IMPROVEMENT IN PACKINGS OR BEARINGS FOR JOURNALS, &c.
Specification forming part of Letters Patent No. 121,806, dated December 12, 1871.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ELIZA D. MURFEY, of New York, county of New York, State of New York, have invented an Improved Packing or Bearing for Journals, &c., of which the following is a specification:
My invention consists of wires or thin metal strips, coated with impregnated paper or fiber, and formed, as fully described hereafter, into sheets, tubes, or ropes, which may be substituted for materials heretofore used for packings or bearings.
The wire may be covered with cotton or other material in the same manner as what is known as bonnetwire. The cheapest and best covering, however, is paper, which may be applied and secured to the wire in any suitable manner. The covering is impregnated with a composition of paraffine and plumbago, or with any other suitable composition, either before or after it is applied to the wire; and the covered wire, either before or after the impregnating material is ap plied, may be woven alone or with fibrous strands so as to form a sheet or cloth, which may be cut into strips or sections and made into rings or tubes for hollow packings or for bearings for journals, &c.; or the wire may be wound, braided, or otherwise applied round a body of fibrous strands to form a covering or casing for the latter, forming a rope packing, which is an efficient, strong, and durable substitute for the ordinary packings.
I claim A packing or bearing consisting of wire or thin metal strips covered with impregnated paper or equivalent material, and formed into sheets, rings, or ropes, either with or without other materials, as specified.
