Serial No. 112,515. I
In addition to the parts just described, I provide two cutting points 17 and 18, each hound on its bottom by two facets 19 and 20. Zlhc meeting line for each pair of facets l9 and for each point 17 or 18 is indicated at- 21 and it. inclines upwardly slightly where intc rsccts the other line 2 and tho neotiug :mc 22 between the facets l-l and .l') at the point 237 This point, it will be observed, is eccentric to the point 12 and longitudinal axis of the drilling bit.
I wish to point out particularly that the point 12 extends materially below the horizontal plane of the points 17 and 18, whereby tho point 12 is given an effective load sci-ring to hold the tool for operation in a dcfinitu fixrd lino coinciding with the axis of this, tool. Tho inclined facet 13 adjacent the point 12 scrvcs' to cause the points .17 and 15% to be crowded laterally. with to sport to the center of the hole and cause an undercut ctl cct oi the tool, with, respect to the cutting points 1? and 18, The point 17 carried upon the lower and of a Web 17 whilc tho other point 18 is carried on a similar \Ytli 18'. Those webs extend practically throughout the whole lcugih of the body or rib 16 and illilhe a rigid and strong tool.
As notcd in Fig". l. each of the ribs. or wobs is rylimlrical in 0nd view. the axis of the curvature thereof being substantially coincident with the point; 93 where the line 92 intcrsccts the lines 21. The cdgos, there- 'form oi. the side points or cutting" portions of tho tool represented by the lines '24 and produce a shearing effect on the side p01 tions of the hoic formed through the rock. The cutting edge and point portions of the webs 17 and 18 project radially somewhat, beyond the main surfaces of these parts.
I claim: 1
'1. The herein described drilling bit comprising a main central rib having a leading point at its lower end in alincmcnt with the axis of the rib and drill. said point being fornual by the intersection of three triangular lilt'tlS. said drill also including two other web mciubors. cach baring a cutting point at its lower end projecting radially outother two cutting points outwardly with re- Hui, an.
