SHUTTLE FOR SEWING-MACHINES.
Application filed December 13, 1915.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, PETER SJosTRoM, a subject of the King of Sweden, and a resident of Maplewood, in the county of Middlesex and State of Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Shuttles for Sewing-Machines, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to shuttlesfor machines for sewing heavy material such as leather, and particularly to that type of such machines known as welt sewing machines.
One object of the invention is the provision of means whereby the thread may be drawn fro-m the periphery of the bobbin.
33 on Fig. 1 and drawn to an enlarged scale.
Similar characters designate like parts throughout the several figures of the draw- 1ngs.
In the drawings, 10 is a shuttle case provided with the usual hook 11 having a peripheral depression 12 in advance thereof. The case 10 is provided with a bobbin recess 13 extending inwardly from one face thereof, said recess being eccentrically disposed relatively to the axis of rotation of the shuttle.
Centrally positioned in the recess 13 is a support 14 extending into the central bore 15 of the bobbin 16 carrying the coil of thread 17. The support 14 is diametrically opposed to the point of the hook 11. The inner flange 18 of the bobbin 16 flares inwardly as shown in Fig. 3, thereby forming an annular space 19 between said flange and the bottom of said recess, from which there. is an outlet for the thread through the opening 20 in the center of the case 10.
The case 10 is also provided with two Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Man 6, 1917.
Serial No. 67,059.
holes 21 and 22 extending from the recess 13 to the depression 12, the outer ends of these holes being connected by a groove 23 in which the thread 17 is adapted to extend as it passes from the hole 21 to the hole 22, thus avoiding any interference with the usual shuttle-rotating-lug positioned in said recess.
The hole 21 communicates with the recess 13 at a point between the flanges of the bobbin 16 and the hole 22 is opposite the space 19.
The thread 17 passes'outwardly through the hole 21 along the groove 23 to the hole 22 through which it passes to the space 19 and then through the central outlet 20 in the center of the case 10.
The bobbin support 14 has a diametral slot 24 in its outer end in which is pivoted at 25 a locking member 26 provided with an inwardly projecting cam portion 27 at one side of the pivot 25 and a projecting finger 28 at the other side of said pivot.
The finger 28 bears on the outer face of the bobbin and normally retains it on its support 14. This support 14 is provided with a cylindrical chamber having a disk 29 at its inner end and at its outer end a movable plunger 30 forced outwardly against the cam portion 27 by a spring 31 interposed between said plunger and disk.
The outward pressure of the spring 31 forces the finger 28 into such frictional contact with the face of the bobbin as to prevent'any rapid rotation of the said bobbin. In other words the bobbin is restrained from rotation except as the thread 17 is pulled from the coil.
The pressure of the spring may be regulated by the member 32 threaded in the base of the support 14. By providing the delivery of the thread from the coil of thread drawn into the groove 23. When once drawn into the groove 23 it will be retained in this groove by the friction finger 28 which will permit the bobbin 16 to rotate only as fast as the thread is tautly drawn therefrom.
When it is desired to-remove the bobbin 16 the finger 28 may be moved in the direction of the arrow a until it is parallel with the axis of the support 14.
It will be observed that only the hub of the bobbin 16 bears against the bottom of the recess 13, and therefore the friction between the bobbin 16 and case 10 is reduced to a minimum.
It is believed that the operation and many advantages of this invention will be fully understood from the foregoing description.
Having thus described my invention, 1 claim:
1. In a device of the class described, the combination of a shuttle case provided with a loop engaging hook and having a peripheral depression adapted to receive a projection from a shuttle carrier, an eccentrically disposed bobbin recess in one face, two radial thread passages between said recess and depression, and a central discharge passage from the bottom of said recess; and y a thread carrying bobbin having its hub extending beyond the inner flange thereof and adapted to contact with the bottom wall of said recess.
2. In a device of the class described, the
combination of a shuttle case provided with a loop engaging hook and having an eccentrically disposed bobbin recess in one face thereof, a peripheral depression adapted to receive a projection from a shuttle carrier, and a centrally disposed thread discharge outlet extending through said case from the bottom of said recess; a bobbin support centrally disposed in said recess and cal wall of the shuttle case to said peripheral depression and then returned through said case to the bobbin recess at a point between the bottom of said recess and the inner flange of the bobbin and finally delivered from said recess through the discharge outlet.
Signed by me at Boston, Mass, this 1+Lth day of October, 1915.
