Specification of Letters Eatent. i Patented Feb, 2'2, 1?}12,
Application filed Becemher 25, 15312. Serial No. 738,515.
To all whom it may concern: v
Be it-known that I, ()soAu bl. i ouians'r, a citizen ofthe United States, resicung'at Schenectady, county of Schenectady, State.
especially to means for removing the fuse,
which is readily attached to and detached from the same. Nith fuses, such us are hommonly used in station wiring, pole work and in subway work, it is frequently desirable to remove the fuse without switching oil the current, and, when the some is used. on high tension circuits, direct contact with the shell of the fuse is liable to result in a shock to the operator. My invention provides a cheap and eifective insulated handgrip, which is readily secured to the fuse and is easily detached therefrom, whereby the fuse may he removed from the base without dangerto the operator.
My invention is illustrated in the ecconipenying drawings, in which Figure 1 is a vertical sectional View of the fuse box, with the fuse zindthe attached handle in elevit tion, and Fig. 2 is an end elevation of inclosed fuse and the handle therefor:
Referring to'the drawings, 1 represents the box within which the fuse is mounted, provided with a coveix 2 and with suitable openings 3 for the cables. A base i of suitable insulatingnieteriel, such as wood, is secured to the bottom of the box 1, and cont-net terminals 5 are mounted on either end of the base. The wood is preferably treated its with porufiin to improve its insulating value. An inclosed fuse comprising an elongated shell 6, the ends of which are closed by cups 7 is provided with flattened projecting terminals 9, which are adapted to engage the stationary terminals The cups 7 are provided with the usual venti lilting openings 8, at least one of which 'is located in 'elineinent with the flattened terminal 9. The handle for the fuse which embodies my invention comprises an insulated hand-grip 10, to the ends which are secured similar brackets 11 by screws 12. The lower ends of the hru'ckets ere slotted at ELY and are adapted to slip over the terminals 9. The brackets 11 21 336 31 provided with inwardly extending lugs i i which may conveniently be punched "from the metallic bracket and each of whiclris adapted to engage one of the openings 8 in slinement with the terminal 9,10 l openings the lugs are guided. by the slc endsof the brackets passing over the terminals, The-brackets 11 are made suiiiciently flexible sothat when the handle is placed in position the lugs H readily ride over the edge of the cups 7 and snap into-the openings 8. This urrungementgives a positive action and it is quite diilicult to disengage the lugs after they once snap into the openings in order to disengage the handle, it is only necessary to pry one of the brackets 11 outward slightly when its lug will. he disengaged from the corresponding openin i will be seen that the device embodying my invention is extremely cheap, as it comprises only an insulated bar, which may conveniently be made of hard wood, preferably treated in the manner above indicated, and two brackets which may he made of steel punchings, and that the some affords a ready means for removing the fuse from the fuse box.
in cccorduncewith the provisions of the potent statutes, 1 have described the principles of operation of my invention, together with the apparatus whichl now consider to represent the best embodiment thereof; but desire to have it understood thstthe up )erotus shown is only illustrative, and that he invention can he carried out by other means il 'het I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent oi? the United States, i
l. A fuse remover comprising a handle of insulstiu muterinl, and two brackets of tending transversely therefrom, the ends of said bl'HCiKQtS being slotted and having inturned toward one another and adapted to detschuhly engage the ends or a fuse.
A fuse remover comprising an insulut mg handle and brackets with lugs at their adjacent sides extending transversely from said handle, said brackets being resiliently flexible towzml and away from one another, so that when the remover is applied to u fuse they will separate and allow the lugs to ride over the ends of the fuse and then return 3, A fuse remover comprising an insulat ling handle and hru kcts extending trans versely therefrom end having on their adminals and to releasably secure the-handle to the fuse.
5. In combination, a fuse base, stationary contact terminals mounted thereon, an inclosed fuse comprising a shell, perforated caps covering the ends of said shell and terminals projecting from said caps which are adapted to engage said stationary contact terminals, and a handle for removing said fuse comprising an insulated hand-grip,
brackets secured thereto which are adapted to straddle said projecting terminals, and means associated ith said brackets and cooperating With said ventilated openings for removably securing the handle to said fuse 6. In combination, afuse base, stationary integral contacts mounted thereon an inclosed fuse comprising an elongated shell for the fuse having caps provided with ventilating openings for closing the ends of said envelop, and blade terminals on said caps adapted to engage said stationary contacts, and a handle for removing said fuse comprising an insulated hand-grip, spring brackets secured thereto and adapted to be received over said projecting blade terminals, and lugs se-. cured to said brackets and adapted to detachably secure said handle to said fuse.
7. at incloscd fuse'having caps provided with ventilating openings and contact terminals projecting from the ends of said fuse,
a handle comprising an insulated hand-grip, 5
brackets projecting therefrom which are adapted to straddle said terminals, a lug projecting from each of said brackets and adapted to engage one of the ventilating. openings in said caps whereby the handle. is adaptedto be detachably secured to said fuse.
In witness whereof, I have hereunto set my hand this 24th day of December, 1912.
