IMPROVEMENT IN FASTENING GARRIAGE-WHEELS.

Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,841, dated December 12, 1871.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that we, BERNHARD BERNDT and FRANZ BARSCH, of Williamsport, in the county of Lycomin g and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Fastening Carriage-Wheels; and do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyin g drawing making a part of this specification, in which-- Figure 1 is a plan view of the spindle-head; Fig. 2, a side view of the cap with the cover partly raised; Fig. 3, a plan view of the cap with the cover raised; Fig. 4, acentral vertical section on the line 00 a: of Fig. 2; Fig. 5, a plan view of the spindle-head with a vertical central section of the cap in position; and Fig. 6, a perspective of the spindle-head and cap in position with the cover raised.

Like letters of like kinds represent corresponding parts in each figure.

The nature of our invention relates to improvements in the class of attachments to the outer ends of carriage-axle spindles intended to secure the wheels from coming off when the carriage is in use; and the object sought is the construction of such an attachment as shall be cheap and simple, easily put on or taken oh, and certain and effective in operation; and our invention consists in a peculiar cap provided with a self-locking cover, and in the means employed to secure said cap in place upon the spindle-head so that it cannot be jarred or shaken off, all as more fully hereinafter described.

In the drawing, A represents the outer end or head of the spindle, provided with one or more cars or lugs, to, with rectangular faces; and B the body of the spindle, with or without a thimble, as may be desired. The cap is shown by C, and is constructed with an inner face, 0, so as to fit closely to the outer end of the hub, and has an inner cavity, d, through the bottom of which is an opening, 6, corresponding with the external form of the spindle-head A and its lug or lugs.

Within the cavity are one or more planes, f, to correspond with the lug or lugs before spoken of, and rising above them are one or more stops, 9, which prevent the turning of said lugs further than a certain point in one direction. A cover,

I), is suitably hinged upon the cap G, and is provided with one or more stops, 11, upon its inside, which, when the cover is shut down, engage with the side or sides of the lug or lugs opposite to that which pressesagainst the stop or stops g. A latchspring or other suitable spring, E, attached to the inside of the cap, as in Fig. 2, or upon the outside, or to the cover, as shown in Fig. 5, when it may be released by a proper pin, 2', or, as shown in 0, serves to hold the cover down in place and completes the enumeration of separate parts.

The cap and its cover may be cast in separate parts, of suitable metal, and the cover may be se cured by a screw, j, instead of the spring.

in operation the cap is placed over the spindle-head and turned around until one side of the lug or lugs presses againstthe stop orstops g, the cover shut down, with its stop or stops engaging on the opposite side or sides of said lugs, where by the cap is securely locked upon the end of the spindle, where it cannot be detached except by hand, and, in addition, the dust or mud is exeluded from the boxes and a neat finish is given to the hub.

The advantages of this simple device are too apparent to need particular mention.

Having thus described our invention, whatwe claim therein as new is 1. In combination with the spindle-head A provided with a lug or lugs, u, the cap 0 provided with the plane or planes f and stop or stops g, substantially as set forth.

2. The cap 0 provided with the hinged cover I), substantially as set forth.

3. The cover D provided with the stop or stops it, in combination with the lugs a of the spindlehead, substantially as set forth.

4. The combination of the cap 0, cover D, and spring E, substantially as described and shown, for the purposes set forth.
