PORTABLE LIGHT. APPLICATION FILED MAY 29, I916.

EDMUND H. BECKER, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA.
PORTABLE LIGHT.
' Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 6,1917.
Application filed May 29, 1916. Serial No. 100,635.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDMUND H. BECKER, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashington, in the District of Columbia, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Portable Lights, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a self contained portable electric light.
One of the objects of this invention is to devise a light which is not only portable but is conveniently handled both in the open and in a small space where little room is available for handling the light.
A further object is the provision of a lighting device havlng a handle member employing the lamp as a portion of the member to be'grasped in carrying the device.
Further objects and advantages of this invention will be set forth in the detailed de scription which is to follow.
Figure 1 is a fragmental view of a battery box with my invention attached thereto,
Fig. 2, is a rear view with the hand lamp removed from the support,
Fig. 3, is a detailed perspective of the combined handle and lamp support and Fig. 4,-is a modified form of attaching means.
Referring to the drawings in detail, like numerals refer to like parts in the several figures.
The numeral 5 represents a battery box which maybe either a storage battery, a dry battery or a case containing a battery. 6 represents upstanding ears which are rigidly attached to the battery box 5. Pivoted in these ears is a handle member 7 having inwardly turned ends 8 and 9 for engagement within right-angular slots 4 in the ears 6. This handle 7 is preferably formed of an arc. throughout its longitudinal length as shown in the perspective at 10 forming a grip portion for convenience in grasping with the hand. Rigidly attached to the handle 7 are spring clips 11 and 12. A hand lamp 13 having a circular cross section is adapted to rest upon the handle 7 and be retained thereon by the spring clips 11 and 12. One end of the handle 7 may be bent as at 14 i to allow clearance for the enlarged portion 15 of the hand lamp 13. The enlarged portion 15 carries the lens 16 and lamp, not shown.
, to the handle 17. This means consists of a pin having a head 20 which is adapted to enter a recess 21 in the hand lamp and be retained'therein by sliding the same laterally into the opening 22. It is to be under stood that two of these will be used-instead of the two clips.
In operation the hand lamp 13 completes the handle portion 10 making a good round member to grasp, making the whole device convenient to carry. When it is necessary to project the light into a small space the hand lamp can then conveniently be de-' tached and used as a trouble light.
Having described my invention what I claim is A device of the class described comprising a case, opposite upright ears upon the said casehaving right-angular slots therein, a bail-like handle provided with inturned free ends shiftably arranged within the said slots provided with a grip portion arcuate in cross-section, arcuate spring clips transversely secured upon the said grip portion,
and a cylindrical electric lamp having electrical connections with the said case removablv arranged within the said clips longitudinally of the grip portion of the handle, the said grip portion and lamp being adapted for grasping during the carrying of the case.
In testimony whereof I affix mysignature in the presence of two witnesses.
' EDMUND H. BECKER.
