VALVE FOR AIR-BRAKE SYSTEMS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ENOCII PEYTON BLACKLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hamlet in the county of Richmond and State of lq'orth Carolina, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Valves for Air-Brake Systems, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to angle cocks for air brake systems.
The object of my invention is to provide an angle cock of the type described, with means for disposing of the dust and sediment carried by the air in the flexible train pipe sections of an air brake system, when the angle cock is operated to relieve the air from the flexible sections, whereby the said dust and sediment-carried by the air will not fly into the operators face.
With the above and other objects in view, the present invention consists in the combination and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and particularly pointed out in the appended claims, it being understood that changes may be made in the form, size, proportion and minor details without departing from the spirit or sacrificing any of the advantages of the invention.
In the drawings Figure 1 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the invention.

Fig. 3 is a vertical transverse sectional view.
In the drawings, 1 represents the casting of the angle cock, having the usual bore 2 therethrough, and 3 is the conical plug or valve held in place in the casting by means of the spring 4, which in turn, is held under tension by means of the, cap 5 screwed into the lower end of the casting. The valve may be operated by means of a wrench applied to the usual rectangular head 6 formed integral with the plug or valve 3.
Extending through the side of the castin and'at right angles to the bore 2 is a port communicating with the atmosphere.
The valve or plug 3 is provided with a bore 8 extending through the same and terminating in an upper chamber 9 and a lower chamber 10. Extending through the valve or plug above the port 8 and at right angles to the same, is a port 11 opening into. the

upper chamber 9, The lower chamber 10 is designed as a dust receiver for a purpose to be presently explained.
My invention operates as follows: When the plug or valve is in open position the bore 8 of the plug and the bore 2 of the casting are in registration and the air in the system is free to pass through the said plug. In this position of the plug or valve, the ports 7 and 11 are entirely out of use, but when the plug or valve is turned to closed position and communication cut ofl through the bores 2 and 8, the port 11 comes into registration with the bore 2 of the casting and the bore 8 of the valve or lug comes into registration with the port 7, whereby communication is established between the atmosphere and the space back of the plug or valve 3, thereby relieving the pressure in the flexible train pipe sections and permitting the ready uncouplingof the same. What Iclaim is 1. In an angle cock for air brake systems,
' a casting having a central bore therethrough and a port extending through the casting at right angles to the said bore and communieating with the atmosphere, a plug in said casting having a main bore therethrough and a port extending through said plug at right angles to the main bore and located at the top of the plu whereby when the plug is closed to cut 0 communication through its main bore, the said main bore will register with the port in the casting and the port in the valve will register with the upper part of the bore of the casting, whereby air will be relieved from behind the said plug, but
dust carried by said airwill be dropped to the bottom of the bore of the plug and not escape to the atmosphere.
2. In an angle cock for air brake systems, a casting having a central bore therethrough and aport extending through the casting at right angles to the said here and emnmunicating with the atmosphere, a plug in said casting having a main bore extending therethrough, said bore terminating in an upper and lower chamber, the said plug having a port extending therethrough at right anglesto the bore, and located at the top of the plug and communicatin with the upper chamber, whereby when t e plug is closed to cut off communication through its main bore the said main bore will register with the port in the casting and the port in the plug will register with the upper part of the bore of from behind the said ENOCH P. BLACKLEY.
