Application filed September 14, 19 14. Serial IfTo. 861,721.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that we, W LLIA MACK, MARTIN A. OTooLE, and Join; F. QToonn, citizens of the United States, residing at Scranton, in the county of Lackaw'anna, State'of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Pump, of which the following is a specification. i
The device forming the subject matter of this application is a pump and one object of the present invention is to provide novel mechanism whereby the pistons which reciprocate in the pump cylinders are operatively connected with a prime mover, such as a water wheel.
It is within the scope of the invention to improve generally and to enhance the utility of devices of that type to which the pre sent invention appertains.
Vith the foregoing and other objects in view which-will appear as the description proceeds, the invention resides in the combination and arrangement of parts and in the .details of construction hereinafter described and claimed, it being understood that changes in the precise embodiment of the invention herein disclosed can be made within the scope of what is claimed, without departing from the spirit of the inven-' tion.
In the accompanying drawings Figure 1 shows the invention in side elevation, parts being broken away;
Fig. 2 is a topplan;
Fig. 3 is an elevation delineating the opposite side of the structure from that shown in Fig. 1, one of the pump cylinders being in section; and
Fig. 4 is a fragmental sectional detail showing a portion of the nozzle construction.
In carrying out the invention, there is provided a supporting base 1 holding a casing 2, the casing 2 having a reduced neck 9, connected with the base 1 and constituting an outlet for the tail water. Projecting from the casing 2 is a platform 3.
Journaled for rotation in the casing 2 is a shaft 4 to which is secured a wheel 5 located within the casing 2 and including buckets 6. WVater is delivered against the buckets 6 by nozzles 7 opening into conduits 8 in the casing, the nozzles and conduits being positioned upon the casing as may be found expedient or desirable.
Located upon the outside of the casing 2 and secured to the drive shaft fl is a main see- 41 6 .10 m n'si n e a PiP Q 11 acnaled for rotation on'a stub sh aft 12 carried by and projecting from 'casing'2. The
pinion 11 meshes into a large, auxiliary gear ried by the as 2- 1 The e arv'sea Wh e ll. s suppl ed with a wrist pi'n'lfi connected toa link 26, one end of which ispivoted to arockarm the upper end of which issecuredto a rock f l i d S'PQ d ransv sel or t e l n 9 nd io i n led' in sea d ai nss 9 a the top of the Securedintermediate its ends to the shaft*18 is a walking beam 20 to t e ds f w ich r p YQted dependin piston rods 21, the lower ends of which are mounted to rock on hearing pins 28 located in recesses 27 formed in the upper ends of piston heads 22 mounted to reciprocate in cylinders 23 upheld by the platform 3. Each pump cylinder 23 is provided with an intake valve 24 and with an outlet valve 25. These valves may be of any desired construction adapted to effect the ends in view. The cylinders 23 preferably constitute parts of air pumps, although obviously, some fluid other than air may be pumped if desired.
In practical operation, the water wheel 5 is rotated by the impact of liquid delivered wheelie journaledf on a stub caragalnst the buckets 6 through the nozzles 7 and the conduits 8. When the water wheel tion being transmitted to the auxiliary gear 5 is rotated, the shaft 4 will be rotated, mo- 7 wheel 14 through a geartrain comprising the main gear wheel 10 and the pinion 1l.' From theauxiliary gear wheel 1%, motion will be transmitted to the rock shaft'flS through the medium of the link 26 and the rock arm 17 on the shaft 18. When the shaft 18 is oscillated upon its axis, the walking beam 20 will be tilted, motion being imparted to the piston heads 22 by means of the piston rods 21. The construction is such" that while air is being sucked into one of the pump cylinders 23, air will be forced out of ing alternatingly, to effect, respectively, the suction and discharge strokes. In this connection it is to be recalled, again,'that the device in use is not confined to an air pump, but may be used to pump any fluid other than air. r
The structure herein disclosed is simple the other pump cylinder, the heads 22 operatin form and compact. It comprises a minimum number of parts and will be found thoroughly efficient under circumstances in which a compact pumping engine is demanded.
Having thus described the invention, what is claimed is In a device of the class described, a casing provided with a depending neck constituting a support for the casing and an outlet for the casing; a substantially horizontal platform secured to one side of the casing above the bottom of the casing; cylinders supported on the platform; check valves carried by the platform and coacting with the cylinders, the check valves being located below the platform, whereby the platform will constitute a protection for the check valves; pistons working in the cylinders; a walking beam; connections uniting the ends of the walking beam with the pistons, the walking beam and the connections lying immediately above the platform, whereby the platform will constitute a protection for the connections and the walking beam; a rock shaft Copies of this patent may be obtained for journaled in the casing, the Walking beam being secured to one end of the rock shaft; a crank arm depending from the rock shaft and located upon the opposite side of the *asing from the platform; a main shaft journaled in the casing; an impact wheel on the main shaft and located within the casing; a gear train located. on the same side of the casing with the crank arm and lying substantially within the perimeter of the casing, the gear train including a wheel fixed to the main shaft and an auxiliary wheel journaled on the casing; and a link connecting the arm with the auxiliary wheel, the arm and the link moving within the perimeter of the casing.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our own we haverhereto affixed our signatures in the presence of two witnesses.
