To all whom it may concem:
Be it known that we, GEORGE S. WETTRICH and EDwAnD E. AMMON, citizens of the United States of America, residing respectively, at Highland Park and Detroit, in the County ot' Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Spring-Retainers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
In the use of compression and retractile springs encircling or sleeved on valve rods, stems and plungers, we have found that coiled springs tend to eXert an unequal pressure around the valve rods, the pressure at one side of a valve rod being greater than at another side, consequently there is side thrust which tends to practically'loosen a valve rod in its guide and cause an uneven seating of a valve carried by the rod.
This, in the course of time, is very pronounced in connection with puppet valves of explosive engines, and in order to allow the coiled spring to adjust itself and eXert a uniform pressure around the valve rod, we have devised a novel spring retainer serving as a pressure equalizer and preventing any spring pressure or action other than in the direction of the longitudinal aXis of a valve rod.
The spring retainer is a simple, durable and ineXpensive pressed 'steel proposition that can be installed in the usual manner and as showing a preferred embodiment of our invention, reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein Figure 1 is a sectional view of a portion of an explosive engine having a puppet valve held in a closed position by a spring engaging a retainer in accordance with our invention Fig. 2 is a tainer;

The spring retainer comprses an 'inverted cup shaped Washer 1 having a central openplan of a detached spring reing 2 and an inwardly projecting flange 3 around said opening. At diametrcally opposed sides of the opening 2, the top of the Washer 1 is provided with depressons 4 y constituting rocker sockets to receive the Specificaton of Letters Patent.

The valve rod 6 is reciprocable in a guide 8 and the valve 7 is normally held in engagement with a valve seat 9 by the expansive force of the coiled spring 10 encircling the valve rod 6 beneath the Washer 1. The rocker sockets or depressions 4 are forned by cutting or stamping constituting rocker or fulcrum bosses for the uppermost convolution of the spring 10, and said bosses are disposed in a line at a right angle to the depressons 4, whereby the Washer will have a tilting action relative to the valve rod 6 at right angles to a tilting action of the upper end of the spring relative to the Washer 1. There is consequently a universal articulation of the spring relative to the valve rod and said spring can adjust itself and distrbute its expansive force so as wholly to afiect the valve rod 6 in the direction of its longitudnal axis. The guide 8 of the valve rod 6 is therefore not subjected to any side thrust by said rod and the valve 7 can evenly and uniformly engage the seat 9, prevent leakage through said valve seat, and other defects incident thereto.
What we claim is 1. As a new article of manufacture, a spring retainer having rocker sockets and fulcrum bosses with the rocker socket disposed in a plane at right angles to the plane of the fulcrum bosses. v
2. As a new article of manufacture, a spring retainer having diametrically opposed rocker sockets and diametrically opposed fulcrum bosses with the fulcrum bosses disposed in a plane at right angles to the plane of a rocker socket.
3. A spring retainer having a central opening, said Washer having one face there- 'washer l are provided with depressons ll of provided With rocke' sockets at opposed edges of the opening of said Washer, and fulcrun bosses projectng from the other face of said Washer at the outer edges thereof and dsposed n a plane at right angles to the plane of the rocker sockets of said Washer.
4:. A spring retaner comprsng a cup shaped Washer having a central opening, the outer face of said Washer having opposed rocker sockets theren, and fulcrum bosses in said Washer in opposed relation and in a plane at a right angle to the plane of the rocker soekets of said Washer.
