To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANKLIN G. Pownns, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Combined Mitering and Type-l-ligh-Leveling Machines; and I do hereby declare that the-following is a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming a part of this specification.
The object of the invention primarily, is a machine or device by means of which two essential operations in the printing art are expeditiously and more efliciently performed, one being the mitering of the'typehigh rule, and to obtain a true joint, and the other the truing of warped printing cuts for the printing forms;
Secondly, to utilize the tool-guiding member of the mitering device with the typehigh device, for squaring the printing cuts in the same machine.
The invention consists in the novel construction and combination of parts, such as will be first fully described, and then specifieally pointed out in the claims.

Referring to the drawings, 10 indicates the base or bed of the machine, which, for the purpose consists of a flat plate 12, from which extends downwardly from the longitudinal outer portions of the plate the longitudinal side plates or members 13, 13, the upper surface of the plate 12 being made level and smooth. The base or bed 10 is made preferably from metal, and may be cast or made in any other manner preferred, there being cast on the forward side member 13, and in'line with said plate 12, a lug 14, which is located a short distance from a point intermediate the ends 12 and 12*, of said plate 12, in the direction of the end 12*. In said lug is a vertical opening 1 k, and in its upper surface and plate 12 is a circular recess 14* (see Fig. 4:).

Upon the angular portion of the plate which is toward the end 12, of plate 12, is a vertical gage plate 17, upon which are gage lines 17, indicating relative spaces between the type, as further alluded to, and from the straight portion of the plate 16 extends upwardly the same height as plate 17 the squaring plate18, the former plate 17 being at an angle of to the said plate 18, the ends of said plates 17 and 18, in the direction of the vertex of the plate 16, meeting together and forming a sharp point 17 At this point and connected rigidly with plate 16 is a circular plate 19, and connected with the lower surface and adjacent the outer, peripheral portion of said plate 19 is a pin 20, which extends downwardly within the opening 1 1, in the lug 14 (see Fig. 4). Upon the gage plate 17 is an adjustable gage plate or lug 21, having a groove 22, which receives the upper surface of the gage plate 17 and through one portion of said plate or lug, on the inner side of plate 17, is an adjusting set screw 23, having a head 24 (see Fig. 8).
In the base plate 12, a short distance inwardly from the line of the inner surface of the side plate or member 13, is a slot 25, in the arc of a circle, and drawn from the pivot 14, of the gage plate 15, in the lug 14, the slot communicating at the end toward the end 12, of plate 12, in a circular opening 26.
Extending upwardly through the slot 25 from the under surface of plate 12, is a screw bolt 27, having a flat head, which bears upon said surface upon one side of slot 25. The upper end of the screw bolt 27 extends within the lower, internally screw-threaded thumb screw 28, which bears upon and clamps upon the upper surface of the plate 12, and holds said plate ad ustably in posit-ion upon the base plate 12. At the end portion 12", of plate 12, in the angle adjacent the side member 13 and within the screw-tlneaded opening 29, is secured the lower end of a screw bolt 30, having a head 31. Upon said bolt is an antifric-tion guide roller 32, the outer, peripheral surface of which roller is in vertical alinement with the longitudinal surface of the side member 13, of the base plate.
In the upper surface of the plate 12, in the direction of the end 12, of the plate 12, and at a considerable distance inwardly from said end is secured a screwbolt 33, upon which is a vertical friction guide roller 34, the peripheral portion of which roller is in vertical adinement with the outer, longitudinal and vertical surface of the side member 13, of said base plate. In said vertical side members 13, 13, of the base plate, at points equidistant from the ends 12, 12*, of plate 12, are the respective square and round openings 35, 35 (see Figs. 3 and 7).
In the round openin u35 is inserted the reduced circular end portion 36, of a reciprocating bar 36, the other end of which bar extends through the square opening 35, in the side member 13, of the base plate, and a short distance outwardly from the line of the outer surface of said side plate 13, and in said portion is secured the lower end portion of a screw bolt 37, upon which is a guide roller 38. 40 indicates a coiled spring, one free end 41 of which is extended to the bar 36 and inserted within an opening 36*, in the side of said bar, at a point equi-distant from its ends, and the other free end of said spring extended along the inner surface of the side plate 13 of the base plate above said bar 36, and the extreme end bent at right angles and inserted within an opening in said side plate 13, at 43.
Upon the outer surface of the side plate 13, and secured thereto by the screw bolts 44 and 45, are the respective rollers 46 and 47, the rollers being arranged at short distances inwardly from the line of the ends 12' and 12*, of plate 12, and the peripheral portion slightly below the plane of the upper surface of said plate.
l/Vith the end portions 12 and 12*, of plate 12, are connected, in the manner further described, the typehigh leveling roller guide abutments 49 and 50, the roller 50 being shorter in length than the roller 49. The roller attachments for the roller 49 consist of short bars 51, 51, of the proper length to support the typehigh roller 49 at the precise height or measure of type above the plane of the base plate 12, and are rounded or curved at each end, as further described. The lower ends of said bars extend a short distance inwardly beneath the end portion 12, of plate 12, and parallel with the inner surfaces of the side members or plates 13, 13, and are provided with longitiidinally-extended slots 52, at their lower end portions, these slots being nearer in position on the inner longitudinal surfaces of the bars. These bars are secured to the side plates 13, 13, by the pivots 53, which eX- tend through the plate 52, in the respective bars 51, 51, into said side plates.
Notches 54 are made in said plates 51,51, from the inner surfaces of said plates, immediately above the slots 53, and from the inner surfaces of the notches extend upwardly the rabbets 55, opposite which rabbets are downward extensions 55, which form locking projections or pins.
In the end portion 12, of plate 12, are narrow slots 56, within which the bars 51, 51 enter when moved upwardly in position, and in said plate 12, a short distance inwardly from the inner ends of said slots, are square openings 57, which receive the projection or pins 54, on the bars 51, 51.
In the outer end portions of bars 51, 51, are openings 51, within which are pivoted the end portions of said roller 49, the outer surfaces of the bars being in alinen'lent with the peripheral surfaces of said roller. At the other end of plate 12, and in the bars 58, 58, the slots 52 are dispensed with, otherwise the said bars are the same as bars 51, 51. The slot 59 for the bar 58 in the end 12*, of plate 12, is adjacent the line of the inner surface of the side plate or member 13, the slot 60, for the bar 58, is a slight distance inwardly from the anti friction guide roller 32, said plate 12 having square openings 61, for the projections or pins on the said bars 58, 58, and are similar to the openings 57, at the other end of said plate. In the upper, rounded ends of the bars 58, 58 are pivoted the ends of the roller 50, the inner surfaces of which bars are in line with the peripheral surface of the roller. lVith the lower end portions of the bars 58, 58 are pivotally connected at 58 the outer end portions of the hinge bars 62, the inner end portions of which bars extend inwardly, parallel with the inner surfaces of the side plates 13, 13 of the base plate 12, and are pivoted at 63 to said plates, at points a slight distance below the lower surface of said plate, the hinge bar 62, connected with the side plate 13, being bent at 62 (see Fig. 3), to extend laterally the distance therefrom to the said plate.
1n the employment of the device for the mitering of typehigh rules which inclose a frame of type, the position of the various parts are as seen in Fig. 1, the mitering gage plate 17 being adjusted in position at the proper angle upon the plate 12, by the releasing of the clamp 28. .l n this mitering operation the tvpehigh leveling rollers and bars are in the position seen in Fig. l, the bars 51, 51, and '58, 58', at the respective ends of the base block 16, are outwardly and horizontally extended in parallel lines with the inner surfaces of the side members 13, 3. of the base 10, both the gage plate 17 and the plate 18 being movable past the respective ends 12, 12*, of the base plate, in any required adjustment.-
The typehigh rules in the printing art are of defined lengths for type forms, and are gaged by the pica. measurement of one sixth of an inch, hence the gage plate 17 is divided by gage lines into rule lengths, and also with subdivided pica lines of division. As an illustration, 64, in Fig. 1, is a typehigh rule, and is placed in position against the outer surface of the gage plate 17, the forward end of the rule, if squared, extend ing to and a slight distance past the sharp endl'? of the converging plates 17 and 18. In this position of the typehigh rule 64, the adjustable gage or stop plate 21 is moved upon the turning of the set screw 24, to release the plate in the direction and in contact with the outer end of said typehigh rule, in which position of the plate 21, the surface toward said end of the typehigh rule is upon a pica line, upon the gage 17, when the set screw is again turned to hold the stop or adjustable plate 21 from movement. Should the rule require to be squared, it is placed against the plate 18. The typehigh rule and gage plate 17 are then grasped by the lefthand, and a long handle file 65, seen in dotted lines in Fig. 1, and in full lines in Fig. 2, is extended in a. position longitudinally with plate 12, past the outer surface of the guide roller 34, and bearing on the horizontal roller 46, thence past the inner surface of the guide roller 38, on the spring-controlled, movable bar 36, which moves outwardly against the tension of spring arms 11 and 12, thence past the outer surface of the guide roller 32, and bearing on the horizontal roller 47, in which move.- ment of the file the serrated surface of one rule.
of the flat sides of the file comes into contact with the forward end of the typehigh A reciprocating movement is then given the file, which now exerts an outward pressure on the roller 38, and the end in contact with the file is gradually cut away the width of the rule at one time, the file gradually moving inwardly, and the desired angle given the said end of the rule, the file in the meantime being held adjustably by the yielding guide roller 38. The files in common use are frequently made thicker at one end and thinner at the other, hence the cutting surface of the file is at all times held firmly against the guide rollers 32 and 3 1. The advantage of using the file in cutting the ends of rules, which are now made from type metal and brass, is that the corners are not broken or chipped by the tool, hence when a form is ready for-the press, the printing impression of the rule leaves no space at the mitcred ends, and a better re suit in printing obtained by the invention.
Even with the substitution of a hack saw for the file, which is commonly used in mitering lead rules, my invention controls the saw blade with more accuracy in the cutting movement and with less danger of chipping the metal at the lower portion of v the rule.
lVhile employing the file for cutting the typehigh rule and upon completion of the operation, and without removing the file from its position between the guide rollers, the clamp 28, upon the supporting plate 16, for the gage plate 17, is turned to release its hold upon the said plate, and the plate moved upon its pivot in the direction of the opening 26, at the endof slot 25, and when the head 27, on the screw bolt 26, comes into position opposite said opening, the plate 16 is raised from the surface of plate 12, removing the bolt head 27, which is of lesser size than said opening, through said opening, and the pivot 20 from its position in lug 14. Upon the removal. of plate 16 from the base plate, the typehigh roller 50 is seized by the hand and moved upwardly within the slots 59 and 60, in the end 12 of plate 12, raising the outer ends of the hinge bars 62. The bars 58, 58, when in a vertical position are pushed forcibly downward to force the projections 55, into the openings 61, in the top plate 12.: At the same time the outer end portions of the hinge bars 62, extending outwardly and downwardly, shortens the distance between the pivotal point 63, on the side plates 13, 13', and the pivotal points 58, on the lower ends of bars 58, 58, and gives rigidity thereto. In this position of the bars 58, 58 and guide roller 32, which forms a guiding abutment, the inner surfaces of said bars and guide roller are designed to be at right angles to the longitudinal outer surface of the side plate or member 13. A type cut, which is ordinarily a square piece of Wood upon which an electrotype is secured, is then placed in position upon the plate 12, against the inner surface of bar 58 and roller 50, as seen in dotted lines in Fig. 5, and the file operated to square the warped surface of the cut, the cut being turned so that the sides are squared, in order to fit the type when placed in the type forms.
When this operation is completed, the bars 51, 51 are raised within the slots 56, in the end 12, of plate 1, and secured thereto by the projections 55, the pivot 53 then being at the upper end of slot 52. The type out is then raised a slight distance above the surface of plate 12, and reversed in position with the electrot vpe toward said plate, between which and the plates 12 is placed a strip of paper. The file is then Withdrawn from the guide rollers and 3S, and placed horizontally upon the typehigh rollers if) and 50, and moved over the upward portion of the type out leveling the surface, so that when the cut is placed'in the type forms the impression from the electrotype will be uniform.
The device may, therefore, be used for mitering and squaring up the ends of the type rule, leveling the cuts, squaring the cuts and evening the edge of the electrotype, with rapidity and precision, and squaring the cuts without removing the miter gage fro-m plate 12.
Such modifications may be employed as are within the scope of the appended claims.
Having fully described my invention, what I now claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a. combined mitering and typehigh leveling machine, the combination with the base or bed plate, of tool supporting and guiding elements at each end of the bed plate, and lveling and guiding elements operating with and movable into position at right angles to and in alinement with one of said tool supporting and guiding elements.
2. In a. combined mitering and typehigh leveling machine, the combination with a base plate, and with tool supporting and guiding elements secured thereto in one longitudinal direction of the base plate, of typehigh abutments hinged to said base plate aiid movable in position at right angles to said tool guiding devices.
In a mitering mechanism, the combination with the bed plate, of a miter-form ing gage plate pivoted at one end to said bed plate, and adjustable devices for controlling the movement of said gage plate, and tool-supporting and guiding devices adjacent the pivotal point of connection of said gage plate with said bed plate.
4:. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate of the machine and the side members, of tool guiding devices secured to said bed plate and in alinement with the vertical longitudinal outer surfaces of one of said side members of said bed, and a gage plate pivotally connected with said bed plate between the separate tool guiding devices.
5. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate of the machine and one of the longitudinal vertical outer surfaces of said bed plate, of tool supporting devices secured to said outer surfaces, and tool supporting and guiding devices on said bed plate in vertical alinenient with said outer surfaces, and a gage plate pivotally connected with the bed plate, and means thereon for adjustably connecting the said gage plate with the bed plate.
6. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate, of a triangular supporting plate pivotally connected at its apex to said bed plate, a gage plate upon said triangular plate, and means for securing said plate adjustably and removably to said bed plate.
7. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate, of stationary upright tool holders on said plate, and a cutting tool supporting thereby, a movable tool holder yieldingly connected with the said bed plate and adapted to impart tension to the cutting tool while supported in position upon the upright tool holders.
8. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate, having a curved guide opening and with upright tool holders in vertical alinement with the longitudinal outer surface of said bed, of a triangular fiat mitering plate pivotally connected at its vertex to said bed plate intermediate said upright tool holders, a screw bolt within said curved opening and extending through said triangular plate, and clamping means on said bolt.
9. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate, of stationary upright anti-friction tool guiding devices at each end of said plate and in vertical alinement with the longitudinal outer surface of said bed plate, a cutting tool supported by said tool guiding devices, and a movable spring-controlled support or bar, and a tool guiding device thereon adapted to impart tension to the cutting tool while supported in position upon the upright tool guiding devices.
10. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate and the longitudinal side member having transverse openings therein, of a movable bar within said openings, a recoiling spring connected with said bar, and tool guiding devices on the bed plate and the outer end of said movable 11. In a mitering machine, the combination with the bed plate, and with tool guiding devices thereon in vertical alinement with one of the longitudinal vertical outer surfaces of said plate, and with a gage plate pivoted at one end to said bed plate between said tool guiding devices, of typehigh abutments pivotally connected with one end portion of said bed and movable into alinement at right angles to one of said tool guiding devices.
12. In a combined mitering and typehigh leveling machine, a base plate having side members and provided at its ends with longitudinal slots adjacent the inner surfaces of said side members, and bars pivotally connected at their inner ends to said side members and movable into an upright position within said slots, means for securing said bars to the bed plate, and typehigh anti-friction rollers pivoted to the upper end portion of said bars.
13. In a combined mitering and typehigh leveling machine, the combination with the bed plate, having longitudinal slots at the end portions of said plate, and vertical openings adjacent thereto, of bars movable into position within said slots, said bars having notches on their inner portions, and a projection 01' pin movable into a locked position within said vertical openings, a hinge plate pivotally connected with the lower end portions of said bars and the inner surfaces of the side members of said bed plates, said projections being adapted to enter the vertical slots in the base plate, and typehigh rollers pivotally connected at their end portions with the upper ends of said bars.
14. In a mitering machine, the combination with a bed plate, of upright anti-friction guide rollers, supported in position upon said bed in vertical alinement with one longitudinal outer surface thereof, a yielding support on said bed, and a guide roller connected therewith, a gage plate pivotally connected at one end with said bed plate between said upright guide rollers, and an adjustable stop on the gage plate.
15. In a mitering machine, the combination with a bed plate, of upright anti-friction guide rollers, and supporting bolts therefor on the bed plate and said rollers being in vertical alinement with the'vertical longitudinal outer surface of one side of said base plate, tool supporting rollers upon said side of the bed plate, a spring retracted bar extending beneath the bed plate, a guide roller upon its outer end, a cutting tool between said roller and said stationary rollers, means whereby the cutting tool may be operated, and a miter-forming gage plate pivotally connected with the bed plate in the path of the cutting tool.
