the brush pad B upon the medial supporting member L, tov secure it on the handle H, in position for use.
Nliat I claim as my invention and desire to secure by Letters Patent is,-
1. A toothbrush of the character designated, comprising a handle formed with a. mediall supporting member and lateral jaav members of'. resilient material, a removable brush pad adapted to rest on said medial supporting member and to be embraced by vsaid jaw members, and a clasp slidabljy embracing said medial supporting member and the jaw members for clamping said pad in position.
2. A tooth brush of the character designated, comprising a one-piece handle of elastic resilient material formed with a medial supporting member and with clamping jaws extending on opposite sides thereof, a removable brush pad supported upon said medial vsupporting member, and means slid- .,ably embracing said medial supporting menibervand clamping jaws to firmly clamp said pad between said jaws.
3. A tooth brush of the character desigs4 iiated, comprising a one-piece handle of clastic resilieiitbmaterial formed with a medial supporting member and with clamping, jaws
