Description

SCM Mmm@ No.\l21,879i Patented nec.12,1s71.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN N. LEONARD, OF ROCKVILLE, CONNECTICUT.
IMPROVEMENT IN GUIDES FOR SILK WINDING.
Specication forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,b79 dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom 'it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN N. LEONARD, of Rockville, county of Tolland and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Guides for Silk Winding; and to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the saine, I will proceed to describe, referring to the drawing, in which the same letters indicate like parts in each of the figures.
The nature of this invention consists in arranging a grooved or guide-roller upon a vibratin g or traversing shaft, so that any number of guiderollers may be arranged upon one traversing spindle, and each one of said rollers may be quickly and easily adjusted to traverse the thread evenly upon the spool. The object 'of this invention is to secure free and easy action of the guideroller, to allow each roller to be easily, quickly, and perfectly adjusted to guide the silk ber evenly between the heads ot the spool.
A is the spool, upon which the silk is to be wound, arranged in a machine, and operated in the common way. B is a traverse-rod, upon which this improvement is arranged, in a proper relative position to the spool A. C is a threadguide roller, having a groove, D, smoothly finished, and is fitted closely and revolves freely upon the rod B. This roller C is adjusted and held in its relative position with the spool A by rollers E E, having a central orice to t the rod B,the inner ends of which are chambered to receive nearly one half of the length of the roller C and allow said roller to revolve freely therein. The
outer ends of these rollers E E are chambered to receive an elastic packing, F. The rollers E are made conical for a specific purpose, so that if a thread be broken and again mended, and the slack of the thread is clasped upon the conical surface it will immediately traverse into the groove D of the roller C. This packing is of such dimensions as to closely pack the space in the rollers and against the rod B, and allow the rollers E E to be moved back and forth to nicely adjust the guide-roller C to its proper position, and to allow it to revolve freely therein, so that no matter how many rollers are arranged upon the rod each one may be adjusted and readj usted at pleasure and thereby make a very great saving of silk in the process of winding.
I believe I have thus shown the nature, construction, and advantage of this invention, so as to enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same therefrom.
What I claim, and desire to secure by Lett-ers Patent, is-
l. The guide-roller C, held and adjusted in position upon the traverse-rod B by means of rollers E and packing F, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
2. The combination of the conical rollers E E with the roller C and rod B, substantially as and for the purpose set forth.
JOHN N. LEONARD.
